Tottenham and Sporting Lisbon honour the Queen in minute’s silence but section of home fans refuse to take part

A SECTION of Sporting Lisbon fans refused to honour Queen Elizabeth II during the minute’s silence ahead of their Champions League clash against Tottenham. Both teams were paying their respect to the late Queen, who sadly passed away at the age of 96 last week.

Spurs, who had their clash with Manchester City postponed following Her Majesty’s tragic passing, were given the green light for their match in Lisbon to go ahead.
As a mark of respect, players are competing with black armbands at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
And prior to the match, both sets of teams gathered in the centre circle to hold a minute’s silence for the Queen.
But a number of the home faithful refused to take part, as they continued chanting to leave social media in shock.

One user tweeted: “Harry Edward Kane MBE will not take kindly to Sporting fans disrespecting the moment’s silence.”
Another commented: “Sporting fans a disgrace during the minutes silence there.”
A third added: “Sporting fans being idiots during the minutes silence for the Queen. Why am I surprised?”
This person then raged: “Disgusting from the few Sporting fans.”

One supporter then messaged: “Poor from Sporting fans shouting out during minutes silence for the Queen.”
And another fumed: “Sporting should be ashamed of your fans for making all that noise during minutes silence absolutely shocking.”
Meanwhile another simply stated: “Sporting fans doing a nonsense.”
Prior to Spurs’ trip to Portugal, boss Antonio Conte revealed he paid his respects to the Queen by laying flowers outside Buckingham Palace on Friday.
He said: “What happened in the last few days in England is something extraordinary.
“Honestly, on Thursday, we were all sad because we are talking about a person whose service for this country was outstanding.

Man Utd vs Leeds and Chelsea against Liverpool among three Prem games AXED next weekend ahead of Queen’s funeral

PREM chiefs have called off the weekend’s two biggest matches because police resources are required to deal with the lead-up to The Queen’s funeral.Chelsea’s home clash with Liverpool and Manchester United’s game with Leeds are both postponed – despite the FA giving football the green light to resume across the country.

Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool is one of the games that has been postponedCredit: PA
The decision came hours after Uefa pulled the plug on Arsenal’s Europa League tie with PSV Eindhoven, citing “severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues” relating to the funeral.
That sparked fears that the Prem programme would be significantly impacted by demands on the police.
But after a day of talks between the authorities, Prem chiefs announced the other seven matches due to be played this weekend WILL go ahead, including two in London.
Although Brighton’s game with Crystal Palace remains off.

In a statement, the Prem said: “Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures.”
The postponements leave League bosses with an additional fixture pile-up to contend with although things would have been even worse if, as had looked likely, the majority of games had bitten the dust.
Instead, with Aston Villa against Southampton and Nottingham Forest versus Fulham staying as Friday night games, there will now be three games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
Kick-off times for the Saturday games at Wolves (12.30), Newcastle (3pm) and Spurs (5.30pm) have not been changed.
    Most read in Football
But Brentford vs Arsenal – which along with Tottenham’s match against Leicester had been under threat – will now start two hours earlier than scheduled, at noon, with Everton against West Ham pushed back 15 minutes to 2.15pm.
Earlier, the FA confirmed the return to play at all levels, with Tuesday’s Champions League game between Liverpool and Ajax, six Championship matches and the full programme in Leagues One and Two cleared.
Clubs have been “recommended” to hold a minute’s silence before all matches with players and officials wearing black armbands.
Wednesday’s Champions League games at Chelsea and Manchester City are also on but the competition anthem will not be played before kick-off at any of the games in England or Scotland.
The postponement of Arsenal’s game with the Dutch giants, though, leaves Uefa and the clubs scrambling to find a new date and the possibility that the Gunners may have to forfeit a 0-3 defeat.
With 3,000 PSV fans due to travel from Holland for a match which was classed as “Category One” by the police, it was clear that there would not be sufficient officers in attendance at the Emirates.
The decision means the majority of matches in the EFL, the delayed start of the Women’s Super League and Championship and non-league and grass roots football will go ahead at the weekend, although some games may still be postponed if requested by the police.
The wave of postponements set in motion by The Queen’s death last week have already forced domestic fixtures planners into emergency session.
Now Uefa faces a similar issue over Arsenal’s group match as the congested fixture list and Qatar 2022 means that the Euro tie may not be played before early January, two months after the November 7 draw for the knock-out phase.
The draw can go ahead with the two qualification places from Arsenal’s Group A unconfirmed and theoretically the first available date to make up the game would be January 10.
But Uefa could determine Arsenal are “to blame” for the postponement – as they are unable to fulfil the fixture –  and award the points to the Dutch side, following precedents set during matches cancelled through Covid outbreaks.
One alternative would be for the game to be slotted in on October 19, when Arsenal are due to be playing Manchester City in a full midweek Prem round, but that would both compromise TV contracts and be something League chiefs would resist.
While Villa’s game with Southampton was moved for TV reasons, Forest asked for their switch because the Royal London Cup Final is being held at Trent Bridge on Saturday.
And while Brighton’s game with Palace had been postponed because of the planned rail strike that is now not taking place, the match will not be reinstated this weekend.
The Prem added: “We would like to thank the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces across the country, as well as our broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.
“For the matches being played during the period of National Mourning, tributes will be paid to The Queen at Premier League stadiums.
“New dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course.”

From the Queen’s love of Arsenal to King Charles being a surprise BURNLEY fan: Who are the Royals’ football teams?

THOUGH Royals are supposed to remain politically neutral, there’s no decree that stops them from showing their bias towards their chosen football teams.Prince William isn’t shy to express his love for Aston Villa and can be found punching the air at home and away games at the sight of a goal.

William is also the President of the English FA, and in the summer of 2021, like most around the country he roared the Three Lions on as they came close to winning their first major tournament since 1966.
King Charles III also likes teams in claret and has a VIP season ticket at Burnley.
But there’s still mystery surrounding who the late Queen Elizabeth II supported.
It had been widely reported The Queen was a West Ham fan, continuing the royal obsession with clubs in a certain shade of purple.

However, Arsenal are also said to have had a special place in Her Majesty’s heart.
And despite trying to stay neutral, The Queen let slip who she supported on a number of occasions.
So, who do the Royals support?
North or East London, Your Majesty?

The longest-serving monarch in British history was sure to have seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to top-flight football.
And if reports are correct, The Queen, like many Arsenal fans endured an 18-year league trophy drought up until her death last Thursday, and watched on as Arsene Wenger’s glorious 22-year reign come to a bitter end in 2018.
Former Arsenal midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, has insisted that the late Queen was an Arsenal fan.
The Queen once invited Arsenal to Buckingham Palace in 2007.
Fabregas claims Her Majesty told him of her love for Arsenal.
He told Spanish radio: “It seems the Queen follows football and she told us she was an Arsenal fan.
“She appeared to definitely know who I was and we exchanged a few special words.”
The Evening Standard also quoted a royal source at the time who said: “Her Majesty has been fond of Arsenal for over 50 years.”

However, The Queen also has ties to West Ham.
The Queen is said to have openly expressed her support for West Ham at Buckingham Palace in a chat with staff.
Like many Hammers fans who wince at the mentioning of bitter rivals Millwall, The Queen involved herself in a conversation with staff after one revealed he was a supporter of the South London club.
The Mirror quote a Windsor Castle source as saying: “The Queen has never wanted people to know who she supports because she wants to be seen to be neutral.
“But she gave up her secret after overhearing one of her staff members saying he was a Millwall fan and was talking to another member of staff about the derby between West Ham and their arch rivals.
“They were quite shocked – after all, she’s not exactly your typical West Ham fan.”
The Queen also had an admiration for legendary West Ham boss Ron Greenwood.
She also presented England and West Ham icon Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet trophy following the 1966 World Cup final win at Wembley over West Germany.

    King Charles Burn-ed by relegation
King Charles III revealed he was a fan of Burnley in 2012.
He was handed a VIP season ticket and invited to watch his favourite team from the Directors’ Box after speaking highly of the club at a dinner for the British Asian Trust at Windsor Castle.
King Charles, 73, who had been doing charity work in the area, said: “A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley.
“Hence, some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said ‘yes – Burnley’.
“And people have responded, ‘Burnley?’ Oh yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.
“My charities have been working there together to demonstrate that an integrated approach can produce the best dividends.”
And The King was undoubtedly upset when Burnley faced yet more “challenging times” when they were relegated from the Premier League last season.
But the Clarets could make a swift return to the top flight after a positive start to the Championship season.
Although, King Charles may not get much time to watch Burnley after taking up his new role.

    Royal Villan
Prince William is a Royal Villan and he isn’t shy of showing his allegiance to the historic Midlands club.
The Prince of Wales, 40, attends Aston Villa games when he has time, and can be seen punching the air from home and away grounds as the goals fly in for his team.
Today’s Villa are a shadow of the European Cup-winning Villa of old.
But William is glad to be aboard the “emotional rollercoaster” of supporting a mid-table team.
He said: “I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.
“Aston Villa’s always had a great history.
“I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000. Sadly, Villa went on to lose to Chelsea.”
William attended his first Villa game aged 11.
Appearing on That Peter Crouch Podcast in 2020, he revealed: “I sat there among all the Villa fans and I loved it and thought the atmosphere was great.
“I felt a real connection with the club and I felt Villa was a very proud Midlands club and it felt very special.”

Prince William has also been President of the FA for over a decade.
The Royal took over the role in May 2006.
William is a regular at FA Cup finals, whether Villa are contesting it or not.
The future King has also used his position to publicly condemn racism in football.
Mental health in football has been another initiative Prince William has advocated for in his role.
In May 2020, William took part in a special BBC documentary titled Prince William, Football, and Mental Health.
William, alongside wife Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, and son Prince George, roared the Three Lions on last summer at the Euros.
William could be seen punching the air as England reached the Wembley final against Italy.
Luke Shaw’s early opener against the Italians got a Royal reaction.
However, Gareth Southgate’s side went on to lose on penalties – denying the Three Lions a major tournament win.

Prince Harry seems to be more of a rugby guy.
But he let slip that he was an Arsenal fan when he refused to talk about the Gunners’ Champions League 5-1 drubbing by Bayern Munich in 2017.
Harry made his views clear on his embattled football team at an England rugby training session.
The 37-year-old pulled a face when asked about who he supported.
As he chatted to sports coach Jack Gair, 19, the Royal asked which football team he supported.
“Man U,” said Jack, who asked the same of Harry.
“Arsenal,” said Harry and before the teen could say anything more, he put up his hand to signal stop, grimaced and said: “I know. Let’s not talk about it.”
And when conducting charity work with local children at the New Zealand government house in Wellington a few years back he was heard saying “most of the royal family are Arsenal fans”.

Kate Middleton, like husband William, is enduring an “emotional rollercoaster” as a Chelsea fan.
The Blues’ new owner Todd Boehly brutally sacked Champions League-winning boss Thomas Tuchel and replaced him with Graham Potter after a poor start to the season.
The Princess of Wales revealed she was a Chelsea fan at the Anna Freud Centre Christmas party.
Middleton bonded with one little boy, Rjay Bryan, over their support of the West London club.

The Premier League and EFL postponed all matches last weekend as Scotland followed suit along with a host of other sporting events to pay tribute to Her Majesty.
Now the EFL have announced that its midweek fixture list will go ahead as planned.
A statement read: “The EFL fixture programme will return as scheduled from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country.
“A minute’s silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums.

“With a national policing plan now in operation, the League and Clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.
“Consideration to individual circumstances will be made on a case-by-case basis, in line with standard match Safety Advisory Group (SAG) protocols.”
Meanwhile, football chiefs and police are continuing talks today over a number of potential match postponements for this coming weekend.

A host of police officers from across the country are set to be drafted into London to work on it and the other events surrounding the send-off with millions of mourners due to descend on the capital.
As we reported last week, that means that Sunday’s Premier League games between Brentford and Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and Manchester United vs Leeds are among those being discussed about being postponed or moved.
Up in Scotland, Rangers’ Champions League fixture at home to Napoli has been delayed for 24 hours and away supporters have been banned.
SunSport understands that England’s representatives in Uefa’s competitions this midweek will not be affected, with Arsenal’s Europa League clash in North London against PSV on Thursday still scheduled to go ahead.
But talks are still ongoing regarding the domestic top-flight clashes for next weekend.
Switching games to the opposition’s venue has already been discussed, but they have also hit major roadblocks.
For example, Liverpool’s neighbours Everton are also playing at home on Sunday, meaning Chelsea switching their game to Anfield is highly unlikely.
Meanwhile, a huge police presence is expected at Old Trafford for the game between heated rivals United and Leeds, which would also stretch resources.
And EFL fixtures are also at risk in and around London with Millwall, QPR and Watford due to be hosting matches.
But officials are still “hopeful” that a positive conclusion could be reached.
A National Police Chiefs Council spokesperson said: “We will work with football clubs to try and ensure that, where possible, football fixtures can take place safely when balanced against the requirement to support national events and deliver day-to-day policing.
“This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved.”

Rangers icon Graeme Souness explains why ordering famous portrait of the Queen was one of his first acts as Ibrox boss

GRAEME SOUNESS has opened up on why he felt it was right to honour Queen Elizabeth II as one of his first acts as Ibrox boss. The Rangers legend was made first team manager in 1986 and straight away ordered the presence of Her Majesty to be clear in the dressing room.
    Rangers legend Graeme Souness
Souness asked for the famous dressing room photo as one of his first acts as Ibrox boss
He has now spoken up on why asking for the famous portrait was one of the first acts he carried out after being appointed.
The image was soon put in place and has been hung above the captain’s position ever since.
It’s been shared by the likes of Ally McCoist and Allan McGregor as they paid their respects.
As the nation mourns the passing of the Queen – Souness explained his reasoning behind the decision and opened up on his experience of a personal meeting.
Writing in the Daily Mail, he said: “One of the first things I did when I became Rangers manager, seven years earlier, was ask our kitman, Doddie Soutar, to get me the biggest portrait of our Queen that he could find, which we hung on the home dressing room wall.
“It has remained there to this day.
“I was one of the few very fortunate people to meet the Queen when she came to Anfield in 1993 to visit the Hillsborough Disaster Memorial.
“I was Liverpool’s manager and I’ve never forgotten her empathy for the families and the club at that difficult time.”

What time is the two minute silence for the Queen’s funeral?

THE QUEEN sadly passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, aged 96, after she spent 70 years on the throne. Her funeral will be 10 days after Her death, and this is what you need to know about the national two minute silence that will happen in honour of Her Majesty.
What time is the two minute silence for the Queen’s funeral?
The Queen’s funeral is set to take place on September 19, 10 days after her death.
During the 10 days leading up to her funeral, the UK will be going through national mourning.

How to observe the two minute silence?

She earned the throne after her father, King George VI passed away on February 6, 1952.
That was the date when she became Queen, but she was crowned on June 2, 1953, a year later.
This was because they give time for the Coronation celebrations to pay respect to the deceased Monarch.
In fact, not even the Platinum Jubilee was celebrated on the day the Queen earned her title.

The same will happen for King Charles to officially be crowned and that is why there has been no date confirmed on when his Coronation will be held.
How can I watch the Queen’s funeral?
First, there will be a procession in the streets of London, which you can attend and observe from the sides.
The Queen’s coffin will be carried upon a gun carriage pulled by naval ratings using ropes rather than horses, just like they carried her father’s coffin.
Members of the Royal family and the military will also be walking along in the procession.
There are 2,000 guests expected to attend the service while millions are expected to be watching live on television from all over the world.
Many mourners are expected to show up to pay tribute to the Queen, former counter-terror chief Nick Aldworth said.
He said: “It’s probably the biggest operation that we’re likely to mount in the UK.”
In the UK, a number of TV and radio channels will be broadcasting the funeral live.
These include BBC, ITV and Sky and the BBC iPlayer offers free online live-stream.
In the US, the funeral will be shown live on NBC News and their streaming service NBC News Now.
CNN, ABC and Fox News will also be airing the funeral.
