Ange reveals Shakespeare icon advice – while to boo or not to boo, that is the question for Spurs fans on Poch return

TO BOO or not to boo, that is the question for Spurs fans on Monday on Mauricio Pochettino’s return – while Ange Postecoglou has been getting tips from Shakespeare icon Sir Kenneth Branagh!Poch heads back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening in charge of arch-rivals Chelsea so could well be the villain of the piece for the home supporters.

It is set to be a night of high drama – six days after current Spurs chief Postecoglou enjoyed a trip to the theatre to see Sir Kenneth play King Lear.
The Aussie revealed: “Sir Kenneth is a big Spurs fan and was kind enough to invite my wife and I to the theatre the other night.
“We don’t get too many nights away from the kids and adult time so we enjoyed it.
“I did have to swot up on King Lear. It wasn’t part of the curriculum at Prahran High (in Melbourne) where I grew up! I had to do some research.

“You always learn from life and the appreciation of seeing people excel at what they do is inspiring. You walk out of there thinking, ‘I don’t know how they do it’.
“He was good after it. I caught up with him briefly, he was very kind with his time.
“He was all over how it’s going and gave me some little bits of advice, which I’ll ignore like he’ll ignore my advice on acting!”

Canonic play King Lear tells the tragic tale of an aged ruler driven mad thanks to an almighty bust-up with his daughters over inheritance.

Lear, played by Sir Kenneth who also directs the production currently on at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End, ends up insane, penniless and ultimately, in the ground.
Asked by SunSport if he was hoping for a happier ending on Monday when his own side take to the stage against the Blues, Postecoglou replied: “There was a fair bit going on in that play, mate.
“I definitely want a better ending than Sir Kenneth had, for sure!”
Spurs have had plenty of satisfying conclusions this season, with last-gasp winners against Sheffield United and Liverpool.
They have won eight of an unbeaten ten opening league games to the campaign, which has put them top of the league.
Key to the success has been their smart recruitment which has seen the likes of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, defender Micky van de Ven and midfielder James Maddison all shine instantly.
It is in stark contrast to the slap-dash approach opponents Chelsea have taken in the transfer market in the Todd Boehly era, which has seen them splash more than a billion quid.
Pochettino himself admitted last month mistakes had been made in bringing in too many new players in the summer, giving him a tall order to make it all gel.
Asked about Spurs’ impressive hit rate so far with new signings, Postecoglou replied: “You know what they say, success has a million fathers, and failure is a bit of an orphan. So, when things go well…
“Wherever I’ve been, I’ve made sure that I have the biggest say over recruitment. I don’t do all the work but I really think it’s an important part of my function and particularly when I first go into clubs.
“When you first go into a club, there are two measures that people will always put up against you. One is the results, that tells its own tale. But as a manager, and I’ve certainly had that experience, you can’t always guarantee the results early on because you’re trying to build something and there’s going to be some ups and downs.
“The other thing you get measured on is the people you bring in. Not necessarily the ones you inherited, because people will say they weren’t his choices if they’re not working out.
“Everywhere I’ve been, the players I’ve recruited whether it was here, Celtic, Yokohama or my jobs in Australia, those first few players I’ve always put a lot of stock in that they have to be players who come in and have an impact straight away.
“Because at least if the results aren’t there, then people will say OK, there’s something building here.
“We needed a goalkeeper. I was so keen on getting Vic in after I spoke to him because I knew he would be the right type. It was the same with Van de Ven, it took a bit longer, but there was no one else.
“The beauty of it is that the club worked hard to put a list of people together but I didn’t give them three choices, I gave them one because I knew they would work.
“Madders was probably an easy one because he was already a fantastic player but I also saw that he could come in and make an impact for us straight away.”
Monday night will be the first time Postecoglou has met Pochettino, who ran Spurs close twice in the title race and took the club to the Champions League final during his tenure between 2014-19.
The Argentine risked his reputation with the Tottenham faithful when taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the summer, having won Ligue Un with Paris Saint-Germain in the interim.

Potecoglou added: “The impact he had at Southampton and at Spurs is unquestionable. He has taken on some pretty big challenges post Spurs as well which I’m all for.
“I like managers who take on big challenges so (I have) great admiration and respect for his work.” More

Football should consider drastic rule change with refs too quick to show red card with grossly-exaggerated punishments

WHEN your team is a goal behind and the opposition start to use cunning ploys to run down the clock, you will get excitable. However, when you are one-goal up and under pressure, you will smile along with your mates if your team use clever delaying tactics up to the final whistle.
Referees are brandishing red cards a lot easier with the new rule changeCredit: Getty
Unfortunately, Fifa can’t spot a minor blemish on the field of play without taking a bulldozer to it.
So in August, timewasting became a regular yellow-card incident — of which there were no fewer than six in the Women’s Super League last weekend and 11 in the Premier League a week before.
Of course, two yellow cards become a red and an immediate one-match ban.
That was what happened to England defender Alex Greenwood on Sunday.
    Read More on Football
She took a couple of seconds too long in sizing up alternatives with a free-kick, received her second yellow and got sent off.
Greenwood had taken 26 seconds to play the ball after Emily Heaslip awarded Manchester City a free-kick in the 38th minute of their key home WSL game against Chelsea.

She had already passed it as ref Heaslip strode towards her to issue her sanction — and Greenwood’s delivery was below last season’s average 34 seconds.
    Would VAR have saved her?
    Most read in Football
Even if they were allowed to review second bookings, judging by recent instances, guardians of the monitors in Stockley Park might have been nodding off at the time.
In all, Heaslip showed 11 yellows and two reds in this ONE game, which smacks of being a little over-zealous.
But I wasn’t there and, like most people, I feel referees have a highly challenging job and strong criticism is often unjust.
FIFA see them as policemen with whistles — the sustainers of law and order.

True, refs should be decisive but equally they should avoid being pedantic.
As far as I am aware, there was no gain for Greenwood in delaying her free-kick by a few seconds — and she was actually quicker than the normal.
We’ve all seen occasions where players exaggerate minor knocks — and frankly, if they are not wearing shin pads they shouldn’t complain too pitiably.
Every regular fan can point to other annoying examples of time- wasting and that was why the authorities were anxious to use the rules to give them better value for their money.
This has led to numerous 100-minute matches in the men’s and women’s game.
Last week’s Premier League fixture between Fulham and Sheffield United racked up just a few seconds short of 114 minutes.
More second yellow cards for time-wasting are being issued by refereesCredit: Rex
Fair enough. But the rights of players should be protected and refs should try not to spoil a contest by harsh punishments for trivial delays.
Maybe it is time to consider a sin-bin.
It works in rugby union in the form of a ten-minute penalty for fairly serious offences — which surely nobody would suggest of a four-second delay in taking a throw-in.
Far more infuriating are the delays for falsified injury; while players celebrate scoring by scrummaging with fans in the crowd; the age to bring on substitutes and other time-cheating on a Dr Who scale.
Worst of all are minutes waiting for head-scratching VAR experts, baffled so often by a handball or offside.

My view? Wasted time is a bore.
But the punishment should fit the crime — not grossly exceed it. More

Footballers always use this secret coded message when they want to flirt on Instagram, says stunning influencer

FOOTBALLERS use coded messages to flirt with women they fancy online, a Spanish model has claimed.Raquel Reitx, who has over 500,000 followers on Instagram, says the athletes use the same tactic when trying to speak with her and others.

Footballers will typically delete the flame emoji comment when they’re not approached for a chat, Reitx claimsCredit: https://www.instagram.com/raquelreitx/
And she assumes it is something the footy stars have agreed upon.
Reitx told El Podcast de Druni: “I reckon that in the dressing rooms they have openly agreed how to do it.
“They all do the same thing. They send a ‘fire’ emoji, but they don’t react to the story.
“They send it. If you don’t answer them, they delete it. Always the same.”

She added that she believes there are a couple of reasons for the tactic.

One would be that footballers don’t need to work too hard to get a response due to their celebrity status.
And the other is that the fire emoji can be interpreted in a number of different ways and doesn’t necessarily give away their intentions.
But Reitx says that she herself has never been with a footballer, and that she finds these attempts to chat on social media “uninteresting”.

She commented: “I have never been one to get with people from social networks.
“In fact, those who I’ve been with, I’ve met them before in person than on networks.
“I’m not good at it. In addition, it is difficult for me to answer on WhatsApp, how difficult is it going to be for me to respond to direct messages.
“I have never had anything with a footballer. They don’t attract my attention.
“Especially with these uninteresting attempts to get women to talk to them. Not for me.”

It has paved the way for him to make a dream move into boxing, where the likes of Tyson Fury, 34, and Anthony Joshua, 33, await.
But Wilder, 37, is ready to go one step further and face Ngannou, 36, in both the ring and cage.
He told Trill Boxing Talk: “I’m very interested in it. I even thought about this idea, though, I was like; all right, let’s make it a two-fight deal.
“Everybody always comes to boxing, but let’s do this: You come to my s***, I come to yours. You know what I’m saying? You feel me?

“I’ll do it up. You come to my house, I come to yours. A true tea party. I’m a true warrior.”
Fury and Ngannou have both flirted with a hybrid-rules bout, under boxing rules but in a cage with smaller 4oz gloves.
But Wilder is ready to rip up the script and become one of few boxers to enter the world of MMA.
He said: “I’m serious about that. That’s something I thought about even from the first spark of the idea. I want to do something different.

“Since everybody always be crossing between combat sports, and the MMA guys always come to boxing, of course, they ain’t got no stand-up game as far as boxing is concerned.
“So it’s always going to be favoured on the boxer’s side, because you’re in our territory. It’s just like being in the water with sharks, with a shark.”
Boxing legend James Toney was among the few to cross codes but was beaten by ex-UFC champion Randy Couture in three minutes of their 2010 fight.
Wilder briefly met Ngannou last year when he was using the UFC’s state of the art training facilities.
He revealed: “I love Francis. When I met him at the Apex in Vegas, they was talking about doing it that time.
“I’m still interested in that fight. I would love to go to Africa for that. I would love to do that in Africa.”
