He also netted 13 times for England in 35 games as he made appearances during the 1980 Euros and 1982 World Cup.
His devastated family confirmed he passed away yesterday following a “brief” battle with brain cancer.
A statement said: “Paul lived a full life and was fortunate enough to represent a group of fantastic football clubs as well as his country, all of which meant the world to him.
“Anyone who knew Paul will attest to his fantastic sense of humour, his passion for life and his work.
“He will be sorely missed by everyone who was ever around him and by those most close to him.”
The family also thanked the NHS for their “unbelievable care” and those who visited Mariner during his battle.
The Three Lions led tributes to Mariner after the sad news was confirmed.
They said: “We’re sad to have learned that Paul Mariner, who made 35 appearances for the #ThreeLions, has passed away at the age of 68.
“Mariner represented England between 1977 and 1985, scoring 13 goals.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends and former clubs.”
    ‘DEVASTATED’
Ipswich Town FC also paid tribute to their former striker, saying: “We are devastated to hear the news of the passing of Town legend Paul Mariner at the age of 68.
“The thoughts of everyone at #itfc are with Paul’s family and friends at this sad time.
    “Thank you, Paul.”
Mariner’s former Ipswich teammate Alan Brazil revealed in November how the prolific goalscorer had undergone major surgery.
It is understood he had a brain tumour removed.
The star tweeted his gratitude to well-wishers at the time, saying: “Thank you, I’m fighting and have incredible people looking after me.”
Bolton-born Mariner began his career aged 19 when he signed for Chorley in 1973.
He then moved to Plymouth Argyle where he scored 61 goals in 155 appearances.
Mariner’s partnership with teammate Billy Rafferty was instrumental to the Pilgrims’ Division Three promotion campaign in 1974/75.
In 1976, he was sold to Ipswich where he made 339 appearances for the club under Bobby Robson’s management and scored 135 goals.

Mariner also spent two years with Arsenal and Portsmouth before moving abroad to play for teams in Australia, the US and Malta.
He returned to Plymouth as head coach and then manager but couldn’t save the team from relegation in 2010.
The former player then turned his hand to MLS teams and was head coach for Toronto FC for six months before becoming a commentator.

Firm boasts of giving staff Monday after Euro 2020 final off – before workers emailed to tell them they won’t get it

A COMPANY boasted that it would give its staff a day off after the Euro 2020 final – before workers were emailed and told they wouldn’t be getting it. LookFantastic, which sells beauty, skincare, and haircare products, promised to give its employees a day off after England’s game if their social media post reached a certain number of likes.
The beauty website promised to give its employees a day off if their social media post reached a certain number of likes
Many people called out the brand
The company, owned by The Hut Group, said that the “fate of Team Fantastic is in your hands” as the amount of “likes” would determine what time work begins on Monday morning.
And if the post gained 7,000 likes, the firm said that the employees would be given a whole day off after the Euro 2020 final.
The Instagram post read: “IT’S COMING HOME. In honour of that, we’ve decided to give you the power on what time our teams start work on Monday…
“You need to act quick though – we’ll take the count at 5pm!”
But in an internal email seen by The Sun Online, employees were told that the “stunt” was just a “great engagement opportunity.”
Workers were told that the social media target and the promise of a day off after England’s final was “not official comms.”
Despite the post on Instagram reaching over 30,000 likes – surpassing the top target – workers were told that they were “lucky to have been given the 12pm start.”
The company was not able to specify who sent out the email – but insisted that employees would still be able to take Monday off.
Social media users were quick to call out the brand
LookFantastic posted the deal on their social media pages
In an internal email, staff were told the orders were not ‘official’
Reacting to the posts, one former employee said: “It’s just embarrassing really, it’s also just poor form to put something out there like that.
“Your staff are being treated one way, but then internally you’re sending an email to say the complete opposite.
“I think everyone is disgusted really. That’s what they think is okay to put out there, then they’re going to go back on internally, just for promotion of the brand.
“It’s a continuous vicious circle, and it’s things like this that echo that.”
And multiple people took to social media, claiming that the post was a “publicity stunt.”
One person wrote on Twitter: “Imagine having a culture so poor that you tweet this and then email your internal staff not to get their hopes up because it’s just a publicity stunt.”
And another user said: “You’re not even giving your staff the day off and have said it’s just a gimmick!”
A third wrote on Instagram: “This is fake, hard working employees have just got an email saying that this isn’t ‘official.’
    FOUL PLAY
“How unfair and two-faced. All for a few likes!”
Another person wrote in the comments: “Terrible to post this and then email them to say it’s not happening.”
It’s believed that following external pressure, staff were called into an emergency meeting where previous guidance was overruled and they were told they would in fact be getting Monday off.
The LookFantastic account then confirmed that “we’re giving all teams Monday off.”
The firm told The Sun Online that the initial email, telling employees that the social media post wasn’t “official,” was not sent by senior management.
A spokesperson from The Hut Group said: “We are incredibly proud of what this England team has achieved and, in so doing, they have already made history.
“We will be cheering them all the way in the final and we are delighted that all of THG’s employees will be able to enjoy watching the game in full knowledge that they can either enjoy the day off on Monday or take a day off in lieu, recognising our national team’s success.”

Sunday night’s historic final will see England battle Italy for the Euro title – with many workers expected to be worse for wear the next morning if the Three Lions bring home a victory.
Southgate’s lads bagged a place in the final after smashing Denmark 2-1 on Wednesday night.
It is the first final England has reached in 55 years.
The nail-biting final will be played at Wembley – with thousands of fans expected to flood the capital’s streets ahead of the title-race game.

The heavyweight champ, beaten by Lennox Lewis in 2003, wore his country’s yellow and blue team kit as he said: “Today all Ukrainians, even those who are not very keen on football, are closely following the contest against Gareth Southgate and his men.
“But in all honesty, the game will be the toughest and most challenging for our national team.
“England is one of the best team’s both in Europe and the world.”

Former British Army hero Gavin Kuhl, 43, reckons Harry Kane and co will run away 2-0 victors in the anticipated Rome clash.
And he travelled 1,429 miles to be there – just so he could experience the buzz of the big game.
Gav, originally from Cornwall but living in Oslo, Norway, for the last ten years, said: “We’re not allowed to watch the game in Italy so this is the next best thing.
“I thought, ‘why not?’ The beer here is good and the Ukrainian women are beautiful.”
Gav, who served in the Princess of Wales regiment, roared: “All the Ukrainians are saying England have a better squad but they are fiercer and a more dedicated team.
“I think they’re in for a big surprise!”

Ukraine is also home to the world’s strongest man Oleksii Novikov.
He showed his power by pressing our flag-flying reporter over his head.
The roaring Ukranian beast is backing Andriy Shevchenko’s men to show their own might in Rome tomorrow night.
But Sun man Ben Leo bid for his own victory over Ukraine by tackling 21-stone Novikov in a brute test of power.
The pair went head-to-head in an arm wrestle at Novikov’s home in Kiev, with Leo weighing a trim 172lbs compared to his rival’s 300lbs.

And in what is hoped will be the only Ukranian victory over England in the next 24 hours, Novikov proved he was the real deal with an extremely close-fought win.
Elsewhere, locals in Kiev today admitted Ukraine must channel the spirit of footie legend Valeriy Lobanovskyi if they have a chance of taming the Three Lions.

Motorists honked their horns and gave the thumbs-up in excitement for today’s big game reached fever-pitch.
It came as Ukranian pubs and restaurants announced they were offering free booze to their 40million countrymen every time England concede tomorrow.

But locals in Kiev last night feared: “I think we will end up very parched!”
Taxi driver Alexi Dravachenko told The Sun: “When Russia were playing their first match against Belgium, lots of restaurants and bars here offered free drinks for every goal they conceded.“We are doing the same against England but I have a feeling everyone is going to be left very thirsty.”

Euro 2020 – Brit soldiers jump up and down as they watch England beat Germany 2-0 from Somalia posting

BRITISH soldiers jumped up and down as they watched England beat Germany 2-0 from their Somalia posting. The squaddies couldn’t contain their excitement when England scored the winning goal against their historic rivals in this evening’s Euro 2020 game.

British soldiers cheered as England beat Germany in the nail-biting game at Wembley
The Ministry of Defence shared the jubilant snap on Twitter paired with the caption: “It’s coming home! England fans in the Armed Forces will be tuning in from around the world to support their team today.
“This photo shows Army personnel deployed to protect peace and security in Somalia celebrating an England goal earlier in the Euros.”
Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were tonight’s heroes as they sank the Germans with late goals and blew open England’s route to the final of the Euros.
Tonight’s win was England’s first against Germany in a major tournament since 1966 – leaves the Three Lions with a clear path to the final with either the Czech Republic or Denmark waiting in the semis.
Southgate showed extreme caution with his starting line-up and England defended in numbers but nobody here cared as 40,000 roared every block and tackle as if they were goals.
Sterling started and ended the 75th-minute attack which sent England on course for a quarter-final with Sweden or Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night, bursting forward from midfield and then nudged home a cross from Shaw.

Topless fans cheered on the team after beating Germany
Prince William fist pumps the air alongside Prince George and Kate Middleton
And after Shaw ran at the German defence, Grealish centred for Kane to score with a stooping header.
There were famous faces spotted at today’s game, including Prince George with his football-crazy dad, Prince William.
Kate Middleton, who had not seen England play live before, showed her support in a red jacket over a white shirt.
Prince William, who is also President of The Football Association, was seen pumping his fists at Wembley Stadium for England’s fourth match of the Euros.
And while there was no England shirt for seven-year-old Prince George – who instead wore a smart navy blue jacket, shirt and official FA tie – the future king clapped his hands as England thumped to victory.
Mum Kate Middleton also got into the action, donning a bright red jacket from Zara over a white top.
The royals were joined by David Beckham and his son Romeo, along with Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry.
And George – who looked nervous as he sat between his parents for the national anthem – quickly got into the spirit of the game.
Fans turned the sky red and white by letting off flares as they arrived at Wembley draped in England flags.
Over 5 million pints will be drunk by footy fans during the match tonight.
There were scenes of chaos outside the stadium before kickoff as boozed-up fans climbed trees and stripped off while swigging beer.
Roaring choruses of It’s Coming Home were heard in London as excited fans chucked drinks in the air.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) believe England fans will neck 5million pints during the mighty clash.
The Three Lions lifted the Jules Rimet trophy thanks to goals from legends Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.
But what followed is 55 years of hurt for England while Germany enjoyed world dominance at major tournaments.

The rivalry has been bolstered by heartbreaking penalty shootouts and controversial disallowed goals.
In the 1970 World Cup, it was West Germany that put an end to England’s campaign in extra time.
Gazza’s tears were then shared by the whole country after England crashed out of the 1990 World Cup semi-final on penalties.

Marcus Rashford had never peeled a carrot… and now he’s on a mission to get every kid cooking, says chef Tom Kerridge

TOP chef Tom Kerridge learned to cook aged 11, making meals for his younger brother while his single mum worked two jobs to ensure her boys had enough to eat.It was a childhood that echoed that of footballer and child poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford, whose mum Melanie worked gruelling minimum-wage shifts to feed her five kids.
England ace Marcus Rashford has admitted he has never peeled a carrot, but now he has plans to teach all kids to cook meals that cost pennies
Now the two men have come together to teach the country’s poorest children how to cook simple yet healthy meals, with ingredients that cost pennies.
The idea was born when 23-year-old Manchester United and England striker Marcus revealed he had never learned to cook — and had no idea where to start in the kitchen.
Michelin-star chef Tom, 47, dad to five-year-old son Acer, told The Sun: “Marcus freely admitted, ‘I don’t know how to cook and I want to be able to do it’.
“That’s what makes him such an incredible young man, he’s not embarrassed about having a go and he’s not embarrassed to say he doesn’t know something.
TOP chef Tom Kerridge will be teaching Marcus how to get going in the kitchen — with families across the country following along too
“He’s somebody that wants to learn and he pays attention.”
Tom will be teaching Marcus how to get going in the kitchen — with families across the country following along too — in their new campaign Full Time Meals: Get Cooking With Marcus And Tom.
As part of the initiative they will release weekly recipe tutorials on Instagram, starting with a simple chicken satay dish this Sunday.
Marcus has been a tireless campaigner on child food poverty, raising £20million to feed kids during the Covid pandemic and successfully lobbying the Government to reverse a decision not to provide free school meals during the summer holidays.
The children he campaigns for are kids just like him and Tom were.
Marcus has said he often went to bed hungry as a childCredit: Refer to Caption
After Tom’s parents divorced when he was 11, his mum Jackie supplemented the income she earned as a secretary by washing up in a pub at night.
Tom says: “As a child you don’t recognise the sort of issues that your mum faces.
“Not once did we go hungry. Not once did we ever feel unloved or feel we missed out on anything.
“But looking back now, as a parent myself, I understand how difficult it must have been for my mum.
The idea of teaching kids was born when 23-year-old Manchester United striker Marcus revealed he had never learned to cook — and had no idea where to start in the kitchenCredit: PA
“Working two jobs to make sure we could just have pasta or bread in the house was such a big thing.
“At 11, none of it sinks in and you just get on with it, but as a grown-up, and having conversations with Mum about this project, the truth of her struggle rings very true.”
One in three UK children live in poverty, with an estimated 2.5million in food-insecure households, meaning they can’t afford sufficients amounts to eat, according to latest figures.
Food bank charity The Trussell Trust yesterday revealed it had handed out 2.5million food parcels since March last year — a rise of 33 per cent on 2019.
Tom will be teaching Marcus how to get going in the kitchen — with families following along too — in their new campaign Full Time Meals: Get Cooking With Marcus And Tom
It is a story all too familiar to Marcus, who has movingly recalled the many times he went to bed hungry.
Tom says: “I’m twice Marcus’s age but we have similar backgrounds, growing up with single mums who were out working in the evening.
“Both myself and Marcus find ourselves in an incredibly fortunate position now.
“But that’s why we wanted to use Marcus’s reach and understanding and my skill set to touch as many people as we can.
“While Marcus went out kicking a football, when I got home from school I cooked my brother Sam’s tea.
Top chef Tom Kerridge learned to cook aged 11, making meals for his younger brother while his single mum worked two jobs to ensure her boys had enough to eat
“So we learned different skill sets from similar childhood experiences and had the same sort of understanding of the issues facing families. We gelled really well, he is a truly remarkable young man.”
The pair’s plan is to show struggling families the best way to use the Government’s new Healthy Start vouchers — which provide parents of preschool children with £4.25 per week to buy fruit, vegetables and pulses.
Their recipes feature ingredients that can be bought with the vouchers — including frozen and tinned vegetables, as well as fresh — and common tinned goods handed out at food banks.
    Tom as a youngster
Quantities are measured with a mug, in case a measuring jug is not available, and most of the dishes can be made with one pan, a knife and a kettle or microwave. Tom adds: “We want to destigmatise the whole issue of cooking and make it really fun and engaging.
“We want every child to have a go at cooking, irrespective of background. If you’re in a class of 35 kids and half of them get free school meals, we want all of them to say, ‘This recipe looks great, Marcus has had a go at cooking it and Tom’s made the recipe simple and easy to follow’.”
Tom, from Gloucester, adds that Marcus, who is dating childhood sweetheart Lucia Loi, 23, threw himself into the cooking lessons and proved to be a natural.
He says: “Marcus had never peeled a carrot but his knife skills are immaculate. He chopped the carrots beautifully the first time we did the satay dish, he’s got a natural talent as a chef.
Marcus has been a tireless campaigner on child food poverty, raising £20million to feed kids during the Covid pandemicCredit: PA
“We’ve been doing lessons, mostly on Zoom, for three months and Marcus has been cooking more and more at home for his housemates.
“I think he’s trying to win brownie points with his girlfriend, too.”
Speaking of his own early cooking efforts, Tom, who is married to sculptor Beth Cullen-Kerridge, 51, said: “I grew up as a child of the 80s, so I cooked Birds Eye potato waffles, Findus crispy pancakes and fish fingers.
“I did learn to make spaghetti bolognese and I would have a go at rice dishes.
Tom says: ‘As a child you don’t recognise the sort of issues that your mum faces’Credit: Rex
“But for an 11-year-old, just turning on a grill and making fish fingers is still cooking and that’s a skill set many people don’t have.”
‘Recipes designed to take fear away’
Tom and Marcus’s mission is to encourage families to try out new dishes.
Tom says: “People live in fear of the kitchen, they’re uncomfortable with it and they don’t know if something’s cooked or not. They worry about cooking instructions.
“But our recipes are designed to take away all that fear so you can just put it in the oven, cook it until it’s hot and trust your self-instinct.
“I’m trying to teach a basic skill set. Normally, when I write cookbooks or cook on television, I’m connecting with a foodie audience, so it’s like someone who already cycles on a good bike getting tips from Bradley Wiggins.
Marcus and Tom plan to show struggling families the best way to use the Government’s new £4.25 Healthy Start vouchersCredit: Getty – Contributor
“What we’re doing here is teaching people how to get on that bike with stabilisers, starting from the beginning — how to peel a carrot, how to boil vegetables.
“It’s really basic stuff using ingredients like frozen vegetables and tinned potatoes — store-cupboard, budget-friendly, essential ingredients to help create a dish.”
As well as the weekly Instagram posts, with 52 recipes across the year, recipe cards of Tom’s dishes will be available at food banks.
Tom says: “Child poverty is a much bigger picture and there’s so much more we can do. But that’s for people above my paygrade.
Get Cooking With Marcus And Tom tutorials will be posted weekly from Sunday on Instagram feed @fulltimemeals

“I’m a chef and I’m just trying to use my skill set to help people who, through no fault of their own, find money really hard to come by.
“It’s that old adage of give someone a fish and they will eat for a day. Teach them to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.”

Get Cooking With Marcus And Tom tutorials will be posted weekly from Sunday on Instagram feed @fulltimemeals.

TOM’S TIPS TO COOK ON A BUDGETTHE recipes in the Full Time Meals campaign use fresh, tinned and frozen ingredients to suit the tightest of budgets.
The tutorials will be available each Sunday on Instagram, but in the meantime Tom gives Sun readers a few tips on how to start cooking from scratch.
    PULSES
HEALTHY Start vouchers can be used for pulses and grains, so tins of pre-cooked lentils and chickpeas are great, or you can buy the dry kind that you just need to soak overnight.
    FRESH OR FROZEN
THESE recipes will be a great way of getting vegetables into kids’ diets. And although they call for fresh veg, they also use a lot of frozen vegetables because that way you’re only taking out exactly what you need each time – making it as budget-friendly as possible.
So, frozen peas, mixed grilled Mediterranean vegetables or frozen spinach are great ingredients.
Frozen protein, such as fish and chicken pieces, also make great ingredients at a lower price – and we use those a lot.
    TINS
STORE cupboard tins, such as tinned new potatoes and soups, form the basis of many of our dishes.
Soups can be used as a tasty pie sauce or pie filling. One dish we may do is a simple leek and potato pie, which is a leek and potato soup, mixed in with tinned potatoes and a freshly chopped leek with filo pastry over the top.
    EQUIPMENT
ALL you need to cook many or these dishes is a pan, a knife for chopping and a mug for measuring.
Usually recipes ask for 150g of this and 200ml of that, but we use a mug so you don’t need a measuring jug or scales.
We even make a Yorkshire pudding batter using just the volume of a normal mug.
Also, many of our dishes can be cooked in one pan because many people only own one pan – and it helps with the washing up!
    TOM’S FAVOURITE BUDGET MEAL
FOR a quick, easy and budget-friendly meal, my go-to is what we call a “fridge-trimming omelette”.
If there’s not much in the house but we have a few tomatoes, a couple of mushrooms and a bit of leftover ham, or leftover veg, I chop it all together, whisk it with a couple of eggs, bake it in one pan and serve it in the middle of the table.
My little man is only five but already he loves whisking the eggs and making an omelette.

Diego Maradona death – Tearful doctor claims footballer was ‘his own worst enemy’ as he defends manslaughter claims

DIEGO Maradona’s personal doctor has claimed the football star was his own worst enemy when it came to accepting help from professionals.
In an emotional statement, Leopoldo Luque said he was “shocked” that he was being probed over alleged negligence amid reports the footballer’s death is being treated as manslaughter.

World Cup winner Maradona, 60, an icon in Argentina, died of heart failure at his home in Buenos Aires on Wednesday after a period of ill health.
Yet, two of the star’s daughters Dalma and Giannina told police yesterday they suspected the medication their father was given was not appropriate.
On Sunday, following a 40-minute search on his home, Dr Luque said he “did the best” he could for his “friend” – while revealing Maradona was battling addiction problems when he died.
Dr Luque said Maradona was his own worst enemy when it came to accepting help from professionals for his addiction problems.

With tears rolling down his face, he said: “I was shocked when police turned up at my door. I’m going to co-operate fully.
“I know what I did and what I did was for Diego’s benefit until the last moment. I did the best I could.
“I feel terrible because a friend died.
“I don’t blame myself for anything. It’s very unfair what’s happening.”

He said Maradona – who had a brain operation earlier this month – looked “very down” in the days leading up to his death.
The doctor said the footballer had issues with pills and booze, adding: “He punished himself in a way I wasn’t going to allow, not as a doctor but as a friend.”
Describing the star as “difficult”, he said: “You couldn’t do anything if Diego didn’t want it.

“He hated doctors and psychologists. With me it was different because I was honest with him. He was my friend.”
The distraught medic said he “didn’t see Diego’s daughters a lot” while insisting his “siblings and nephews adore me.”
Hitting out at the police probe, he said: “Someone is trying to find a scapegoat here when I don’t see one anywhere.
“We all did the best we could with Diego.”
Dr Luque said the former Barcelona and Napoli playmaker should have gone to rehab following his brain op.
He said: “If I’m responsible for anything when it comes to Diego, it was loving him and improving his life.”
Maradona led Argentina to consecutive World Cup finals in 1986 and 1990, winning the first, in a glittering career marked with controversy including drug addiction and involvement with the Italian mafia.
He was also kicked out of the 1994 World Cup for taking performance-enhancing drugs.
The searches of Luque’s property began this morning – four days after the 60-year-old died.

Prosecutors behind the order, said to have been sanctioned by a judge, are understood to be trying to establish whether the football legend was the victim of medical negligence.
The dramatic twist in the death probe followed overnight reports Diego had rowed with Luque in the days before he suffered heart failure.
Local TV stations broadcast images of police entering Luque’s clinic.
Argentinian media are reporting Luque could be questioned as an ‘imputado’, someone who is under official investigation on suspicion of possible mala praxis or negligence, rather than as a simple witness.
There is no suggestion he will be charged with any crime at this stage.
Maradona’s lawyer Matias Morla last week demanded a top-level probe into the emergency response to the retired footballer’s death.
Matias Morla said the first ambulance took more than half an hour to reach the star’s rented house north of Buenos Aires. He called the delay a “criminal idiocy”.
Mr Morla also complained Maradona had not received any medical checks in the 12 hours before he died, appearing to heap more pressure on Luque.

The legendary Argentine footballer was pictured with Luque after undergoing brain surgery – just two weeks before he suffered his fatal cardiac arrest.
Yesterday, it emerged Maradona’s nurse had admitted she lied about an early-morning check-up on him.
The sensational confession added more mystery to the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.
Initial reports pointed to a 24-year-old nephew, who was living with him, being the last person to see him alive over breakfast the day he died.
He was said to have told his relative: “I’m not feeling well” before going back to bed and dying in his sleep before investigators were told he had never got up on Wednesday to eat anything.

Tributes poured in from around the world following the death of the legendary Argentine footballer.
Maradona played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys during his illustrious career.
He scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for Argentina before he retired from professional football in 1997.
