Man Utd ‘make James Maddison and Jack Grealish top transfer priorities’ as Solskjaer searches for more creativity

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly made creative pair James Maddison and Jack Grealish their top transfer targets.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his side are lacking in midfield options as they deal with injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.

After the Reds’ 2-0 loss at Arsenal, Solskjaer confirmed he will look for replacements in the January window.

He said: “Of course it is playing on our decision making when we have two players out – Paul for a month and Scott for two,” Solskjaer said after the defeat at the Emirates.

“That will give us less options and we have loads of games and important games, but still it has to be right and that is the big point.

“If it’s available and if it’s possible we will do something, definitely. We are looking at one or two.”

According to the Independent, Old Trafford bosses have scrapped plans to wait until the summer to strengthen their squad.

And England duo Maddison and Grealish have emerged as “top choices” in the winter window.

It is claimed United could also look to Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen, who has turned down several attempts to extend his contract.

The Dane is free to speak with foreign sides over a summer move when his Spurs deal is up, but the London club are pushing to sell him this month and avoid being left empty handed.

Maddison has long been linked with an Old Trafford switch, with the Leicester playmaker thought to cost around £80m.

Aston Villa skipper Grealish is the more versatile option as he can be played in an advanced midfield role or out wide.

But Villa boss Dean Smith told United and any other potential suitors that his captain is not for sale.

Smith said: “I’ve seen speculation in the press with pundits linking him with other clubs, what they don’t realise, I’ve worked with this kid for 14 months, he tells the story himself of jumping into a bush in the garden at six years old pretending it was the Holte End.

“He’s Villa through and through, he’s now performing on the biggest stage he can in the Premier League for Aston Villa.

“He signed a new deal at the start of last season, we’ve got two very wealthy owners who want to build the team around Jack.

“They can keep linking him, but this is the one club he loves and that’s probably the most important thing.”
