When and where are the Commonwealth Games?
The iconic summer event will take place from TONIGHT – Thursday, July 28 with the opening ceremony scheduled to get underway at 7pm UK time.
And the Commonwealth Games is expected to conclude on Monday, August 8.
Birmingham, England is where the huge tournament will be hosted and there will 15 different venues depending on the event.
However, the 11-day competition’s main venue will be the Alexander Stadium which is also where the opening and closing ceremonies will be.

THE Commonwealth Games returns to England for the first time in 20 years today – and it promises to be a blockbuster festival of sport. More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations will descend on Birmingham aiming to win 283 medal events across 19 sports in 11 jam-packed days.

That includes the famous lawn bowls, or summer curling for you Winter Olympic fans, and three new sports making their debut at the Games – women’s T20 cricket, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, there are more medal events for women (136) than for men (134) with 13 for mixed events.
Remember, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete separately here, so Team GB Olympic team-mates could be pitted against each other in the pursuit for gold medals.
And with the creator of Peaky Blinders playing a crucial role, excitement is reaching fever pitch as the action gets underway.

The main venue of the 15 in use is the Alexander Stadium, which plays host to this evening’s opening ceremony – and the closing one on August 8.
The last time England staged the Games was back in Manchester in 2002 with Melbourne, Delhi, Glasgow and the Gold Coast hosting the last four.
What can I expect from the opening ceremony?
Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight is the brains behind the opening ceremony which will include a 1,000-strong choir and the final leg of the 72-nation Queen’s Baton Relay.
Brummie band UB40 are providing the backing track for this year’s Commonwealths alongside rappers Gilly G and Dapz On The Map.
There is no Queen Elizabeth II to open the Games this time around so we will have to settle for Prince Charles instead.

Who are the main British stars to watch?
Five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny is arguable the biggest name in the entire Games, let alone for the England team.
She is joined by fellow cycling legends Mark Cavendish and Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, but they will be representing the Isle of Man and Wales respectively.
Adam Peaty, the 100m breaststroke king, is battling back from a broken foot but hopes to retain his title while diver Jack Laugher will also be at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre aiming to add to his five Commonwealth golds.
Max Whitlock is competing for England in the gymnastics while defending champ Katarina Johnson-Thompson is up in the heptathlon just weeks after the World Championships in Oregon.

Laura Muir and Jake Wightman will be going for gold in the middle distances for Scotland after their medals in America this month.
Sprint queen Dina Asher-Smith pulled out through a hamstring injury while there is also no Tom Daley or Jonny Brownlee.
And there is no Northern Irish sprinter Leon Reid who won bronze in the Gold Coast either after he was banned following a security risk assessment.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah could be involved, which would be a major boost for the organisers, fans and viewers alike – just not for their rivals.
And Chad le Clos knows a top-three finish in the 50m butterfly will draw him level on a record-equalling 18 Commonwealth Games medals – although he has only just recovered from bronchitis which ruled him out of the world championships last month.

But last Saturday night, she dramatically pulled up while running the third leg of the 4x100m relay final with British team-mates.
Medical scans in the UK have shown damage to her left hamstring and it means she cannot compete in front of a home crowd next week.
Asher-Smith, who was down to run the 100m and 4x100m relay at the Alexander Stadium, faces a race against time to be ready for the European Championships in Munich in August.
The issue has denied her the chance to win a hat-trick of medals at three major track-and-field championships this summer.

And the Commonwealth Games is eexpected to conclude on Saturday, August 8.
Birmingham, England is where the huge tournament will be hosted and there will 15 different venues depending on the event.

GUTTED Holly Bradshaw was left in tears after crashing out of the World Athletics Championships with a SNAPPED pole.The Olympic bronze medal-winning pole vaulter injured herself mid-jump during the warm-up for qualification on day one of the event in Eugene.

The 30-year-old landed on the back of her neck and slid down the crash mat when her equipment unexpectedly spilt in two in a “freak” occurrence.
Bradshaw required medical attention backstage and decided not to jump in competition for fear of sustaining a serious injury – one that could have ruled her out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

THERE can be no more diverse character in the entire England team at next month’s Commonwealth Games than a man called Delicious.Delicious Orie, a 6ft 6in, 16 stone-plus super-heavyweight will be one of the boxing squad’s gold-medal favourites.

And there can be no greater role model than Orie, 25, for every immigrant kid in this country trying to integrate and overcome adversity.
Delicious certainly comes from a technicolour background. He was born in Moscow, his father Justin is Nigerian and his mother Natalie is Russian. The family suffered obscene and sometimes violent racism on a daily basis.
After Justin was assaulted on public transport, he uprooted his family from Russia and came to Britain, settling in Wolverhampton.
Delicious said: “I was only seven when I came here and because I couldn’t speak a word of English it caused me some cultural problems.

It didn’t take young Orie long to overcome his problems and thrive in his new environment. He won a place at Aston University and graduated with a 1st Class Honours Economics degree.
In his early teens his sport was basketball and he had no interest in boxing until he saw Anthony Joshua on TV knockout Charles Martin to win the IBF world heavyweight title.
Delicious told me: “From that moment AJ became my idol and I was hooked. I went and joined the Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in Birmingham and found out I was a pretty good boxer.

Ortie said: “I want to box for Britain at the Paris Olympics in two years. I will be 27 which is still young for a heavyweight. Because I started so late, what I lack is experience.
“The way I look at it is by the time I think I’ll be good enough to turn pro AJ, Fury and Usyk will be retired.
“And if boxing doesn’t work out I have my degree to fall back on and I can go into a business career.”
Maguire, who has coached many promising youngsters, predicts: “With hard work and the right breaks Delicious can achieve everything AJ has and I think probably surpass that as well.”
The one dark cloud in Orie’s life is the war in Ukraine. He revealed: “I have family in Russia and Ukraine and I find this horrible war soul-destroying.”

Gymnast Courtney Tulloch, para-swimmer Alice Tai and basketball player Dominique Allen have gone out of their comfort zone in recent months.
The trio are set to be important members of Team England at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, which start on July 28, 2022.
Tulloch, 24, said: “Gymnastics is a really difficult, if not virtually impossible, sport to replicate without access to all my usual equipment.
“In an odd way, I’ve kind of enjoyed the challenge of finding new ways to train.
“I’ve used my body more than ever and used household objects, or natural elements like trees in the park and outdoor spaces, to work on my strength and conditioning.
“It’s a relief the restrictions are starting to lift though because I have missed my Team England teammates.

“We have all kept in touch via social media to spur each other on but I can’t wait until we all meet up as we get ready for the Commonwealths.
“Team England includes athletes from all over the country, from all backgrounds and is the most representative team of England as it is today.”
Tai, 21, said: “As athletes we have all had to adapt.
“I haven’t been able to swim in a pool for a period of time so have done lots of land-based training at home and have even ventured out to the sea on the South Coast.
“Despite the sunshine, it was still a shock to the system to get into the water and very different from my normal training environment.”

Allen was one of 12 players that represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games
Allen, 30, who is from Wordsley, said: “The city is buzzing that the Commonwealth Games are coming to town.
“I’ve no doubt we’ll create a whole host of new golden moments in Birmingham in two years’ time.
“This is a city and region that loves sport and the Birmingham fans will make the Games one of the best ever, especially for the English athletes competing in front of a home crowd.”
