Mayor apologises for bizarre replica of Chapecoense plane crash in Christmas decorations near site of sporting tragedy

THE mayor of the town nearest the site of a sporting disaster has apologised over a freakish Christmas decoration showed a plane that 19 footballers died on.Locals in La Union near the Colombian city of Medellin were furious after waking up to see a recreation of the crashed aircraft that was carrying the Chapecoense team in 2016.

The model, thought to have been put together using strips of aluminium, was going to form part of La Union’s festive decorations as part of a bizarre homage to the 71 people who lost their lives.
But mayor Edgar Osorio has now ordered its removal in the run-up to the seventh anniversary of the horror after a barrage of criticism.
Osorio said in a statement: “Given the installation of a replica model of the plane, referencing the tragedy nearly seven years which marked our community, has generated different reactions on social media, we have taken the decision to remove it from the main park.
“The Christmas decorations were never intended to hurt peoples’ sensibility, but we understand the discomfort it has caused and therefore we offer our apologies and will proceed to remove it.”

He added in a local radio interview: “I took the decision thinking about our Brazilian brothers.
“We have the commemoration of the accident on Tuesday and I know many of them are going to be here.
“There’s going to be a religious event and institutional acts, they always come, they do so every year.
“If at any moment someone on this planet has been offended, I offer my apologies as mayor.

“The Christmas decorations will be lit up without the Chapecoense plane replica model.”
Angry La Union resident Oliva Mejia, venting her fury at her town hall over the replica of the plane which went down killing 71 of the 77 people on board, said: “Out of a tragedy, the only thing they’ve done is make themselves look ridiculous.”
Santiago Campuzano added: “It makes you sad, because it looks like they’re celebrating and revelling in the suffering of other people.”
Another wrote on social media: “It was so odd seeing this representation of a plane wreckage. Are we really celebrating a tragedy?”
Only three Chapecoense players survived the LaMia Flight 2933 crash, which was caused by the plane running out of fuel.
The team were hoping to land in Medellin, where they were due to play the first leg of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana final.
Goalkeeper Jakson Follmann had one of his legs amputated as a result of the accident.
Journalist Rafael Henzel, one of the six survivors, died in March 2019 after suffering a heart attack while he played football with friends.
The Brazilian team, then in the country’s Serie A, ended up being relegated to the Serie B division in 2019 and have just survived a drop to the third division with a 3-1 win against Vitoria.
Chapecoense were only able to continue competing following the tragedy after clubs in Brazil made contracted players temporarily available to them.
In March 2021 Erwin Tumiri, one of the six survivors, walked away from a coach crash that claimed the lives of 21 people.
The 30-year-old cheated death for a second time in less than five years after the packed vehicle careered down a hillside near the Bolivian city of Cochabamba.
The Chapecoense air disaster occurred in the town of La Union, about 40 miles from Medellin.

Schaller was on board with his partner Christine Schikorsky, two children and two others, including the pilot, when the Piaggio P.180 Avanti plummeted into the ocean.
So far, two of the six bodies – an adult and a child – have been found since the horror smash.
The twin-engine turboprop jet was heading from Mexico to Costa Rica on Friday when it disappeared from the air control radar.
Rescue crews were able to locate the plane early on Saturday about 28 kilometers from Costa Rica’s Limon Airport.

Debris from the aircraft and backpacks have been recovered by the coastguard.
The eight-seater jet was built in 2009 and Schaller bought it in 2019.
Flight safety adviser Arthur Bayuk believes the pilot may have become “overwhelmed” as commercial flights have two people at the controls.
He told BILD: “The aircraft has an excellent safety record.

“The initial descent was controlled. Later, the individual pilot was probably overwhelmed.”
Schaller was pals with former boxing star Vitali Klitschko, who now serves as the Major of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.
The pair were friends for two decades and had visited Vitali, 51, and his brother Wladimir in war-torn Ukraine just this month.
Vitali and Wladimir became advertising stars for McFit in 2008.
Schaller was the CEO of RSG Group, which includes McFit, John Reed and Gold’s Gym fitness studios.
It is understood his empire employed 41,000 people in 48 countries.
Klitschko said Schaller had planned to build a gym to support Ukraine as Putin’s invasion rages on.

He told BILD: “We met 20 years ago, became close friends and spent a lot of time together.
“Rainer only visited us in Kyiv at the beginning of October.
“He planned to build the largest gym in the world to support Ukraine in these difficult times.”
Schaller was also mates with Vitali’s brother Wladimir.

Authorities have yet to identify the two bodies so far recovered as crews search for the others.

The incident happened at Spa’s notorious Eau Rouge corner, one of the most challenging in motorsport.
It comes just two years after promising F2 driver Anthoine Hubert was killed at the exit of Eau Rouge.
The drama unfolded when British driver Sarah Moore, 27, lost control at the corner and span into the tyre wall.
Fellow Brit Abbie Eaton, 29, was just behind Moore and also went off the track and into the tyres, deflecting into her compatriot.
Dutch star Visser, 26, Norwegian-Spanish ace Agren, 28, and Spaniard Marta Garcia, 21, went crashing into the British pair.
Visser’s car was sent flying up in the air before a sixth driver – not caught on camera – hit Visser and ended up upside down.

That was Fabienne Wohlwend, the 23-year-old from Liechtenstein, who recieved medical attention along with Moore, Eaton and Garcia.
Agren and Visser were hospitalised but both drivers have since confirmed they’ve not suffered any broken bones.
Visser tweeted: “Thank you all for your messages.
“That was a very scary one but I think I had an angel on my shoulder, I’m very sore but luckily I have no fracture.”
And Agren posted on Instagram: “Thank you everyone for your support and messages.
“I am all ok, bruised and sore but no broken bones… Today is a new day and I am looking forward to getting back behind the wheel soon.”
