AI robots set to replace Prem managers as tactics from artificial intelligence is almost always better, new study says

I had to Google my own managers… Bournemouth players would have done the same – they’ll appoint British boss next

WHENEVER a Premier League club is in deep trouble, you can bet the owners will go for a British manager. But if they’re hiring when things are going well, they will tend to opt for a foreign coach.

The Cherries hired Andoni Iraola as his replacementCredit: Getty
A bit of success and they become fascinated by, and fixated on, the idea of a ‘project’, a ‘new philosophy’, a five-year plan and all that.
Not that five-year plans are realistic in modern football. Five defeats in a row and a manager is usually toast.
Take Bournemouth and the way they appointed Gary O’Neil, only to sack him after he’d done an excellent job in keeping them in the Premier League, and then gave the job to Andoni Iraola.
If the Cherries are beaten by Vincent Kompany’s Burnley today, and Iraola is left with three points from 10 games, they will probably get rid of him and go British again.
    READ MORE IN SPORT
It will have been a very tough week for Iraola after his side were beaten at home by O’Neil’s Wolves last Saturday.
His players will have spoken to O’Neil after that match, they will have been impressed with the job he is doing at Wolves, some of them may even be wondering if they might get a move to Molineux in January.
Those players would have been shocked at O’Neil’s sacking, so Iraola would have always been on to a hiding in trying to convince them he was the right man for the job.
It’s a funny club, Bournemouth — they do very well at playing the ‘we’re a small club’ underdog card, considering that they pay massive wages and spent more than £100million in transfer fees alone this summer.

They usually play some nice football. But you always get the impression that their better players are passing through and looking to move on somewhere bigger and better.
O’Neil was appointed caretaker manager under their old Russian ownership, after Scott Parker had been sacked for saying the club were basically done and dusted, not good enough for the Premier League, following a 9-0 hiding at Liverpool early last season.
But then the new American owner Bill Foley appointed O’Neil full-time, saw him keep them up with something to spare, then sent him packing at the end of the season.
Iraola did a decent job at Rayo Vallecano in Spain’s LaLiga but I’d have been surprised if many — or any — Bournemouth players had heard of him before he was announced as their new boss in the summer.
You’d have to be a serious student of the game to sit in and watch Vallecano on a Sunday night.
The players would have been Googling him and if they had any mates who had played in Spain, they’d have been messaging to find out what the bloke is like. Football is a small world.

I’ve done that before and heard that an incoming manager was going to make our lives hell in pre-season, to run us all into the ground, only to find the new boss had the balls out on the first day and everything was sweetness and light — so the info you get isn’t always accurate.
At Watford, I had to Google a lot of my new managers.

Walter Mazzarri was also unknown to Deeney when he joined WatfordCredit: PA:Press Association
I’d never heard of Slavisa Jokanovic and did an internet search to find out that he’d actually played for Chelsea.
We ended up winning promotion under him.
I must admit I’d never heard of Walter Mazzarri when he arrived at Watford and was quite impressed with his CV — that he’d managed Napoli and Inter Milan. But that one didn’t go well.
The point is that those Bournemouth players wouldn’t have had a clue what to expect from Iraola.
They won’t care too much about his past, they will just want to know what he would do for them, to make their club better.
Players don’t like change. Which may sound strange in an ever-changing world like football is.
They would have given Iraola the pre-season to prove himself. If a new manager is appointed in mid-season, he might only have a fortnight to get the players on board.
They will want a manager who makes training different and interesting — and they will want to know that those methods translate to results at the weekend.
Whatever Iraola has been working on, results have not been good enough and Bournemouth looked pretty shambolic against Wolves.
The owners will look stupid if they sack Iraola so soon but this match against Burnley looks like a must-win for the Spaniard.
And what if Bournemouth do make a managerial change?
Perhaps go for a British manager, who may want to shore things up?

That will be another £70m in January.
And all for the idea of a ‘project’ with a ‘philosophy’. More

I played with a Real Madrid cult hero who dated a porn star – we asked for pictures but he told us ‘just Google her’

FORMER Celtic star Paul Caddis has revealed the stunning way Thomas Gravesen revealed the identity of his girlfriend to team-mates. Gravesen, 47, joined the Bhoys in 2006 after completing a transfer from Real Madrid.

And while in Scotland he used an interesting way to tell his team-mates about his then-girlfriend, porn star Kira Eggers.
Speaking to the Under The Cosh podcast, Caddis revealed the Danish hardman would tell anyone who asked about his girlfriend to use Google to find her.
When asked whether Gravesen ever had a girlfriend while at Celtic, Caddis said: “No, she would stay in Denmark or something, his missus was a porn star wasn’t she?
“We used to say to him, Tommy, you got any pictures of your missus? ‘Just Google her lad, loads on Google’.”

Caddis played alongside Gravensen at opposite ends of their careers.
Gravesen had been on the south side of Hadrian’s Wall for almost five years with Everton, starring 167 times during his time at Goodison Park before joining Madrid in January 2005.
He retired at the age of 33 in 2008, with Caddis himself leaving Celtic in 2010 after coming through the Hoops academy.
Following retirement, however, Gravesen lived a life far divorced from his days as a footballer.

And since then he has gone on to amass a £100million fortune thanks to savvy investments and poker.
One-cap Scotland international Caddis also revealed how Gravesen would spend his time in the off-season.
He added: “He used to go back in pre-season and stay at either his mum’s or his dad’s (house) in an attic probably about the f***ing size of this full table.
“In this little attic, a tiny room for six weeks, just used to sit on his PlayStation.
“He was like number one or number two for COD (Call of Duty) at one point.
“Honestly! He was f***ing mental, but what a brilliant guy.” More

Google ‘predicts’ Qatar World Cup final teams – and it’s heartbreak for Gareth Southgate’s England

GOOGLE have predicted the finalists for this year’s Qatar World Cup final… and England aren’t in it.After an awful run of results, the nation was already doubting England’s chance of success at reaching the Lusail Stadium showpiece on December 18.

And now search engine giants Google have confirmed everyone’s worst fears by revealing Gareth Southgate’s men will fall before the final.
Argentine outlet AS found out that if a user searched for ‘events Lusail stadium’ on Google, they were met with all the fixtures being played at that ground during the tournament.
While the six group games, round of 16, quarter and semi was as expected, the final showed ‘Brazil v France’.
Whether it was a mistake or a premonition remains to be seen – but it seems Google is predicting a clash between the Samba Boys and Les Bleus.

Hours later, Google corrected the error and ‘TBC v TBC’ now shows.
The Google prediction came shortly before the Three Lions produced a rousing Wembley comeback against Germany in their last game before heading to Qatar.
For 70 minutes, Southgate’s side meandered towards a drab, uninspiring defeat in their final match before jetting out to the Middle East in under two months.
But with England trailing 2-0, things got a little bonkers.

Over the next 20 minutes, Southgate’s men produced a stunning fightback through goals from Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane.
Unfortunately, Nick Pope’s flap allowed Kai Havertz to equalise in the 87th minute.
But despite the result, the rousing comeback has injected some much needed optimism back into England fans with the World Cup just around the corner. More

Man Utd star ‘had to GOOGLE who Ralf Rangnick was when he became boss after not knowing who ex-RB Leipzig chief was’

A MANCHESTER United player allegedly had to GOOGLE who Ralf Rangnick was when he was named as the club’s new boss. The 63-year-old replaced former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November after the Norwegian was given the boot.

But Rangnick was not the high-profile name that many at Old Trafford hoped would be given the role – with both Zinedine Zidane and current Tottenham boss Antonio Conte heavily linked with the job.
And it’s been claimed that at-least one bewildered United star had to resort to the popular search engine Google to find out who the incoming German was, according to ESPN reporter Mark Ogden.
Ogden also claims that there may have been more United players who flocked to Google to check out Rangnick’s credentials – but wasn’t able to confirm if this was the case.
The Red Devils have been out of sorts recently – and the members of the team not recognising Rangnick’s credentials could play a part in their poor form, Ogden alleges.
This sentiment was echoed by ex-Arsenal winger Perry Groves who thinks that United’s current crop have no faith in the ex-Hoffenheim boss.

“You can tell that they’re not convinced by him. They’re not actually putting the effort in they should be.”
Red Devils legend Paul Ince carried on the onslaught by claiming that his former side haven’t made any progress with the German at the helm.
It’s not the first time Rangnick’s credentials have come under scrutiny.
He was being touted as AC Milan’s next boss last year which led to Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic ruthlessly admitting that he didn’t even know who the 63-year-old was when asked by Italian media.
Rangnick was also dismissed as the ‘biggest fraud in Russian history’ by the country’s media when he left Lokomotiv Moscow to take over at Old Trafford.
But despite being relatively unknown by players and critics, Rangnick’s got some heavy hitters in his corner in the form of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel who were both inspired by the former Schalke boss. More

Man City brutally trolled as rivals hack Google Maps and link ’empty seats’ to ‘Etihad Stadium’ after Guardiola’s plea

MANCHESTER CITY fans were trolled last night – but this time not by their manager Pep Guardiola.Rivals fans cheekily hacked Google Maps to show City’s stadium completely deserted when users search ’empty seats’ in the web mapping platform.

Pep Guardiola has called on City fans to get to games
Dozens shared pictures of the glitch on Twitter, poking fun at the champions, just a few days after Guardiola said his club needed more fans.
One said: “If you type empty seats into Google Maps it genuinely comes up with the Etihad. City are getting trolled by Google.”
Another laughed: “I just typed in ’empty seats’ on Google maps and I can’t believe I haven’t noticed sooner.”
It comes after it was reported that only 30,959 City fans attended Tuesday night’s 6-1 win against Wycombe, despite tickets only costing just £12.50.
Guardiola was embroiled in a row with the club’s supporters for calling on them to attend the clash with Southampton on Saturday.
Just 38,062 fans watched City’s 6-3 win over RB Leipzig last Wednesday at the 55,000-seater stadium.

The Spaniard said: “The last three games we’ve played here we’ve scored 16 goals.
“I would like more people to come to the next game on Saturday. We need the people, please, because we will be tired.
“I know the team from Ralph [Hasenhuttl] is quite similar, the way they play. They’re so dangerous and it’s a really important game.
“So I invite all our people to come next Saturday at 3pm to watch.”
Guardiola’s comments were blasted for being insensitive by Kevin Parker, the general secretary of City’s official supporters’ club.

Parker said Guardiola should ‘stick’ to coaching as he ‘doesn’t understand the difficulties’ supporters face.
But he refused to apologise, insisting his remarks were misunderstood by fans.
They arguably had some effect too, with a near-capacity 53,000 turning out for the Saints draw.
Guardiola added: “I am not going to apologise for what I said. What I said was we need the support.
“It doesn’t matter how many people come but I invite them to come and enjoy the game because we need the support.
