Brazilian FA explain decision not to give out ‘gay’ No24 shirt in Copa America after judge demands answers

THE BRAZILIAN FA have explained why none of their players were issued with the No24 shirt for the Copa America amid homophobia claims. The number is associated with homosexuality in Brazil and a judge demanded to know why none of their players were assigned it for the tournament.

Brazil are the only one of the 10 Copa America teams who do not have a No24.
In usual tournaments, squads are capped at 23 players and the numbers 1-23 are selected accordingly.
But to allow for any squad changes as a result of Covid-19, the squad limit was increased – Brazil have 24 players in theirs – and the shirt numbers to select from extended to 1-30.
Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz was Brazil’s extra man and he has been wearing the No25 shirt.
Manchester City keeper Ederson has No23 but there is no player between the pair with No24.
The link to homosexuality come from Brazil’s illegal street gambling game ‘Jogo do Bicho’ (The Animal Game).
With each number in the game corresponding to a different animal, the 24 was assigned to the deer (‘veado’ in Portuguese). The issue, though, is that ‘viado’ is also a common homophobic slur in Brazil.
Many Brazilian players in the past have refused to wear the number for their clubs.
Brazilian FA’s full response Here is the full transcript showing questions asked by the judge and the Brazilian FA’s response…
    1. Is the non-inclusion of number 24 in the official uniform at competitions a deliberate policy of the respondent?
    Answer : No.
    2. If not, why not include number 24 in the official uniform of the respondent?
Reply: The initial regulation of the Conmebol Copa America 2021 (“Competition”) determined that only 23 players could be entered. This number of athletes is traditionally observed in Conmebol and FIFA international competitions. The numbering used by athletes is related to sports issues only. Initially, the organization of the competition established the use of numbers 1 to 23 sequentially, which was done by the Brazilian team when registering 23 athletes. However, later on, the Competition Regulations were changed and 5 additional places were granted, due to the possibility of changing players due to possible contamination by COVID-19.
    3. Which department within the respondent is responsible for deliberating the numbers on the official team uniform?
Answer : In this case, the technical committee of the Brazilian soccer team
    4. Who are the people and employees of Interpelada who are part of this department that deliberates on the definition of numbers in the official uniform?
Answer : The person in charge of the department is the coordinator Mr. Oswaldo Giroldo Júnior (“Juninho Paulista”).
    5. Is there any guidance from FIFA or Conmebol on registering players with number 24 on their shirt?
Answer : The CBF is not aware of any guidance on the subject.

And although the game’s popularity is in decline, judge Ricardo Cyfer still demanded to know why no No24 was selected.
He asked if the decision was a deliberate one to which the Brazilian FA (CBF) replied: “No.”
And asked why the number was not used, the CBF said: “The initial regulation of the Conmebol Copa America 2021 (“Competition”) determined that only 23 players could be entered.
“This number of athletes is traditionally observed in Conmebol and FIFA international competitions.
“The numbering used by athletes is related to sports issues only.
“Initially, the organization of the competition established the use of numbers 1 to 23 sequentially, which was done by the Brazilian team when registering 23 athletes.
“However, later on, the Competition Regulations were changed and 5 additional places were granted, due to the possibility of changing players due to possible contamination by COVID-19.”

Gabriel Jesus sent off for brutal ‘karate kick’ to face leaving fans wincing in Brazil’s Copa America win over Chile

Jesus was aiming to bring down a high ball but got it completely wrong as he studded the left-back after his opponent had headed it away.
The incident took place just after half-time in Brazil’s 1-0 Copa America quarter-final win over Chile.
Substitute Lucas Paqueta scored the only goal of the game in the 46th minute before more drama at the beginning of the second half.
On 48 minutes, Jesus caught Mena heavily on the face, neck and shoulder with his flailing boot.
He immediately had his head in his hands and offered up absolutely no complaints when the referee brandished the red card.
Team-mate Neymar, who produced some neat skill to set up the winner, jumped to the defence of the Manchester City forward.
He said: “Jesus was just bad luck. He had his eye on the ball, not on the man, and unfortunately, he was sent off.”
But fans were shocked by the savage attack – reminiscent of Nigel de Jong’s on Xabi Alonso in 2010 – and vented on Twitter.

    England vs Ukraine betting special

One said: “There is no one in the right mind would argue about this isnt a straight red.”
Another wrote: “Ninja kicks, while awesome, aren’t allowed in football.”
A third added: “This should be more then a single match ban, this was beyond reckless.”
One user commented: “Somebody tell Jesus he’s not the karate kid.”
And hardman Arturo Vidal hit out at the ‘clown’ referee for his handling of the match in Rio de Janeiro – despite penalising Brazil for 13 fouls compared to 12 for the Inter star’s Chile.
The midfielder raged: “Were very sad, we deserved a lot more.

“In a game like this, you need a referee who wears the trousers, who is fair and who doesn’t want to be the match clown.
“We just lacked that goal. If there’s a referee that won’t let you play, that stops the game all the time, and he thinks he is the star of the show, then it’s very difficult.
“But we were beaten by the favourites, the team playing at home. At least we will leave with our heads held high.”

And albeit the host weren’t creating any clear-cut chances in the first half, the danger signs were most certainly there.

However things took a turn for the worst when Gabriel Jesus’ reckless challenge earned the Manchester City forward a red card moments later.
Claudio Bravo and Neymar pay respects to each other for a hard fought game
The Chileans applied pressure the entire second half and it seemed as if the equaliser came when they had the ball in the back of the net but thankfully for Tite and his team, VAR ruled it out for offside.
Brazil were able to hold on in the end and now they can look ahead to Tuesday’s semi-final clash against Peru.

    That was delightful.
    BRAZIL 1-0 CHILE

Peru are through to the semi-finals of Copa America 2021
    FULL TIME REPORT
PERU’s fairy tale story goes on as they conquer Paraguay in Brazil and progress to the semi-finals of Copa America.
    Wow where to even start?
Paraguay were the favourites to qualify for the next round and once Gustavo Gomez had given them the lead only 11 minutes in, it seemed as if they were going to run riot.
Gabriel Avalos and Luis Iberico battling it out
However Peru refused to give up the battle and two goals either side of the half-way point in the first half from man of the match Gianluca Lapadula, flipped the game on its head.
    Peruvian players celebrating
Then things went from bad to worse for the Paraguayan’s because the goal scorer and skipper, Gomez, was sent off for something very harsh.
But La Albirroja still kept the faith and it paid off because second in command Junior Alonso levelled up the scoring with a tidy finish at the back-post almost ten minutes after the interval.
All of a sudden, Paraguay were playing as if they had the one-man advantage by creating a lot of clear cut chances but unfortunately squandering the opportunities.
And they were made to pay for their mistakes when Yoshimar Yotun popped up with a goal on the 80th minute.
The drama wasn’t done yet though because Peruvian talisman Andre Carrillo stupidly got himself sent off five minutes later which put the wind in Paraguay’s sails.
Andre Carrillo distraught after being sent off
And after throwing the kitchen sink at the Peru back-line, Gabriel Avalos scored in injury time to take the game to penalties.
Unfortunately for La Albirroja, all of that hard work came in vein because they lost 4-3 in the penalty shootout after a rather poor display of penalties from both sides.
    MOTM
Congratulations to Gianluca Lapadula for winning man of the match thanks to his brace against Paraguay.

    FULL 90 STATS
Peru dominated possession but other than that, it was quite an even contest despite Paraguay having ten men.
