His effort sealed a 1-0 win over Lionel Messi and co at Old Trafford before United went on to edge Chelsea in a penalty shootout in Moscow to lift the trophy.

Despite being hearled for his pivotal strike that led to Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides reaching the final, Scholes admitted he miskicked the ball.

The former England International capitalised on Gianluca Zambrotta’s loose pass by smashing the ball from 25 yards past Victor Valdes.

But speaking on the Official Manchester United Podcast, Scholes said: “I miskicked it, personally. I sliced it off my foot.”

The 45-year-old ultimately started and earned redemption against Chelsea after he was suspended for United’s success against Bayern Munich in the 1999 final.

Marcus Rashford joined Scholes on the podcast, and the retired footballer was also full of praise for some of the spectacular goals the 22-year-old has scored.

He said: “Out of Marcus’ goals I loved his West Ham goal, his Liverpool goal and his Chelsea goal.

“I just loved the West Ham goal, I know it’s not the most important one but the bit of skill and to bend it in the top corner like that, I think it was brilliant.”

The two later revealed they’d have loved the chance to have combined together on the pitch.

Rashford was enjoying his best goalscoring campaign with 19, until it was brought to a halt by a back injury in January.

He will now be fit for when the season resumes after the coronavirus lockdown.
