Erik ten Hag reveals ‘admiration’ for David Moyes as Man Utd boss call his West Ham rival ‘brave’ for replacing Fergie

ERIK TEN HAG has always loved a challenge — and they do not come much bigger than when Manchester United gave him a call 12 months ago. When United decided he was the man to drag them off their knees, Ten Hag was leading Ajax to a third successive title and one of the hottest managers in Europe.

The glamour of Old Trafford was always going to trump Amsterdam but bossing England’s biggest club meant a more glaring spotlight than at any other Premier League side.
Yet replacing Ralf Rangnick was one thing — tonight Ten Hag faces the man who had the most thankless job of all in stepping into Sir Alex Ferguson’s boots ten years ago.
United take on a West Ham side managed by David Moyes, the man Fergie helped pick as his replacement but who was sacked after just ten tortuous months.
Ten Hag had one year’s experience at the time — a title-winning campaign with Go Ahead Eagles — when Moyes arrived at Old Trafford in 2013.

Even a managerial rookie as he was then knew what a mission impossible the Scot had taken on.
Whether Dutchman Ten Hag, 53, would have done the same is, as he pointed out, hypothetical.
But it is one of the reasons why he has huge respect for 60-year-old Moyes.
Ten Hag admitted: “It is quite clear that when you have to succeed Sir Alex, it is a really difficult job to do.

“He did it and had the bravery to do it — that is why I admire him. He has also spent so long in the job with many Premier League clubs.
“So he is a great manager with a lot of skills. We have to play our maximum if we want to get the result we need.”
After the drama of Thursday’s last-kick penalty loss at Brighton, that result is a win — to help seal a top-four finish which looked nailed down yet is suddenly far from it.
With the Hammers still chasing points to secure safety, as well as a Europa Conference final, Ten Hag knows there can be no lack of focus.
For all he is turning United into a force again — the EFL Cup is won and an FA Cup final awaits — there have still been way too many wobbles.
In six away games against the Prem’s top dogs, they have managed only one point and were hanging on for that after coughing up a two-goal lead at Tottenham.
Ten Hag added: “We have to keep our heads clear but also I demand passion from my players.
“But I am telling the players that if you want to be in four competitions, you need so much energy and a good game plan.
“You can’t do it at 99 per cent, it has to be 100 and for 95 minutes. We like it but it costs energy. That’s our job and Sunday we go again.”
No one is more determined to go again than Luke Shaw, whose rush-of-blood handball handed Brighton their spot-kick.
Shaw has been United’s most consistent performer, switching from left-back to central defence and has told his team-mates they will be stepping into the lion’s den this afternoon.
He said: “We know how good their crowd is and they will be fired up, they’ll get their team fired up and we must be ready.
“They are a really good team and have good momentum. We have to play the game, not the occasion.

“What’s even more disappointing is we were so comfortable but have been dragged back into a fight we didn’t want to be in, so we must refocus.”

Manager who Tottenham turned down throws hat in the ring for West Ham job if club sack David Moyes

PAULO FONSECA remains interested in the West Ham job should David Moyes depart. The Hammers have identified the Portuguese coach – who is currently at Ligue 1 club Lille – as a potential replacement.

Moyes, 60, recently revealed he is already planning for next season – but there are question marks over his long-term future after a poor Premier League campaign.
And SunSport understands that Fonseca, 50, is keeping an eye on the situation in East London from afar.
It is also understood that Fonseca is open to leaving Lille this summer should he not receive assurances over available transfer funds, despite being under contract until 2024.
Jobless pair Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers, as well as Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, have also been linked.
    Read More Football
Fonseca came close joining West Ham in 2018 at the end of Moyes’ first spell, meeting with owner David Sullivan, only for Manuel Pellegrini to take over for a brief stint.
Since then, he has managed Roma and then Lille, taking the latter from 10th to fifth this season – yet they are still 10 points off a Champions League spot with five games left.
Fonseca is known for his attacking style of play, one which almost saw him land the Tottenham job in 2021 only for negotiations to break down late on.
The message from inside West Ham is that Moyes is expected to be in charge next season – yet this is largely dependent on results in their final four games.

Despite spending £160m last summer, relegation is still on the cards after Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City, sitting in 15th just four points above the bottom three.
The run-in is a tricky one, welcoming Manchester United to the London Stadium on Sunday before a trip to Brentford followed by two defining clashes against 17th-placed Leeds and 16th-placed Leicester.
West Ham are also tipped to reach the Europa Conference League final with this month’s semi-final versus AZ Alkmaar considered a favourable one.
Lifting the club’s first piece of silverware since 1980 – and securing European football for a third successive year – could buy Moyes more time.
However, fans are wary that Moyes would then be entrusted with yet another squad rebuild, especially given the fact skipper Declan Rice is likely to leave for a hefty fee. More

Sam Allardyce set for shock Premier League return as he’s ‘in the frame to replace Javi Gracia at Leeds’

SAM Allardyce is a shock candidate to take over at Leeds if the relegation strugglers sack Javi Gracia. The club, outside of the drop zone only on goal difference, held crisis talks yesterday over the future of Javi Gracia.

Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Bournemouth was greeted by a furious fan backlash and means the Spaniard has won just three of his 11 matches since replacing Jesse Marsch.
And it’s led the club to consider relegation specialist Allardyce, 68, who has been out of management for two years after last working at West Brom.
The Athletic report that the former England manager is being ‘strongly considered’ for the job to try to keep Leeds in the top flight.
The former England boss has worked for several Premier League clubs over an illustrious career, including Bolton and West Ham, and has a reputation for swooping in to save clubs from the drop.

Although his last rescue attempt, when he arrived at West Brom midway through the 2020-21 season saw the club relegated to the Championship.
With the Whites in the relegation mire, ex-midfielder Lee Bowyer also emerged as a shock candidate to become their third manager this season.
Below, Sun Sport takes a look at where it’s gone wrong at Elland Road:
    BOARDROOM
Owner Andrea Radrizzani has barely got a thing right since shooting Bambi — and that includes his pre- season prediction that another relegation scrap would be “impossible”.
    Most read in Football
If you are going to sack God-like Marcelo Bielsa, you had better have a good plan in place. But it has been a disaster, with American Jesse Marsch hired and fired before Javi Gracia was brought in.
Supporters are  raging at the torching of Bielsa’s legacy.
    FAN CONNECTION
The players were made to pick up litter under Bielsa to show appreciation to supporters.
Now the majority cannot even be  bothered to acknowledge kids trying to catch a glimpse of their heroes.
Heads down, earphones on and hiding behind their phones, most went out of their way to ignore fans when leaving the team hotel before the 4-1 rout. The connection  has gone.
    RECRUITMENT
Director of football Victor Orta has wasted the Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha money.
They have spent £135million this season  and it is hard to make a case for a success story, other than the injured Tyler Adams.
Crocked winger Luis Sinisterra is inconsistent, while Max Wober and Willy Gnonto have shown flashes. But a record £35m deal on unproven kid Georginio Rutter in January when desperate for goals . . . really?
Marc Roca and Weston McKennie are a terrible midfield pairing and then you have got Red Bull flops Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen.
Not one of them had any Prem experience — and it shows.
    JAVI GRACIA
It is hardly a shock  it has not worked out for the manager nobody really wanted.
Leeds butchered the search for a new boss after sacking Marsch in February, eventually landing on fifth-choice Gracia.
The Spaniard started well but has been a rabbit in  headlights since the walls started caving in.
Leeds have let in a league-high 28 goals in  11 games since he took over, while tactics and selections have baffled.

    ILLAN MESLIER
The young keeper looks shot and has to be dropped if Leeds are to stand any chance of staying up.
Meslier, 23, was woeful again on Sunday, adding another two howlers to his rapidly growing reel. He is in alarming decline and worse than when he started.

As fans left the ground, a member of the West Ham faithful was tripped up by a police horse and fell to the floor.
Social media saw the funny side of the collision with many joking that the supporter dived.
One said: “I think he went down way too easily and looked like he was simulating and looking for it, yellow for the fan.”
Another responded: “Waited for the contact. Went down as soon as he felt it.”

More reacted: “Straight red and last man from the horse, clearly see it had no intention of playing ball.”
One eagle-eyed supporter even noticed another West Ham fan pointing to the guy on the ground and joked that the referee had given a penalty.
During the match, there was controversy on the pitch when Palace were awarded a soft penalty after Nayef Aguerd made contact with Eberechi Eze in the box.
It led to one Hammer claiming that the attacking midfielder made a bigger meal of his fall than the supporter.

Fans joke Roy Hodgson ‘will be playing for Chelsea next week’ after wayward touch during West Ham win

Hodgson, 75, tried to cushion the ball down, but instead, it bounced off his shin and back on to the pitch.
But the veteran manager saw the funny side as he had a little chuckle at his own expense.
And Palace fans that spotted the moment were all left joking about the manager’s ability on the ball.
One fan quipped: “He’s playing centre-forward for Chelsea next week!”

A second wrote: “So David De Gea has the same technical ability as Hodgson?”

And another tweeted: “Can’t stop watching this. Love Roy so much.”
Luckily for Palace, the players were much better than their manager on the pitch as they won the thrilling game at Selhurst Park after a delayed start.
Despite going behind to an early goal from Tomas Soucek, the hosts flew into the lead after netting three goals in 15 minutes.
Michail Antonio did grab another for the Hammers before half time.
But Eberechi Eze converted from a controversial penalty to restore Palace’s two-goal advantage.
Nayef Aguerd got the visitors back in the game, but they could not find an equaliser before full time.
The win has pretty much secured Palace’s spot in the Premier League for next season, while West Ham will still be looking over their shoulders having lost their last two games. More

Arsenal ‘target Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze but face competition from FIVE clubs including Real Madrid & Liverpool’

Chukwueze has enjoyed a brilliant season for the Yellow Submarine, notching 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
The 22-year-old winger was the star man when Villarreal beat Real Madrid earlier this month in a game that was overshadowed by Federico Valverde’s spat with Alex Baena.
Chukwueze scored twice at the Bernabeu to underline his potential.
Defensa Central report Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid are all keen to swoop for the star.

But other Premier League clubs including Everton, West Ham and Aston Villa are also believed to be in the hunt.
A potential stumbling block for any of the clubs is Chukwueze’s contract, which includes a release clause of £88m.
But his deal expires in the summer of 2024 so Villarreal will be under pressure to sell or face losing him for free this summer.
Chukwueze joined the Spanish club in 2017 after learning his trade at Nigeria’s Diamond Academy.

The keeper, now 31, has gone on to enjoy a really solid career.
While he never made it into the Arsenal first team, he spent time at non-league Harrow Borough before getting a move to EFL side AFC Wimbledon in 2014.
Three years later he joined Luton, where he remains to this day, with the Hatters aiming for promotion to the Premier League.

    Thomas Cruise
Thomas Cruise retired in 2016 after three years with Torquay United.
The former footballer, now 32, began a new and quieter life as an accountant after the ups and downs of the beautiful game.
He only made one senior appearance for Arsenal but it was a memorable one.
The left-back played all 90 minutes against Olympiakos in a 2009 Champions League group game only months after the Youth Cup triumph.
    Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley is a name that should be familiar to most football fans who regularly watch the EFL.
The defender, 31, has been out and about since leaving Arsenal in 2012.
He enjoyed a six year spell at Swansea which included multiple loan spells before settling with West Brom in 2018.
Bartley has made 51 appearances in the Premier League.

    Emmanuel Frimpong
There were high expectations for the now retired Ghanaian Emmanuel Frimpong.
But ultimately the midfielder, now 31, would only make six appearances for Arsenal and failed to set the world alight in loan spells at Wolves, Charlton and Fulham.
Frimpong would make brief stints in Russia, Sweden and Cyprus before calling it a day in 2019 due to persistent knee issues.
    Luke Ayling
It did not work out at the Emirates but Luke Ayling has enjoyed a brilliant career.
The defender, now 31, made 185 appearances for Yeovil over four years before a two-year stay in Bristol City.

Henri Lansbury is best remembered by Arsenal for scoring against rivals Tottenham in the League Cup in 2010.
But he could not use that moment as a springboard to success and would only make seven other senior appearances, despite Arsene Wenger predicting the midfielder would be a “big player” for Arsenal in 2009.
He now plays alongside goalkeeper Shea at Luton Town.
    Francis Coquelin

He would go on to make 160 appearances for the North London club and was part of the squads who won the 2015 and 2017 FA Cups.
Coquelin, 31, left for Valencia and then Villarreal and he would pick up a Europa League medal when the Spanish club beat Manchester United on penalties in 2021.
    Gilles Sunu
Winger Gilles Sunu scored the opening goal of the Youth Cup Final first leg but could not make the breakthrough at Arsenal.
He would leave for France in 2011 and play for several different clubs in the region before rejoining his local side Chateauroux in 2020.
    Jack Wilshere

Fans will need little reminding of Jack Wilshere.
His boundless ability was clear even before the Youth Cup Final and he would quickly emerge as a star of Arsenal’s midfield, making 35 Premier League appearances in the 2010-11 season.
Persistent injuries unfortunately halted the star in his tracks and moves to Bournemouth and West Ham failed to re-energise his career. He announced his retirement last summer.
But Wilshere would return to Arsenal in a coaching capacity and his career will come full circle when he leads the Gunners out of the tunnel for the cup final as the U18s boss.
    Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Despite scoring in the Youth Cup Final, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas would only make one Prem appearance at Arsenal.
He then begun a journeyman career around the EFL and played for the likes of Ipswich, Bristol City and QPR.

But he would only make three appearances in the League Cup before leaving the club in 2013.
After a number of years in the lower leagues, he finished his career at Wealdstone and retired in 2020.
