Carabao Cup final pushed back until end of April in bid to have fans at Wembley showpiece

THE CARABAO CUP final has been moved from February 28 to Sunday April 25, 2021.
The EFL have made the decision in a bid to have as many fans as possible attend the Wembley showdown which will kick off at 4pm.

In a statement, the EFL said: “This season’s Carabao Cup final has been rescheduled and will now take place on Sunday 25 April 2021, with a 4pm kick-off.
“It is the objective of the League to stage the final with as many supporters in attendance as possible.
“And the decision has therefore been taken to move the final from its original date of Sunday February 28, 2021 to later in the year.
“The number of fans permitted will be dependent on Government guidance in place at the time.

“And it is hoped that moving the date to later in the year will give clubs and their fans the best opportunity to attend in person.
“The competition is set to continue this week, with the quarter-finals to be played across Tuesday December 22 and Wednesday December 23, with all four games live on Sky Sports.”
Just 2,000 fans are currently allowed to attend matches in Tiers One and Two.
But teams in Tiers three and four – which London and large parts of the South East were plunged into at the weekend – must play behind closed doors.

Many clubs – including current holders Manchester City – had pushed for this season’s competition to be axed to make space in the crowded fixture schedule.
The first round fixtures began on August 29.
But such ideas were quashed and the quarter-finals will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday.
Brentford host Newcastle while Man City travel to Arsenal on Tuesday.
Before Stoke play Tottenham at home and Manchester United meet Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Tottenham awarded a bye to face Chelsea in Carabao Cup after Orient clash was axed due to coronavirus outbreak

TOTTENHAM have been awarded their tie with Leyton Orient, the EFL have confirmed.
The League Cup third round clashed had initially been scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

But the decision was made late on to axe the match after a “number of” Leyton Orient players and staff tested positive for Covid-19.
The O’s hoped that the tie would be postponed rather than cancelled, in order to still gain the £100,000 windfall from a televised match at this stage of the competition.
In accordance with competition rules, however, and amid a packed schedule, Spurs will now progress without having to take to the field.
Orient boss Ross Embleton was understandably gutted at the news.

He said: “We’re devastated that this has happened, but this club is used to setbacks.
“It’s really important that players, staff and supporters stick together through tough times.”
The Lilywhites will host Chelsea next week in round four, with Jose Mourinho looking to get his first win over former star player Frank Lampard as a manager.
What sort of team the 57-year-old will be able to field against his former club, however, remains to be seen – with Spurs set to host Newcastle United on Sunday and Maccabi Haifa on Thursday.

Orient, meanwhile, have seen their League Two clash with Mansfield Town on Saturday postponed as their players continue to self-isolate.
O’s chairman Nigel Travis had been hellbent on convincing the EFL to make their dream Spurs tie go ahead at a later date.
He told talkSPORT on Tuesday: “We have talked to the EFL and we are assuming this is a postponement
“We’re going to lose £2.5million this year, also anything that can help us reduce that loss is clearly important. We are struggling so games like this have to take place.
“We have a great relationship with Spurs, we’ve looked at their fixtures and this game can be played. There has to be a will, because this game is worth £150,000 profit to us, so we have to play this game.
“I recognise the guidelines and we have spoken to the league about extenuating circumstances. I can assure you, we will not be the first club facing this this year. Even Man City had a player test positive recently.
“We expect this game to be played and we will campaign very strongly for this game to be played. Clubs of our size depend on games like this.”
