Abandoned 25,500-seater stadium that rivalled Premier League sides now used as rugby pitch after £2million sale

THIS state of the art stadium constructed in 2003 has a 25,000 capacity and could rival some Premier League clubs.Yet it never saw football played at a higher level than the fourth tier.
This stadium was meant to take the club it hosted to the Premier League, but never saw football played at a higher level than League TwoCredit: Alamy
And to make matters worse, the capacity ended up being restricted to 10,000 by local planning regulations due to poor road access.
In 2012, after the football club that had played there were expelled from the FA and forced to re-form in the eighth tier of English football, the stadium was left abandoned.
For 120 years, the club had played its football at a rough-around-the-edges but much loved 8,500-capacity stadium called Feethams.
But things would change forever when businessman George Reynolds bought Darlington in 1999 and declared his intention to take the club all the way to the Premier League.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Reynolds immediately started work on a 25,500-seater new stadium two miles out of town, which the ever-modest millionaire named the George Reynolds Arena.
However, six months after the stadium opened he took Darlington into administration.
Reynolds was then arrested on suspicion of money laundering in June 2004.
In October 2005, he was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion while the money laundering charge was left on file.

The stadium would then become the Northern Echo Arena before being named simply, the Darlington Arena.
But attendances throughout Darlington’s stay there would average between 1,500 and 2,000, with the stadium becoming more and more unpopular due to the association with Reynolds.
With Darlington relegated from League Two in 2010 and the National League in 2012, the costs of playing at the Arena became unviable.
Under fan ownership, the club secured a groundshare with Bishop Auckland.
In 2016, they would move into Darlington Rugby club’s Blackwell Meadows stadium as the club returned to its home city.
But the question after the footy club left was what to do with the unloved Darlington Arena.
It was reported in 2012 that a deal had been agreed to turn the stadium into housing.
However, it would eventually be bought by third tier rugby club Mowden Park, thus saving the stadium as a sporting venue.
And that means it is once again slightly outsized for the competition it hosts.
The second largest stadium in rugby’s League One holds 8,500 people, with some stadiums in the league holding less than 2,000.
Despite spending years regretting the fact that the Arena was ever constructed, Darlington FC did make one bid to return to it.
This was during Covid when the capacity at Blackwell Meadows was restricted to just 527.
Darlington CEO David Johnston told BBC in 2020: “If we go down to 17 per cent [of Blackwell Meadows] we can’t even provide access for our season ticket holders, let alone any away fans.

“I have already asked the league to consider whether we could relocate to the Arena, which has a 25,000 capacity that would allow safe access and observe social distancing with the walkways, car-parking, everything.”
Nothing would come of it however, and with the pandemic over, the club do not appear to have any long-term desire to return to the Arena. More

Their dad, Danny Wilson, 67, said: “It’s uncanny, I watched Ryan play all his games as a youngster and now history is repeating itself in a different sport.”
Giggs was called Ryan Wilson until he was 16 and his parents split.
He grew estranged from his former rugby-pro dad, who says Beau has no interest in Ryan.

Beau played centre, the same position as his dad, to help Llandaff North beat Builth Wells 10-5.

I played in the 2007 Rugby World Cup final for England… now I’ve bought a non-league football team

A FORMER England Rugby player is one of the surprise people involved in the takeover of non-league club Yeovil Town. The National League side have finally changed ownership after weeks of speculation.
Ex-Rugby star Paul Sackey (right) and Matt Uggla are among the main faces heading up the Yeovil takeoverCredit: Rex
The SU Glovers group confirmed it had “taken on the stewardship” of the club earlier this week.
And former England World Cup star Paul Sackey is among the group involved, it has emerged.
The ace was a part of England’s rugby union side who got to the 2007 World Cup Final before losing to South Africa.
But now he has moved onto pastures new and is looking to help turn Yeovil’s fortunes around after a difficult few years.

The bid is believed to be headed up Sackey, businessman Matt Uggla and his mother Julie-Anne.
Sackey and Uggla were interviewed about their intentions for the club in a video uploaded to Yeovil’s social media channels.
Sackey, 43, said: “We love the history of the club. We’ve done a lot of research and background on the club and we love it.
“It’s got such a passionate fanbase. It’s a big club but the position it’s in now, it’s probably too big for this place, so we want to bring [the club] back to where it needs to be.”

Uggla added: “We’re really excited. It’s taken some time to get to this point but we’re really excited to be here and we’re hoping that we can move the club forward and bring it back to where it belongs.”
Yeovil were relegated out of the EFL in 2019 after 16 consecutive seasons in the football league.
Their mission for the rest of the season is to avoid being relegated again with the Glovers only out of the National League bottom four on goal difference. More

France 32 Scotland 21: Grand Slam dreams over as Scots go down fighting in Paris Six Nations classic

IT took 23 years for Scotland to emerge as Six Nations contenders. It took just 20 minutes for all our hopes and dreams to unravel in Paris.

Despite an heroic second half showing, the damage was done thanks to a truly disastrous start.
Gregor Townsend’s side were already a try down when Grant Gilchrist was shown a straight red card.
France – also reduced to 14 men in a crazy opening ten minutes – added two more scores before Scotland found their feet.
They then threw absolutely everything at the French in a bid to keep their Grand Slam hopes alive.

But they’d left themselves with just too much to do.
By the end of an enthralling encounter they were dead on their feet, unable to stop Gael Fickou from running in France’s fourth try right on full-time.
It was agony for the Scots who now have two weeks to prepare for their Triple Crown showdown with Ireland.
The title would be up for grabs if Scotland were to get a result at BT Murrayfield.

But they must quickly lick their wounds and regroup after this gut-wrenching defeat.
Two years ago, Scotland came to Paris and conquered.
On that occasion, Covid ensured the Stade de France was eerily empty.
This afternoon it was a cauldron of colour and noise.
The home side were desperate to bounce back from defeat in Dublin, while the visitors were aiming to keep their hopes of a first ever Six Nations title alive,
After back-to-back wins against England and Wales, Townsend’s side arrived in the French capital firmly in the Championship mix.
Yet this always promised to be a true examination of their title credentials.
Could they handle the hype? Could they shoulder the responsibility? Could they keep the dream alive?
In 2021, Duhan van der Merwe won it at the death for the Scots.
It secured a first win in Paris since 1999 – now they were hunting more history.
What they found in the first half was heartache.
In a truly astonishing opening to this test match, Townsend’s side were a man AND 19 points down inside 20 minutes.
They also butchered three try-scoring opportunities of their own.
Everything that could go wrong, had gone wrong.
Richie Gray was penalised on four minutes for going off his feet.
Thibaud Flament gathered the line-out for France before their forwards smashed up through a series of phases.
Romain Ntamack the man in space to score in the corner – Thomas Ramos adding the conversion.
Things immediately went from bad to worse for Scotland with Gilchrist shown a straight red card with just six minutes gone.
It was a shoulder straight to the head of Anthony Jelonch and in truth the giant Scotland star could have no complaints.

France drove back downfield with the Scots gifting possession deep inside their own ‘22 – Ethan Dumortier this time crashing over to score.
Jonny Gray replaced Hamish Watson as Townsend tried to bulk up his back row.
And almost immediately the Scots were thrown a lifeline with France were also reduced to 14 men.
Mohamed Haouas – the man sent off for punching Jamie Ritchie three years ago – dived straight through the defensive line, colliding with Ben White’s head.
It was a moment of madness and he too could have had no complaints.
But with 19 minutes gone the home side stretched their advantage.
Ramos intercepted Finn Russell’s telegraphed pass to run the length of the Stade de France to score.
Scotland could only curse their rotten luck. Zander Fagerson dropped the ball on the line just before Duhan van der Merwe was bundled into touch with the try-line in sight.
Yet still they kept coming and with 25 minutes gone Scotland did get their first try of the match.
Jamie Ritchie had gathered the line-out and when the ball was fed back to Russell he threw a lovely flat pass for Huw Jones to run onto and score.
    Russell himself added the extras.
France, however, would have the final say in a crazy first half – Ramos slotting a penalty in front of the posts after Matt Fagerson was penalised.
Scotland had to get on the scoreboard first after the break and with eight minutes of the second half gone, Jones barrelled over for his second try.
Sione Tuipulotu slipped a neat pass out the back door for Jones to score.
Russell added the extras and suddenly Scotland had hope.
France tried to close that door. Dumortier should have got his second try of the match but after being held up on the line, Gray was again penalised at the ruck.
Ramos stretched France’s lead to 11 points with 20 minutes to go.
Scotland, however, just kept coming. This side never knows when it’s beaten and with 12 minutes left, Russell rumbled over for our third try of a titanic tussle.
Adding the conversion, it was a four point game with a little over ten minutes left.
With the Scots spent, Fickou put the game beyond us with France’s fourth try.

During his time with the side, he developed a culture that taught squad members to take responsibility for their actions.
The All Blacks stars would have to sweep changing rooms after games, and if one caused delays to the other players, they would have to explain it to them instead of the coaches.
His policy was often referred as the ‘no d***heads policy’, and speaking about it he said: “A d—head makes everything about them.
