Arsenal fans taunt West Brom with X-rated ‘we’re winning away’ song after Aubameyang scores opener in Carabao Cup tie

FANS at the Hawthorns enjoyed some good banter on Wednesday evening as they laughed at Arsenal’s recent misfortune. Both sets of supporters mocked Mikel Arteta’s side after Gunners skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the opener.

Arsenal fans celebrated the striker’s 17th-minute opener by chanting: “We’re winning away, how s**t must you be?”
But within seconds, the home fans responded by singing: “We’re playing our kids, how s**t must you be.”
The strike eased the pressure on under-fire Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, temporarily at least.
His side have lost their first two games of the season and have been blasted for their poor performances against Brentford and Chelsea.
They haven’t won away since April 15, when they beat Slavia Prague 4-0 in the Europa Legaue.
So it was no wonder that the travelling Gooners took the chance to celebrate winning away.

Arteta had put a very strong side out, including new boys Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale.
So West Brom could be excused for belittling their achievement of going one up.
Aubameyang made it two just before half time, before Pepe made it 3-0 to really give the away end a much-needed cause for celebration.
Chants of ‘3-0 on your big day out’ could then be heard from the joyous North Londoners in the crowd.
Their next trip is to the Etihad on Saturday to take on Manchester City.
And Arteta will be hoping to give them plenty more to celebrate then too.

Wigan chairman savages Tottenham in cheeky tweet and jokes he is ‘monitoring the Harry Kane situation closely’

NEW Wigan chairman Talal Al-Hammad has mocked Tottenham by telling his Twitter followers the League One side are ‘monitoring’ Harry Kane. The England captain wants to leave North London and the Wigan chief jokingly offered to have him at the DW Stadium next season.

Having lifted silverware more recently than Tottenham Hotspur we are continuing to monitor the Harry Kane situation closely https://t.co/UV0Dw8ZEMt— Talal Al Hammad | طلال الحماد (@Talalalhammad32) May 21, 2021

The banter started when Al-Hammad tweeted an inspirational quote.
He wrote on the social media platform: “Dream big – dream very big.
“Work hard – work very hard, don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon. Up the Tics.”
Al-Hammad, who became Wigan’s new chairman in March following a takeover, then received a bit of banter from a fan.
The Latics supporter tweeted: “Can’t believe we’re in the running for Kane.”
To which Al-Hammad replied: “Having lifted silverware more recently than Tottenham Hotspur we are continuing to monitor the Harry Kane situation closely.”
The Wigan chief was referring to the club’s FA Cup final victory against Manchester City in 2013, when Ben Watson’s header secured a famous 1-0 win.

Wigan were a Premier League club at the time but were relegated the same season and have gone on to struggle financially, dropping down to League One three times.
But the Latics have also won the division twice during that time, meaning they’ve lifted three trophies since Tottenham’s last success in 2008, when they won the League Cup.
Kane, 27, is yet to win a major club honour in his career and he’s made no secret of his desire to play at the highest level and win trophies.
Tottenham have failed to qualify for the Champions League for the second successive season and seem unlikely to even reach the Europa League.
They are currently seventh in the Premier League, three points behind West Ham in the final UEL spot heading into the last game of the season.
If they remain in their current position, Tottenham will compete in the Europa Conference League next term – Uefa’s new tertiary competition.

Some Spurs fans were furious with Al-Hammad’s banter, with one replying: “Us buying Alfie Devine is one of the reasons your club still exists.”
Wigan sold the 16-year-old midfielder, who scored in the FA Cup against Marine earlier in the season, to Tottenham last summer during the peak of their financial woes.
And one Latics fan wasn’t impressed by the chairman’s joke either, telling him current strikers Callum Lang and Will Keane are BETTER than the England forward.
The Wigan pair have scored 20 League One goals between them this term, two less than Kane’s managed in the Premier League.
SunSport understands Kane is not interested in joining Wigan this summer.

Chelsea boss Hayes expects Bristol City to make Conti Cup final ‘extremely difficult’

EMMA HAYES has dismissed “disrespectful” assumptions that Bristol City could face a thrashing when they battle Chelsea for the Conti Cup.
And the Blues gaffer expects her aces will be in for a tough afternoon despite beating the Robins 5-0 in the top-flight in January.

Hayes, 44, was speaking ahead of the duel at Watford’s home ground with Chelsea bidding to win their ninth major trophy.
And the Kingsmeadow chief will pit her wits against Bristol boss Matt Beard who led the Blues to their first FA Cup final in 2012 during a three-year managerial spell at the club.
The WSL champs have scored 14 goals against the Robins this term including nine netted when the teams clashed in the league in September.
Hayes said: “I know Matt Beard well enough to know that his team will do everything they can to make sure it’s an extremely difficult day for my players.

“I just think having a conversation (of a big scoreline for Chelsea) in itself is disrespectful to Bristol.
“I can probably cite millions of games in history from AFC Wimbledon (winning the FA Cup) back in the day and Wigan were underdogs when they won the cup.
“There’s no doubt this team will come out and play with the mentality that Matt’s instilled in them.
“I always think they are the teams you must watch the most.”

Hayes, whose side face Everton three days after today’s final, hopes her players can recapture the league cup they won for the first time last term.
And while Beth England’s concussion will leave the Blues without the striker who netted twice in that 2-1 victory against Arsenal, Hayes hopes for a repeat of Ann-Katrin Berger’s heroics in goal.

Hayes added: “I think everybody is starting to see why she’s the best goalkeeper in England.
“We already knew that. But everybody’s talking about that and I think Ann could go on to be one of the best in the world if she keeps performing the way that she does.
“Her level of consistency is so high and exceptional”.
Meanwhile, Bristol have undergone a reversal of fortune moving off the foot of the WSL table for the first time since the start of the season.
Beard, 43, who is covering for Tanya Oxtoby, who is due to give birth to a baby boy this month, praised the Robins boss for steering the team to the Conti trophy semis.
The stand-in Twerton Park gaffer wants his squad to embrace the experience of going for glory in their first league cup final.
And the former West Ham manager is looking forward to seeing Oxtoby attend this afternoon’s encounter which coincides with Mother’s Day.

Matt Beard praised Tanya Oxtoby for leading Bristol to the league cup semis before going on maternity leaveCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Beard said: “This is obviously a unique situation with me being interim head coach and Tanya on maternity leave.
“I’ve always had a good relationship with Tanya, even when I was at West Ham and she’s someone that I’ve gone to for advice in the past, especially from a  psychological background.
“I’ve had conversations where I’ve needed help because she knows the team, knows the players and knows the club.
“I said to the players that to get to any cup final doesn’t happen a lot in players’ or managers’ careers.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to win trophies and get to cup finals and you just have to embrace those occasions and appreciate where you are when you get there.”

EFL chief Rick Parry warns Uefa new Champions League format could decimate English football

EFL chairman Rick Parry has warned Uefa its Champions League expansion plans risk decimating the fabric of English football.
European chiefs are set to confirm the new plans to come into effect from 2024 after getting the backing of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Rick Parry has warned Uefa of the threat faced by smaller clubsCredit: PA:Press Association

But Parry, who was supported by Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish, suggested the planned extra 100 Champions League games per season would destroy the League Cup and be potentially fatal for some of English football’s most historic clubs.
Parry told the European League’s Club Advisory Platform virtual meeting: “The 72 clubs in the EFL are at the heart of their communities
“The League Cup has been in existence for 60 years and is owned and managed by the EFL.
“One of the conditions on the formation of the Premier League was that all clubs would play in it.

“But Uefa proposal poses a major threat to the League Cup, especially with regard to the teams in the Champions League – and it will have a massive effect on EFL revenues
“We estimate we could lose one third of the revenues we distribute to our clubs – which could pose a very real threat to the existence of those clubs.”
Parry was echoed by Selhurst chief Parish, who added: “This would have a devastating effect on domestic competitions in England.
“The League Cup is the largest financial contributor to the EFL and this will be the end of that Cup in its entirety or reduce it to a youth competition.”

Clubs like us feel so remote from the decision-making and there is a huge conflict of interest.
    Steve ParishCrystal Palace chairman

Uefa have reached agreement with Europe’s biggest clubs that there will be no weekend games in its club competitions, leaving the field clear for domestic leagues.
The deal effectively kills off the planned European Super League, despite efforts led by Real Madrid to breathe life into the dying embers of the breakaway plan.
But Prem clubs want to thwart the proposal to play two of the 10 games in the initial league phase of the 36-team Champions League “Swiss model” competition in January.
Uefa will formally announce the new format next month but Parish also blasted Nyon chiefs and the influential European Club Association for ignoring the voices of those left out of the elite group.
He said: “Clubs like us feel so remote from the decision-making and there is a huge conflict of interest, with Uefa and the ECA now choosing to make changes for the long term in the middle of a pandemic.
“We are expected to accept them because they’re not as bad as they could have been.
“But there will be a huge impact on us and the creep is never ending.“
Parish and Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow also condemned the proposal, backed by the Prem’s ‘Big Six’, for a backdoor safety net to be available for two clubs to qualify for the Champions League through their Uefa coefficient score.

Parry fears for the future of the League Cup if the changes occurCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The Palace chief said: “If we took it on last season, Leicester were fifth but the two clubs below them [Spurs and Arsenal] would have qualified for the Champions League based on an arbitrary period of success in Europe.”
Purslow added: “It affects domestic competitions if you boost teams from the Europa League to the Champions League based on what they did in the past.
“That would give clubs in the Premier League a £45m advantage over a team that may have finished ahead of them. Most people would see that as unfair and not right.”

Bristol City manager Beard hopeful of Salmon’s England progress and reckons ‘tough game’ pressure is on rivals

MATT BEARD thinks Ebony Salmon’s “raw talent” could see the Lionesses starlet excel on the international stage.
And the Bristol City boss reckons his relegation rivals will be feeling the heat with tricky clashes facing West Ham and Aston Villa.

Beard was speaking ahead of the Robins’ match with Reading which takes place a day after the Hammers host Arsenal, and Villa’s trip to Manchester United.
And the interim Robins boss believes the result against the Royals will not be vital to City’s top-flight survival despite them being bottom.
Beard, 43, said: “We know we need to pick points up because we’ve only got eight games left.
“But it’s not vital in the sense that if we don’t get anything out of it that it puts us in a lot of trouble.

“There are a lot of tough games for the teams in and around us so we’ll be in a better position, knowing what’s going to happen on Sunday going into that game on Monday.
“I think for us psychologically it’s a benefit. And I think if you look at the results from last weekend in some of the catch-up games, obviously everyone around us played an extra game and nobody got any points”.
Bristol City, who are 12th, have played one game more than Villa and West Ham who are tenth and eleventh.
Their clash with the Royals comes almost two weeks after Robins ace Salmon made her senior England debut in the Lionesses 6-0 drubbing of Northern Ireland.

And the former United striker, 20, who left the Red Devils for the South West in 2019, is thought to have made a good impression on England Women’s coaching staff.
Beard added: “The thing with Ebony is she’s such a raw talent with her pace and power.
“[England’s staff] wanted to know whether I felt she was ready.
“And of course I let them know that she could play not just down the middle but also wide.
“We’re putting a plan in place for her to make sure that she continues to be considered. But the feedback I have had is that she has done well.”
A Conti Cup final date with Chelsea is up next for his side after they host Reading.
The clash at the home of Watford will be the first league cup final for the Robins in their 23-year history.

And it is a match Salmon, who has scored five times in 14 league games, is aiming to give her all in alongside her team-mates.
Salmon said: “The results that we’ve got in the Conti Cup have given us the confidence and momentum that we needed to go and push on in the league which we’ve been doing recently.
“We’ve got a few results and we’ve picked up points. I think, for us, just the opportunity of taking part in a cup final is going to be huge.
“And I think the confidence and just the experience of that is really going to help us in our push to stay in the league.”

KIERA SKEELS says reaching her first-ever cup final is a ‘dream’ with Bristol City set to battle Chelsea for the Conti Tyres trophy.

Skeels sparked scenes of ecstatic celebrations at Twerton Park after heading her side into the finals and a 1-0 win against semis opponents Leicester City.
And the England Under-19 centre-back has vowed to do her best to help the Robins, who are bottom, keep their spot in the women’s top-flight.
Skeels, 20, said: “Getting to a cup final is something I have always dreamed of. I can’t believe it’s actually happened.
“It’s massive and it’s something we are going to work really hard on. We obviously want to give it our best shot and see what happens.

“We know we needed to dig deep if we wanted to get to there and it’s something we have worked hard on in training
“I’m just so happy for this opportunity to come in and help the team as much as I can. They have been so supportive.”
Skeels – on loan from Reading until the end of the season – is one of two January transfer deadline day signings acquired by interim Robins gaffer Matt Beard.
And the Twerton Park manager, who is standing-in for long-serving Bristol boss Tanya Oxtoby, praised the England starlet’s swift impact.

Beard said: “She’s a lovely girl, a really good player and I am grateful we had the opportunity to bring her in as it allows us to push Jasmine Matthews into midfield.
“We just have the ability now to tweak things here and there for certain games.
“We’re really pleased that the work we have been putting in over the last two or three weeks has been coming off.”
Former Irons gaffer Beard is set for a tantalising reunion with West Ham with the Robins due to play the Hammers next in the league.
The encounter will see the Bristol City chief will go head-to-head with his old side for the first time following his departure from the club in November.

And it’s one of three big games coming up for the Robins who are currently just two points behind the Irons who have a game in hand.

“I’m the Bristol City manager now and my priority is keeping Bristol City in the division.”

Man Utd 0 Man City 2: Stones and Fernandinho strike as Pep Guardiola sets up Carabao Cup final showdown vs Jose Mourinho

MANCHESTER CITY’S love affair with the League Cup continues.
In late April at Wembley they will be aiming to win it for a sixth time in eight seasons.

United’s backline were left speechless by City’s openerCredit: Reuters

It has been in permanent residency at the Etihad since 2018 with a hat-trick of victories under Pep Guardiola.
Now they go for one more and with it will be level with Liverpool on eight in the all time list.
Standing in Pep’s way will be Jose Mourinho, ten years after they last met in a major domestic cup final.
Then it was the Copa del Rey and Mourinho triumphed as his Real Madrid team beat Barcelona 1-0.

He will have a plan again to deny a free flowing Pep team.
It will have to be a very good one, because City are flying right now.
After early season wobbles this is 12 unbeaten in all competitions, nine of them wins and nine clean sheets.
Last night’s triumph came courtesy of a John Stones close range stab from Phil Foden’s free kick on 50 minutes then with seven minutes left Fernandinho’s 20-yard grass cutter sealed the deal.

Fernandinho volleyed City into a 2-0 leadCredit: PA:Press Association

United went into the game in form, but in this form City remain better, much better.
To have controlled this game to the extent they did against a side that is joint top of the league on points, shows just how good they are right now.
After a drab goalless draw here in the league last month the hope was that these two inform sides would go for it in this one-off semi-final encounter.
They answered that call for excitement by putting the ball in the net three times in the opening 25 minutes.
Unfortunately the linesman’s flag backed up by the VAR denied a goal every time.
The first came in just the second minute when Marcus Rasford broke through and his shot was saved by Zack Steffen but rebounded back in off John Stones.
When Phil Foden’s cross shot was turned in by Ilkay Gundogen three minutes later he was also clearly beyond the last defender.
He wagged his finger suggesting the officials had got it wrong, but you can’t get it wrong anymore so he was wasting his time really.

Phil Foden slotted past Dean Henderson… but was thwarted by the offside flagCredit: AP:Associated Press
Foden was miles off when he latched on to Kevin De Bruyne’s through ball and slipped a shot through Dean Henderson’s legs.
There would have been no flag however had De Bruyne’s shot in the 12th minute been an inch to the left.
Found by Raheem Sterling he released a shot from 20yards that curled at the last moment and walloped back of the left hand upright that was still shaking at half time.
De Bruyne, as against Chelsea in City impressive 3-0 league win last Sunday, was the architect of everything that was good about the visitors.
He just plays everywhere, impossible to track or pick up.
United were expecting him as a false nine but Riyad Mahrez began in that role.
De Bruyne would just go wherever and weave his patterns around the pitch.
Still, clear cut chances for both sides were at a premium in the first half.

The closest United came to scoring in that opening period came in the ninth minute of an exciting start when a superb reverse pass by Scott McTominay just outside the box gave an unmarked Bruno Fernandes space to shoot.
He arrowed the ball to the top right-hand corner but Steffen’s save at full stretch was out of the top draw.
In the second-half City upped a gear and left United behind. It was just five minutes old when they took the lead.
It was a needless free-kick given away by Scott McTominay which lead to the goal.
Raheem Sterling was not in a dangerous position when he pulled him back and conceded the kick. But as Foden lined it up the alarm bells must have been ringing.
His delivery was brilliant curling it in low behind the line of red and blue shirts.
Fingers might be pointed at Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof for not intervening but such was the pace on the ball that a touch from either would have turned it into their own net.
At the far post Stones broke from the pack to stick out a foot and divert it home.

City finished United off late onCredit: Getty – Pool
His sixth goal in his City career all in the Cups.
While they were ahead City could not be comfortable.
No team has earned more than United’s 18 league points from being behind this season.
Still it looked like if anyone was going to add to the scoreline it was City them.
Joao Cancelo sent a scorching long range drive just over and Mahrez pulled out a superb save from Henderson when he to had a go from outside the box.
United started to get desperate as Anthony Martial’s dive in the area proved when he tried to win a pen.
Even United weren’t getting that one.
Then in the 83rd minute Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s poor clearing header from a Kevin De Bruyne corner was returned by Fernandino with a drive that bounced through a crowded box and past Henderson.
The scoreline finally reflected their dominance.

Stoke City 1 Tottenham 3: Harry Kane and Ben Davies spare Spurs’ blushes in Carabao Cup quarters after second-half scare

HERE is an omen Spurs fans can get properly excited about — its name is Jose Mourinho.
For more than a decade, these eternal optimists from North London have been desperately searching for a  sign that they might actually win something.

Harry Kane made it 3-1 late onCredit: Reuters

It has made it a bit embarrassing that each time they have appeared close, Arsenal somehow stumbled their way to lifting the FA Cup.
But Mourinho was catapulted into White Hart Lane to win trophies  and now Spurs really  have a reason to believe this could be their year.
The season will even end with the number one, which used to  guarantee a pot — until   their  post-war run ended in 2001.
Despite being annoyed with Dele Alli, Mourinho saw his team overcome a cold and wet night in the Potteries to deservedly beat Stoke in the  quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

For the Portuguese coach, next month’s one-off shoot-out will be his fifth League Cup semi-final.  In the previous four, he has gone on to win the trophy.
Tottenham have not won any silverware since the League Cup in 2008  but were drawn with Brentford.
And Mourinho said: “To win this trophy, we need to win two matches.
“But, of course,  it will be two very difficult matches.

“Brentford, for me, do not play like a Championship side but more like Premier League. We are in the semi-finals  to fight.”
Tottenham certainly have a better chance of winning the Carabao Cup than the Premier League.
It was massively important that after a poor set of results, namely a draw with Crystal Palace and losses to Liverpool and Leicester, Spurs avoided following Newcastle out of the tournament.
And despite making life difficult for themselves in the second half, there was still only one quality team in this with Harry Winks and Dele — until playing a part in Stoke’s leveller — both impressing.

On current form, it seems unlikely Tottenham will be jumping at the chance of extending Gareth Bale’s loan to a second season.
But he made the most of his start by grabbing the opening goal.
This meant he  scored in successive League Cup appearances, although they just happened to be eight years apart  — the previous effort was in a 2-1 loss away to Norwich.
Keeper Andy Lonergan, 37, was playing his first competitive game since appearing for Rochdale in League One in March 2019 and he made some decent saves. But there was not a lot he could do about Bale’s opener.
Winks expertly lifted the ball over the home defence and Bale, with his back  to goal, turned and guided his header into the corner.

Dele Alli was handed a rare startCredit: Getty Images – Getty

There was no night off for Harry KaneCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Making his first start for a month, Dele had a couple of good chances, and Stoke resorted to some cynical challenges on the midfielder
But he blotted his copy book by losing possession, Stoke attacked and Jacob Brown crossed for Jordan Thompson to score at the far post.
Spurs’ second goal  came from Ben Davies, who seized on a  clearance by taking one touch before striking it sweetly from 25 yards. Son Heung-min had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside, which would have been allowed had there been VAR.
Harry Kane sealed the win with a  finish into the roof of the net — and Spurs were through.
For Mourinho, he can smell yet another trophy. And in this situation, we all know what happens next.
Considering his record in the League Cup, it would actually be more surprising if he failed to win it.
