Inside Eddie Hearn’s amazing life, from double-glazing salesman to managing Anthony Joshua and driving a Rolls-Royce

AS promoters go, Eddie Hearn must be the most famous and recognisable. The chairman of Matchroom Sport, which was founded by his renowned businessman dad Barry in the 1980s, is believed to be worth around £50million.
Matchroom Sports supremo Eddie Hearn has built a fierce reputation in boxing

Smart, tailored Thom Sweeney suits look the business on Hearn
Thanks to savvy moves in the boxing world, managing Anthony Joshua as a fighter and capitalising on his marketability, the 44-year-old lives a dream lifestyle.
He often travels by private jet, wears tailored Thom Sweeney suits and enjoys a jet-set life driving a £320,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith and £80,000 Range Rover.
His gift-of-the-gab began to show at 15, when he sold double-glazing in Essex for £3-an-hour.
    Failed school
While dad Barry was swelling the coffers of Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, Eddie was flunking Brentwood High School.

He failed his GCSE exams and was refused entry into sixth form, despite Hearn Sr’s pleas to give him a second chance because of his son’s sporting prowess in football and cricket.
“I grew up thinking I was a hard nut, and in Brentwood School I was,” he once said. “Anywhere else I was a pansy.”
Hearn went to the less selective Havering Sixth Form College in Romford to study A-levels in media studies, PE and business studies.
He was on a promise from his dad of £1,000 if he got a C or better in his exams. Hearn scored two C grades and one A.

    Window shopper
Hearn was already showing he was a born salesman when he was just a teenager.
He immediately put his cheeky chappie persona to good use working in telesales for a double-glazing firm in Essex.
“I worked for Weatherseal in Romford. I’d go there after college at night and do telesales,” he told The Guardian.
“It’s the worst job in the world but the best training for sales.
“For every rejection we had an answer on a list – from ‘I’ve just lost my husband,’ to ‘I’ve just done my double-glazing.’
“We always had a reason to make an appointment.”
Confident Hearn also told the Big Issue: “I was good in front of people. And I had a lot of chat. I suppose I could be a bit of a charmer if I wanted to be.”
Hearn has always been blessed with a gift-of-the-gab

    Aspiring agent to big break
When he was 18, Hearn was recruited as a sports agent for LEA.
He soon prospered, bringing in clients including Ian Botham, as well as several high-profile golf clients.
His son’s work impressed his dad, who invited Eddie on board for a subdivision called Matchroom Golf.
But it was by chance Eddie got involved in boxing.
He was sat on a poker table with former heavyweight Audley Harrison, when the Olympic gold medallist asked him for help getting a fight.
“I was playing in the World Series of Poker and happened to be drawn on the same table as Audley, who asked if he could get on a Matchroom show,” Hearn said.
“So I phoned up the old man and told him: ‘I think we can do something with Audley.’
“The phone went stone quiet. Then he said: ‘You’re on your own, I’m going nowhere near him.’”
Eddie put Harrison on Prizefighter, which he duly won.

And then he got him a European title show, in which the Londoner defeated Michael Sprott in 2010.
Incredibly, that earned Harrison a WBA title fight with David Haye.
Harrison was knocked out in the third round, but it put Hearn on the map.
“Those days are fun because it’s just you against the world,” Hearn told Square Mile.
“No one really knows who you are. You’re just this kid whose blagging it. It’s fun, then.
“Doesn’t come with the pressures and responsibilities and aggravation now. I weren’t a threat.”
    On top of the world
Today, Eddie is a huge success story – reportedly dividing his time between his Bel Air home in Los Angeles and mansion in Brentwood, Essex.
In 2018, he signed boxing’s first ever billion dollar fight deal with DAZN.
World champions includin Canelo Álvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Oleksandr Usyk, Vasyl Lomachenko and Katie Taylor have all been promoted by him.

But, his biggest, most fruitful and certainly most financially rich has come no bigger than Anthony Joshua.
Amusingly, AJ is in on the “cash cow” joke he has been referred to when it comes to his relationship with Eddie and Matchroom boxing.
When asked to comment on a photo with Hearn and Matchroom CEO Frank Smith by DAZN, the two-time unified champion jokingly called himself the pair’s “investment”.
“You’ve got two business men checking in on their investment! Just making sure that it’s running steady,” he said.
“People call me the cash cow, so they’re just checking in on their cash cow and making sure that it’s still creating that milk!”
    Family life
Away from boxing, Eddie lives a very private life.
He is married to the beautiful Chloe, who has been described as his “soulmate”.
Eddie was by her side when the businesswoman opened the doors to her Chloe’s Beauty Bar in Brentwood, alongside TOWIE alumni Chloe Sims in 2014.
The parlour featured regularly on the reality TV show, before closing it down in 2019.

However, Eddie opened up about his family life in The Times in 2019, which includes their daughters Isabella and Sophia.

Writing his own column, he penned: “I get jumped on by the kids about 6.30. It’s a lovely way to wake up — except on them days when you went to bed at 3 … Work takes me away a lot, so if I’m home, my missus expects me to do my bit.”
Speaking about Chloe and their Essex life, he added: “My missus is from west London and she used to take the mick: ‘Ooh, I’m dating an Essex boy.’ Now? She adores it here. There’s a lot of good working-class people in Essex. And you won’t find no snobbery here, neither.” More

I was an England star but quit football to launch fashion brand – now I make £35m-a-year and have an Oxford Street shop

IN 2013, unfulfilled by his football career, Reece Wabara decided to set up a clothing line as a side-project.The former Man City right-back ploughed £15,000 into fashion label Maniere De Voir, after taking on advice from school pal Lewis Morgan, who co-founded leisure wear giant Gym Shark.

“I kept asking, where can I maximise my potential to be great,” he told The Times back in 2021.
“I always had a way of dressing that was different and Lewis (Morgan, co-founder of Gymshark) said to me, ‘You should do something in fashion’.”
Some ten years later, the company is now turning over a staggering £34.7million-per-year.
It has clothed sports stars including Anthony Joshua and Raheem Sterling, while Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards is also a fan.

Better still, it has just opened its first flagship store on London’s Oxford Street – with queues forming around the block.
    Choosing a different destiny
    Football was in Reece’s blood.
His grandfather Lawrence played for Nigeria, while his uncle Mark Walters starred for Rangers and Liverpool.
At 16, he was scouted by Man City. Three years later, he was handed a £1million-per-year three-year contract.
    Most read in Football
But, he had a sense he could achieve much more.
He saved up £15,000 and launched online clothes store Maniere De Voir, inspired by a chat with his dad.
“I signed to Manchester City at a transitional period, there was two or three managers in the time I was there and two or three owners too,” Wabara said.
“I knew my football days at City were coming to an end and my dad always taught me I needed a second option to ensure you’re relevant and financially stable.
“I founded MDV in late 2013 and launched a collection, the first clothing I produced was tracksuits, T-shirts, hoodies…I put them on the footballers that I knew and it took off.”
In 2017, at the age of 26, following a spell at Bolton Wanderers, former England U20 international Wabara decided to hang up his boots and concentrate on his business.
“The transition from footballer to fashion owner was a gradual one and only when the numbers and politics in football started to eat away at me did I need to make a choice,” he told Sports On Screen.
“My football wasn’t progressing in the way I intended it to.
“The business was progressing at an alarming rate and I had to choose one or the other because focus is important.”

    Success story
Wabara, who is originally from Bromsgrove, Worcs, put his life and soul into his new project – working seven days a week.
Initial turnover was slow. So, he had to revert to a ‘Plan B’.
Noticing that the Sports Luxe market was male-dominated, he introduced womenswear to Maniere De Voir.
“Men are very simple by nature,” he said.
“There’s only so much you can do with those silhouettes.
“Whereas women are more experimental – and they shop a lot more, typically.”
    The decision paid dividends.
From his first year turnover of £1million, some seven years later he was raking in £30.2million.

In 2022, Wabara was a new entry in the Sunday Times’ Young Rich ListCredit: Instagram
Today, that number has swollen to a staggering £34.7million.
The numbers catapulted Reece into last year’s Young Rich List in the Sunday Times – with a personal fortune of £26million, above footballer Marcus Rashford and level with rapper Stormzy’s net worth.
    And there’s more…
Earlier in the year, Maniere De Voir signed a 10-year lease for the entire 5,189 sq ft retail space at 354 Oxford Street.
“We are delighted to announce Oxbourne House as our London Flagship store,” Wabara revealed.
“We strongly believe that the balance between online and physical retail space is key to growing and solidifying a brand that stands the test of time.
“We hope to weave ourselves into the fabric of the high street’s resurgence, inspiring other successful online pure plays to become a part of the iconic location which is Oxford Street.”
Already a buzz has been created – with queues of fashion fans lining up on the street to get a glimpse inside.

SunSport takes a look at what Roy has been seen behind the wheel of.
    Aston Martin DB7
In 1999, soon after Keane became a Treble winner with United, he treated himself to a flashy custom-pained gold Aston Martin.

He opted for a DB7, which ironically was never in a James Bond film because it wasn’t deemed cool enough.
But, looking at it we have to argue. It boasts a 3.2 litre engine, black leather interior, and automatic gearbox.
In 2020, the car appeared on Auto Trader for sale at a modest £24,000 – with just 60,000 miles on the clock.
    Bentley Continental
In around 2005, Keane reportedly drove a classy Bentley Continental.

Today, you can pick a model up from that year for between £18,000 to £24,000.
But Keano would have paid far more than that – and north of £80,000
After selling it to a showroom in Edinburgh, it was reportedly stolen by joyriders and later recovered.

    Ford Escort Hatchback
Roy’s first car was a trusted Ford Escort Hatchback in the 1990s.
It was frequently the best selling motor in the 1980s and 1990s, with an astonishing 4.1 million of them sold through three decades .
The Escort was succeeded by the Focus in 1998 and gradually phased out of production.
Given it was a sensible option, you can imagine his first top-flight boss Brian Clough would have approved.

    Mercedes C-Class
Towards his later years at Old Trafford, Roy was seen driving a classy Mercedes into Carrington.
The C-Class oozed luxury and comfortability, and was at an affordable range when it was released of around £30,000.
That, obviously, made it a gateway into many car enthusiasts first taste of a Merc.
Although, they weren’t zippy. They’d go no faster in a 0-60 mph sprint than between 5-11.5 seconds, depending on the model.

    Toyota Yaris
It’s not known if Roy owned it.
But, back in August the kind-hearted TV pundit donated a £27,000 Toyota Yaris to a hospice in Co Cork.
He told staff he would foot the bill for it to be auctioned off in a raffle.
“Roy Keane’s incredible generosity means the world to us here,” said Enid Conway, fundraising and marketing manager at Marymount Hospice.
“A huge community of people receive the special care delivered by Marymount. It is inspiring to see this acknowledged by anyone wishing to support what we do.
“Marymount is a unique and essential force of care for families in Cork and further afield.
“We are sincerely thankful for Roy’s gesture and the positive impact it will have for those in our care and their families. It really is a wonderful act of kindness.”

    Range Rover
You’re not a footballer, or haven’t been in football, if you haven’t owned a Range Rover.
Roy owned an expensive £80,000 Sport model, but didn’t have much joy with it in 2016.

In an unfortunate incident, he was taking the SUV through a car wash at a Shell garage in Altrincham, when the machine stopped and trapped his vehicle.
Luckily there was no damage, but Roy was reportedly fuming.

Chelsea need to sign these three stars in January, according to transfer supercomputer – including £100m teenage striker

CHESEA’S owners face a transfer dilemma in January on whether they should slow down their spending or continue splashing the cash. There is pressure building on Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino with the club 10th in the Premier League

And there is a growing expectation the club will spend in January to get them out of trouble.
This would be coming on the back, however, of a £460million outlay in the summer as the club brought in the likes of Moises Caciedo, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi and Lesley Ugochukwu.
This came on the back of a £600m outlay the season before as Chelsea’s new ownership group looked to stamp their identity on the club.
Despite this, the club find themselves well off the pace of where they want to be, sitting in 10th in the Premier League and 12 points off the top four.

So, given that Chelsea have invested such huge funds into their playing squad over the last 18 months, is further spending really the answer?
The answer might actually prove to be yes but mainly because their recruitment to this point has not been good enough.
But Total Football Analysis’ xGold tool has identified three players with similar profiles to top other top stars who could prove transformative for the Blues in the second half of the season.
The xGold tool was previously used to identify names for Manchester United, with Chelsea now being the subject of the conversation.

    1. Sacha Boey, RB, Galatasaray – £22m
Sacha Boey has been identified as the ideal January recruit for ChelseaCredit: Getty
Boey impressed in the Champions League this season
The first area we have looked at is right back following another injury to club captain Reece James, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker being used as the blueprint to replace the position.
They have already brought in one French right-back in Malo Gusto to act as a backup option but xGold has identified a second Frenchman who has an 88 per cent likeness to Walker in Sacha Boey
Here we see an example of Boey’s dangerous movement when moving in possession
Boey dominated the right flank when playing at Old Trafford earlier this season
The 23-year-old has impressed in the Champions League with Galatasaray and has the kind of profile that could work well in the Premier League.
Boey is a fullback who can defend effectively and pass and move forward to support attacks and also possess the ability to tuck inside and support the centre-backs.
He is a superior defender to Malo Gusto with the ability to tuck inside and support his central defenders.
Boey is fast and strong but he also displays good game intelligence and anticipation.
Here Boey receives the ball and is intelligent enough to wait for his team-mates run before playing a pass
How Boey’s profile compares to Kyle Walker
And all of this comes at a cool estimated cost of £22m,
With James’ injury and right-back being an increasingly important position from a tactical point of view, the signing of a RB like Boey would give more depth and quality to the Chelsea squad going forward.
    2. Joao Neves, CM, Benfica – £105m
Joao Neves is the second name who has been identified by xGoldCredit: Getty
He has caught the eye at Benfica this season
Using Man City star Rodri as our second blueprint, xGold has returned an 85 per cent with Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.
Neves, 19, is already a full Portugal international and has a profile that would slot comfortably into the Premier League.
Neves is intelligent enough to find space in midfield to dictate play from
Neves has proven himself capable of being a heavy influence on games
Despite £222 pairing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caciedo already in the Chelsea midfield, there is a sense that they are still missing a midfielder who can be a true controller in deeper areas.
Adding a midfielder like Neves, who likes to drop deeper and build the attack by receiving the ball from his defenders in high volume, would bring another dimension to the Chelsea midfield.
This allows him to support build up play by creating numerical superiority which can progress the ball through an opposition press.
His exemplary passing range is added to by the variety of passes he can play, making him an all-action midfielder that would give Chelsea a strong base to build from.
Neves’ passing range mark him out as an excellent conductor
    How Neves compares to Rodri
Neves, however, will not be cheap. And his estimated cost of £105m could be a big pill to swallow after already coughing up north of £100m on two other midfielders.
However, he has the potential to go on to become one of the top players in World football and he certainly stabilise this Chelsea midfield.
    3. Evan Ferguson, ST, Brighton – £100m

Ferguson has been tipped as a star for the future
Considering the goal struggles among Chelsea’s forwards, the third star identified by xGold is Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, based off an 80 per cent match on the blueprint for Napoli ace Victor Osimhen.
Chelsea have been regular Brighton shoppers in recent seasons – Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo were both big money signings from the Amex – but they need to pay one more major visit to the Seagulls.
Ferguson’s profile mean he is capable of both holding up play and scoring goals himself
Ferguson has proven himself capable of dropping deep and leading the line
There are few better young forwards in world football than the 19-year-old Irish international, who is equally comfortable playing on the shoulder of the last defender or with his back to goal.
He is the definition of a forward that has ‘good feet for a big man’ and when receiving back to goal he has the ability to take the ball and combine with team-mates effectively in attack.
Ferguson is also, however, capable of receiving and spinning defenders who get too tight to him before driving forward and attacking towards the opposition penalty area.
At this point in time Chelsea are missing a forward who gives a real presence to the attack and who can hold the ball and bring others into the game.
Here Ferguson recieves the ball on the edge of the area before turning and curling a shot into the bottom corner
How Ferguson compares to Victor Osimhen
Given the speed Chelsea have in the wide areas and the technical players they have in the midfield, we believe adding a top-quality forward player will be the key in linking everything together.
Once again, Ferguson is not a player who will come cheap with some reports putting his cost as high as £100m, but Ferguson could feature at the top of their attack for the next decade.

    Conclusion
Using data and player profiles we can use tools like xGold to cut through the noise and sheer volume of players that are available to a team like Chelsea to help them to make smart decisions in terms of their recruitment.

The wildest footballers’ Christmas parties, from dwarf-tossing to fancy dress and shocking all-night benders

‘TIS the season to be jolly, and if you are a footballer, potentially to get yourself in a whole lot of bother. The busy Christmas period of football is nearly among us, with clubs all around the land playing fixtures around the clock.

But before then, some will indulge in a shenanigans of a festive party.
Often, in the past, these have gone very wrong.
From the extremely un-PC activity of dwarf-tossing to raucous all-night benders, these stars let their hair down maybe a little too much.

When notorious hardman Vinnie Jones is organising your Christmas party, expect fireworks.

But no one would have expected dwarf-tossing.
Vinnie organised a lock-in at a West London boozer for a Chelsea party in 1994.
As talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino explained: “The idea was to pick up a dwarf and hurl him as far as you could.
“I had a go, but I can’t remember how I did. They were heavier than I expected.”

    Liverpool, 1990s
Liverpool were the dominant force of football in the late 80s and early 90s.
John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Ian Rush and Co enjoyed plenty of success on the pitch.
Off it, they took fancy dress to another (controversial) level, with David Burrows once dressing up as Adolf Hitler.
But, it was Barnes dressed up as a Ku Klux Klan member for one Christmas party that really took the biscuit.
Speaking to BT Sport, legendary keeper Bruce Grobbelaar revealed about one night out: “There was a fellow in a white outfit with a pointy hat who was John Barnes, (he was) the Ku Klux Klan.”
Another tale recounts Steve McMahon minding the door of the venue, when he was confronted by a man wearing a white sheet.
“You can’t come in like that. John Barnes is in there,” McMahon is believed to have said.
“No,” said the man pulling off his hood. “He’s in here.”
Absolutely and I’d do it again… and go as Hitler to a fancy dress party.. fancy dress parties are there for you to make fun of people you go as and the kkk and Hitler are figures to be ridiculed so I see no problem in that… I wouldn’t go as kunta kinte with chains on…— John Barnes (@officialbarnesy) January 23, 2020

    Arsenal, 1996
Arsene Wenger had just landed at the club, while Patrick Vieira was one of his first signings.
But initially the Frenchman couldn’t put a curb on Arsenal’s Christmas bash of ’96 and the drinking culture that ran through the club.
“The tradition was we would go out and get absolutely leathered and then recover on our day off,” Dixon revealed to FourFourTwo.
However, Vieira turned up to the shindig with his car keys in hand and planned on having a nice meal and a glass of wine before getting an early night.
“The boys weren’t having that,” Dixon said.
“So we took his keys from him, and soon Patrick was loving it and dancing on the tables.”

    Newcastle, 1998
As a tradition, everyone loves a Secret Santa.
Well, everyone except perhaps Duncan Ferguson, Dietmar Hamann and bald Georgian Temuri Ketsbaia when they attended Newcastle’s 1998 party.
The gifts were handed out – but they were in incredibly poor taste.
Ferguson was handed a prison shirt, referencing time he spent behind bards, German legend Hamann was given a copy of Mein Kampf, while Ketsbaia received a comb.
Alessandro Pistone opened up his present to reveal a sheep’s heart that questioned his lack of commitment.
“I’m sure it was a joke,” the Italian unconvincingly said.

When you’ve got Joey Barton, there’s always a danger of things getting out of hand.
The clue that something could boil over could have been who Barton chose to dress up as… Jimmy Saville.
Armed with a cigar, Barton then got into an altercation with youth player Jamie Tandy at a Manchester hotspot.
He used the lit cigar as a weapon, stubbing it out on the youngster’s eye.
Barton was reprimanded by the club and fined six weeks wages.
Tandy would later claim the incident ruined his career.

    Man Utd, 2007
Party-pooper Sir Alex Ferguson banned Christmas parties from 2007 onwards. And this is why.
Several of the Man Utd team enjoyed a 13-hour bender in Manchester, which included a trip to Long Legs strip club, as well as some eardrum-splitting drunken-singing at a karaoke bar.
It was claimed that some players spent up to £4,000 on their night out.
Wags were barred from attending, with witnesses saying the stars were wild and out of control.
It must have helped for team morale, though, because the Red Devils would go on to win the Premier League and Champions League.

    Tottenham, 2009
In 2009, Robbie Keane tried to pull the wool over Harry Redknapp’s eyes.
He told the then Spurs gaffer he was taking his teammates to Dublin for a golf trip.
But he wasn’t. Instead, they went on a pub crawl – taking in The Big Smoke’s brilliant drinking holes.
Redknapp found out and went “mad”, according to Peter Crouch in his book.
The 16 players involved were all fined £20,000.
Redknapp said: “Wednesday was their day off and Robbie told me they were going to Dublin to play golf. I had no problem with that.

“I am not happy and it will be dealt with, and dealt with severely.
“I was shocked when I heard about it. I don’t see why parties should happen in today’s football – they’re more trouble than they’re worth.”
