How Chelsea could line up against Man City with Hakim Ziyech set to return but Reece James out injured

CHELSEA host Manchester City on Sunday having won just one of their last six games in all competitions.
The Blues began December in the title conversation, but their poor form has seen them slip to sixth – beneath the likes of Aston Villa.

How Chelsea could line up against Man City

Frank Lampard’s side could get back on track, however, with a morale-boosting win over Man City at Stamford Bridge.
This fixture last season saw the Blues help Liverpool clinch the title, with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s stars.
Currently level on points with underachieving City, Chelsea could desperately do with a win this time around to halt their side.
Edouard Mendy will start between the sticks, despite a few shaky signs of late.

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta will again deputise at right-back with Lampard, 42, confirming a hamstring issue suffered by first-choice Reece James.
He said: “Reece James is out. Reece has got a small hamstring problem.”
Ben Chilwell should be fine to take his place at left-back meanwhile – while the rested Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva will resume their places at the heart of the Blues’ back four after nights off against Villa on Monday.
Lampard has a clean bill of health in central midfield, giving him some selection conundrums.

N’Golo Kante is likeliest to start, with Jorginho dropping out, and could be flanked by Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.
This leaves £70million summer buy Kai Havertz in reserve, as well as underused academy starlet Billy Gilmour.
Lampard possesses a multitude of options for his front three, and has seen his embarrassment of riches further strengthened by the return to fitness of Hakim Ziyech.
On the Moroccan he said: “He’s fit to train. He’s trained for the last two or three days. I will make the decision as to whether he is ready to start.”
Perhaps Callum Hudson-Odoi deserves the nod on the right wing, however, having been a rare bright spark in Chelsea’s last two games.
Tammy Abraham will likely get the nod over Olivier Giroud, while Christian Pulisic should start over the misfiring Timo Werner on the left.

Ex-Man City and Inter Milan star Maicon joins Italian fourth division side Sona aged 39

FORMER Manchester City star Maicon has joined Italian side Sona at the age of 39.
The veteran defender is still going strong and has no plans to call time on his playing career.

The ex-Inter Milan full-back is making his European return by joining the Verona-based Serie D side.
The Brazilian has been playing in his homeland for fourth-division club Villa Nova Atletico.
But Maicon has decided to return to Europe with no sign of the defender ending his playing career.
Sona chief Claudio Ferrarese recently told Padova Sport: “One of my assistants has contacts in Brazil, where Maicon plays for Villa Nova. He is fit and he’d like to return to Italy.

“He has businesses running in Milan and he could live and play in Verona until the end of the season.
“It would be a dream and a huge step in terms of visibility for us.”

Maicon made his name at Inter Milan, winning four Serie A titles and the Champions League under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
The defender joined Man City in 2012 but only made nine Premier League appearances before moving to Roma the following season.

A return to Italy for Maicon at Sona suggests playing into his 40s is a realistic prospect for the former Brazil international.

Pique reveals plot to ‘seduce’ Lionel Messi into staying at Barcelona with ace linked with Chelsea or Man City transfer

GERARD PIQUE has revealed Barcelona’s plot to ‘seduce’ Lionel Messi into staying at the Nou Camp.
Messi, 33, is out of contract in June and is free to discuss terms with other teams from January.

The Argentine and Barcelona all-time top scorer requested to leave the club after the demoralising 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich last season.
Premier League duo Manchester City and Chelsea were linked with moves for the attacker.
Messi would later decide to stay after it was made clear that he would not be allowed to leave the club for free.
Barcelona team-mate Pique, however, has urged Messi to stay at the Nou Camp and hopes the club can ‘seduce’ him to stay and see out the rest of his playing career.

Speaking at a question and answer session for the CRIS Cancer Foundation, Pique said: “We hope he stays. It’s a personal decision. We will see. But as long as he’s wearing the Barca shirt, there is always hope.
“We hope to seduce him to stay for many more years.”
Any discussions of a new deal will have to wait until January when a new president is elected, after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in October.
Victor Font and Joan Laporta are two of the favourites to succeed Bartomeu, but they’re faced with one of the toughest tasks from minute one of their presidency; convince Messi to stay.

The club has got off to a horrible start in the league, they sit eighth after nine games and nine points behind league leaders Real Sociedad.
And Messi was rested in the thumping 4-0 win away at Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League, with Ronald Koeman hoping he comes back fresh and ready to help Barca get their league campaign back on track.
Speaking on Saturday ahead of the weekend’s game, Koeman said: “Messi had a good break this week, as did Frenkie de Jong.
“Both had played nearly every minute for us this season, in addition to many games with their national teams.

“The can’t keep going and going and going. To avoid problems, we left them at home in midweek.
“But we will need them (against Osasuna).”
And Barca indeed needed them, and the rest clearly did Messi the world of good.
Barcelona smashed four past Osasuna with Messi getting on the scoresheet, and to celebrate Messi took off his shirt revealing a Newell’s Old Boys shirt in memory of the late, great Diego Maradona.

Tottenham 2 Man City 0: Son and Lo Celso fire Spurs top of the league as Jose Mourinho has last laugh over Pep Guardiola

    IT’S ON, IT REALLY IS.
Tipping Tottenham for the title never feels wise, but after this result and this performance, why the hell not?

In guiding Spurs to this rope-a-dope victory, Jose Mourinho broke his own personal hoodoo, winning back-to-back competitive games against Pep Guardiola for the first time in his career.
A lot more of the clinical finishing, hard work and good fortune that earned Tottenham all three points will be required if they are to be champions of England for the first time in 60 years.
But what you can say for sure is that Manchester City are very capable of not reclaiming their crown.
An all-too-familiar defensive lapse allowed Son Heung-Min to open the scoring. VAR intervened, as it always seems to when they play Spurs, to deny them the equaliser that their domination of possession and territory deserved.

Gabriel Jesus failed to take his chances and as the search for an equaliser became more intense, the home team broke and Giovani Lo Celso grabbed a crucial second with what may well have been his first touch.
You had to laugh. Everything that Mourinho touches is turning to gold right now.
He is not playing football in the grand Spurs tradition, but by hook or by crook, it’s winning football and Spurs sit top of the league as the season begins in earnest.
The international break had brought contrasting emotions for the two clubs.

At Spurs’ first game since the death of former goalkeeper Ray Clemence, a group of eight of his Tottenham team-mates looked on while the current squad warmed up wearing T-shirts that bore his name.
City, on the other hand, had just announced that Guardiola would be staying at the club until 2023.

But if his players were happy about the news, they had a funny way of showing it.
The back five that Guardiola fielded was signed at a combined cost of £250m or more.
Yet with barely four minutes on the clock, it took just one scooped pass by Tanguy Ndombele to take all four defenders out of the game and leave Son with the task of beating Ederson.
Which he did, with the calmness and ruthlessness that has typified his extraordinary start to the season.
City quickly resumed their domination of the ball and should have equalised within minutes, but Jesus dithered and allowed Toby Alderweireld to recover to make a fantastic blocking tackle.
Then Spurs should have made it two with a fantastic break, but Harry Kane was offside.
After Rodri sent a header straight at Hugo Lloris, the visitors suffered their usual dose of VAR pain against these opponents.
The most painful incident remains the stoppage-time “winner” by Raheem Sterling that was – correctly – ruled out for offside in the Champions League quarter final second leg of 2019.
Guadiola’s side had felt hard done by in both Premier League clashes last season. There was penalty controversy in Tottenham’s 2-0 home win in February, a game overseen by the same referee, Mike Dean.

Lo Celso then came off the bench to seal the points for SpursCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
And back in August, the tone for City’s season was set when Jesus had a late winner ruled out for handball in the build-up by Laporte.
Just for the sake of variety, the roles were reversed this time. Dean went to the pitchside monitor and could hardly miss the way Jesus controlled the ball with his right arm before laying it back for Laporte to sweep home.
A City equaliser still felt inevitable. But after Ferran Torres took his second tumble in the penalty area in the hope of a penalty, and the ball broke to Jesus, the Brazilian could only shoot wide.
A posse of City players surrounded Dean as everyone left the pitch at half-time, complaining about the disallowed goal, or the unawarded penalties or the unfairness of life in general – or probably all three.
The second half began with Mourinho standing on the edge of his technical area, yelling “Press the ball” and “Out” at his players as City picked up where they had left off, camping in the Spurs half.
While Guardiola’s side passed and probed, Mourinho’s men were happy to launch long balls into the channels to relieve the pressure. At times, the contrast in styles was almost comical.
De Bruyne was inches away with a low shot from the edge of the box early in the half, but that was as close as the visitors came.
Alderweireld and Eric Dier made some timely interventions to make sure it stayed that way as Spurs defended for their lives.

Son had a good chance on the break but the South Korean’s touch to take the ball past Ederson as he burst on to Kane’s through ball was too heavy and the chance for a sucker punch was lost.
But not for long. Within seconds of replacing Ndombele, Lo Celso collected another pinpoint pass from Kane and stroked the ball past Ederson.
On came Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden, but too late to change the course of the game. A late Lloris save from Ruben Dias made sure.
There’s still plenty of things that could go wrong for Mourinho and his team, not least injuries to key players like Alderweireld, who had to be substituted.
But in the most open season since Leicester’s title win of 2015/16, why not Spurs?
And why not Mourinho, just when he was supposed to be yesterday’s man?

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher raging at ‘nonsense’ Man City penalty against Liverpool and ask ‘how can you defend?’

JAMIE CARRAGHER and Gary Neville both fumed at the decision to award Manchester City a penalty after ANOTHER controversial handball.

The referee watched the replays on the VAR monitor before pointing to the spot.
Liverpool may feel justice was served when De Bruyne missed the target from the spot kick.
In the game prior, Wolves were also harshly punished when Max Kilman was adjudged to have blocked Dennis Praet’s cross with his arm despite standing just a yard away.
And former defenders Neville and Carragher were left far from happy with the decisions and rule book.

Before the pen was awarded, Neville said: “What’s the difference between that and the earlier [Leicester] one? He’s got to give it.
“He’s got a look on his face that he almost doesn’t want to give it, because in the real world that’s not a penalty.
“But in this world he’s probably going to have to give it.”
When it was confirmed, Neville added: “It’s not a pen for me, but it’s more of one than the one earlier. But the whole thing is a nonsense, let’s be clear.”

Carragher said: “If you’re a defender now I don’t know what you’re supposed to do.
“We’re asking defenders to run along with their arms behind your back, that’s what we’re getting to. How can you defend?”
Neville then responded: “I reckon you and John Terry would have given away about 40 a season, at least.”
Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel also slammed the decision that went FOR his own team.
Speaking on the handball rule after his side’s 1-0 win he said: “It’s obviously difficult and a difficult call for the referees but the whole interpretation for the handball rule.
“I don’t think anyone really knows it – it’s on the day whatever VAR and the referee feels.”

Barcelona hopes of keeping Lionel Messi boosted by Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation in transfer blow to Man City

BARCELONA’S hopes of keeping Lionel Messi have been given a huge boost following the resignation of club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, according to reports.
The 57-year-old and his entire board of directors left the club on Tuesday following the defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Bartomeu had come under increasing pressure after falling out with star player Lionel Messi and the club’s decline, both on the pitch and off it.
It is now believed his absence could help the Catalan giants keep Messi for another season – in what would come as a huge blow to Manchester City.
The Telegraph report that Bartomeu’s departure could have a big impact on what Messi chooses to do next, with the Argentine star now more willing to sign a new contract.
His current deal was set to run out next summer – meaning Pep Guardiola’s Man City and other European clubs could swoop in as soon as January and sign him up on a pre-contract.

But the end of the internal power struggle against Bartomeu means the Argentine superstar may now be tempted to retire at his beloved Barca.
It would end hopes of the 33-year-old linking up again with Guardiola, after the pair achieved remarkable success together at Barcelona, including two Champions Leagues where they outplayed all opponents.
Earlier this month Etihad bosses were also talking up the prospect of a reunion, with chief operating officer Omar Berrada hailing the generational talent and claiming that all clubs would ‘explore’ bringing him in.
But with Bartomeu now gone, the game has changed for any clubs sniffing at the possibility.

A petition of 20,000 demanded that the former president walk, despite his two-term reign ending in March.
Large swathes of the fanbase grew unhappy as the Messi transfer saga escalated in the summer, with the prospect of the forward taking the club to court at one point a genuine possibility.
Messi had wanted to leave following the club’s humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final and believed a clause in his contract allowed him to exit for free.
But the extension of the season due to coronavirus complicated matters and the club claimed Messi instead needed to stump up £623m in order to quit.

Although he stayed, fans were left unimpressed by the handling of the situation, with the row spilling over into the public and dominating the Spanish press for multiple weeks.
Resentment also grew over the club’s finances – which left manager Ronald Koeman limited in the transfer market – and the lack of major trophies won in recent years.
In his resignation speech, Bartomeu also claimed he had accepted proposals for the club to join the European Super League.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta left it too late to start the Partey against Man City

MIKEL ARTETA waited until eight minutes from time to get the Partey going for Arsenal.
And with hindsight the Gunners boss will feel he left it a bit too late.

    1

The £45million arrival from Atletico Madrid replaced Granit Xhaka with his team a goal down and chasing the game.
Many Gunners fans would like to have had a glimpse of their latest new face earlier and there was little time for him to make his mark.
And on the face of it, this looked a game that was tailor-made for the 27-year-old former Atletico Madrid man.

When you go to Manchester City you know you will spend a lot of time defending and without the ball.
But that’s exactly the sort of game Partey would have encountered on a regular basis for Diego Simeone’s dogged side in the Spanish capital.
Instead he opted for Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka – both of whom have impressed in the Gunners encouraging start to the season and were rewarded here.
It was a surprise call from the Emirates chief but in the opening stages at least he would have been pleased with the way things started.

With no Kevin de Bruyne to worry about the duo had to get to grips with Pep Guardiola’s fluid formation and work out exactly who was playing where.

The visitors had a nice defensive shape although they were opened up too easily by RIyad Mahrez and Phil Foden for the opening goal.
Having gone a goal down, it was Xhaka who almost got them back on terms as his clever one two put Bukayo Saka in on goal but Ederson made a great save.
The game became something of a war of attrition – with much of the action taking place in the middle third of the pitch.
In the end Arteta did not want to change things too early – wanting his team to stay in the game for as long as possible.
Partey looked neat and tidy when he came on – breaking up a couple of City breakaways and keeping things simple with the ball.
Gunners fans will be urging Arteta to start the Partey against Leicester next weekend.

Pep Guardiola arrives for Man City vs Arsenal in modest £30,000 electric Nissan Leaf with apparent dent from crash

PEP GUARDIOLA drove to Manchester City’s Premier League match with Arsenal in a modest electric Nissan.
The car was a far cry from the supercars his players pulled up to the ground in.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola was seen arriving at the Etihad in a modest electric Nissan

Guardiola was filmed driving into the Etihad car park in a Nissan Leaf – which costs around £30,000 – with a notable dent and scratch mark on the rear wing.
The Spaniard’s wheels were spotted by ESPN journalist Joao Castelo-Branco while he waited outside the stadium ahead of the game.
Castelo-Branco captioned the video: “Guardiola with the simplest car in the class.
“Manchester City squad arriving by car to the stadium to face Arsenal.”

Some of City’s playing squad could be seen arriving in Audis and Rolls-Royce 4x4s, cars which cost way over six figures, in sharp contrast with their manager.
Guardiola will be hoping his team can use their clash with the Gunners to get into gear for the rest of the season.
The former Barcelona manager faced his former assistant – and now Arsenal – manager Mikel Arteta amid a stuttering start to the campaign.

City have just four points from three Premier League games so far this term.

After an opening game win at Wolves, the Sky Blues were humbled 5-2 by Leicester at home and drew with Leeds before the international break.
But City managed to get back to winning ways as Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game at the Etihad to secure a 1-0 win.
