The biggest wins in Premier League history, after Man Utd’s 9-0 rout of Southampton, including Chelsea and Tottenham

    RUTHLESS.
Manchester United showed how lethal they can be by putting Southampton to the sword in Tuesday night’s 9-0 win.

It’s the not the first time the Red Devils have been in ninth heaven, thrashing Ipswich Town in 1995. Southampton also have previous when it comes to shipping in nine goals in a game.
And while an encounter between Portsmouth and Reading in 2007 is the highest scoring Premier League game of all time, a 7-4 win for Pompey, we’re celebrating biggest winning margins.
Here’s seven mega wins that have stayed in the memory.
MAN UTD 9-0 IPSWICH TOWN, 1995
Incredibly, United scored six times in an astonishing second half against strugglers Ipswich during the 1994-95 season.

Andy Cole was in prolific form, netting five of the nine as Sir Alex Ferguson looked on in glee.
But United finished runners-up to Blackburn that season, predictably Ipswich finished rock bottom and were relegated.

    SOUTHAMPTON 0-9 LEICESTER, 2019
Under Brendan Rodgers Leicester City have been championed for their free-flowing football.
And with Jamie Vardy in their side, they’re always going to score lots of goals.

The former England international netted a hat-trick as they thrashed the Saints 9-0, while Ayoze Perez also shared the match ball with his fellow forward.

    TOTTENHAM 9-1 WIGAN, 2009
Like Andy Cole, Jermain Defoe put in a five star (or goal) performance against the Latics.
Amazingly though, all his five goals were scored in the second half of Wigan’s embarrassing 9-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.
Luck for Wigan they finished six points clear of relegation, if they were level their goal difference would’ve cost them because it was the worst in the league thanks to this defeat.

    NEWCASTLE 8-0 SHEFFIELD WED, 1999
This wasn’t even in the era of Kevin Keegan’s entertainers either.
But they did have a steady hand in Sir Bobby Robson, who loved building an attacking team.
And with Alan Shearer leading the line, they thrashed a sorry Owls team – with the England legend scoring five times.

    CHELSEA 8-0 WIGAN, 2010
Like Southampton, Wigan have a penchant for a Premier League tonking.
And this 8-0 capitulation happened remarkably the same season they lost at Spurs 9-1.
A Didier Drogba hat-trick, two from Nicolas Anelka, and one each from Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole bumped up the scoreline as the Blues lifted the Premier League title.

    SOUTHAMPTON 8-0 SUNDERLAND, 2014
This must’ve sent those stalwart Mackem fans on the Sunderland Till I Die documentary potty.
But at least it reminds them they were a Premier League outfit once upon a time.
Southampton stuffed them 8-0 under Ronald Koeman, and ended up recording a decent campaign finishing 7th and qualifying for the Europa League.

    MAN CITY 8-0 WATFORD, 2019
In what was a football masterclass from Pep Guardiola’s side, the Hornets were torn apart by a rampant City in 2019.
Inside the first 18 minutes, they were 5-0 up – with Kevin de Bruyne pulling the strings.
It was Watford’s biggest defeat in English football.
A season earlier, don’t forget, they were ripped apart again by City in the FA Cup final losing 6-0.

Man Utd kid Joe Hugill, 17, is 6ft 2in striker likened to Harry Kane and tipped by Solskjaer to play in the first team

MESSI, Salah, Maradona… Joe Hugill is in good company.
Like those star forwards, the Manchester United wonderkid is blessed with a magical left foot capable of hurting the opposition.

Joe Hugill scored the winning penalty – with his right foot – against Rochdale in the EFL TrophyCredit: Getty Images – Getty

It’s one reason why the Red Devils paid Sunderland £300,000 for the 17-year-old in 2020.
Hugill impressed earlier this season with United’s U21 team in an EFL Trophy win over Rochdale, coming close when he hit the woodwork and scoring the winning penalty (with his right foot) in a shootout after the sides drew 0-0 after 90 minutes.
The 6ft 2in star showed he is a capable target man – as comfortable receiving the ball on the deck as he is leaping for a long ball in the air.
And boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now revealed Hugill is closer to a first team start than £36million signing Amad Diallo, after dazzling with four goals in a 6-3 win over Liverpool for the U23 side.

Asked whether Diallo was pushing for his chance, the Norwegian responded: “We’re going to give him the time to settle in.
“If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I’d pick Joe Hugill.
“Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.”
Here’s why the Old Trafford hierarchy moved quick to secure Hugill’s services, beating off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

    A TRUE MACKEM
Born and bred in Sunderland, Hugill spent his entire youth career at his boyhood club.
In recent years, the Black Cats have produced an incredible array of talent.
England goalie Jordan Pickford and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson have risen to the top after coming through the ranks in the North East.
Josh Maja made waves in the Sunderland first team before he was signed by Bordeaux, where he thrived in France before joining Fulham in the most recent transfer window.

Hugill was born and bred in Sunderland

And Sam Greenwood earned rave reviews for Arsenal’s youth sides, after joining the Gunners in 2018 from the EFL League One side, and recently earned a £3million move to Leeds United.
Like those mentioned, Hugill shone at the ‘Academy of Light’, playing for both the U18s and U23s.
    TECHNICALLY SOUND
First thing you’ll notice about Hugill’s game is his touch.
When the ball is played to feet it sticks, and he’s able to bring others into the game with his link-up play.
But there’s also goals to his game too.
On his Premier League 2 debut, with Sunderland rock bottom of the table, he scored twice against West Ham in a 4-2 defeat.
Hugill also scored a hat-trick against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Youth Cup – alerting scouts to his abilities.

Hugill boasts similarities to Harry KaneCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Hugill impressed in the EFL Trophy win over RochdaleCredit: Rex Features
Although more slight in build, he has been compared to England hotshot Harry Kane in terms of his style of play.
He’s not blessed with pace, but he certainly knows where the goal is.
    UNITED’S YOUTH PUSH
Hugill is seen as one for the future by Nicky Butt, now head of first team development, but was formerly overseeing their youth set-up.

The graduate of the ‘Class of ’92’ oversaw the arrivals of Tahith Chong, Charlie McCann, France youth stars Aliou Traore and Hannibal Mejbri, Arnau Puigmal, and Largie Ramazani in that role, until Nick Cox took over the reigns last year.
And with his recommendation, Hugill was added to that list of promising youngsters.
Perhaps the class of 2020 can be just as impressive as Beckham, the Nevilles, Scholes and Co in years to come.

Man Utd star Paul Pogba has sights set on ‘big stuff’ as he looks to win trophies and get over ANOTHER semi-final loss

PAUL POGBA has his sights set on ‘the big stuff’ after shaking off yet another semi-final disappointment.
Manchester United went out of the Carabao Cup to neighbours City for the second time in 13 months on top of last-four defeats in the FA Cup and Europa League last season.

CASINO DEALS: BEST SIGN UP OFFERS TO CLAIM OVER £700
But with the chance to go top of the Premier League next week if they avoid defeat at Burnley, Pogba, 27, already has his eyes on a bigger prize.
He said: “The club is built on winning big things so that is all we want to get — the big stuff.
“We have to learn. Next time, we will do better. Last year they dominated us, that wasn’t the case so we are improving.”

United team-mate Bruno Fernandes agreed and posted on Instagram: “I’m very sad to once again don’t reach a final.
“We have to learn and understand we can’t make the same mistakes.”
Meanwhile Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised United fans one of the most exciting young players in world football with the arrival of Amad Diallo.
The Red Devils have confirmed the £37million transfer of 18-year-old Diallo from Atalanta as their first January signing.

Solskjaer said: “As a club, we have followed Amad for a number of years and having watched him myself, I believe he is one of the most exciting young prospects in the game.

Pogba seems keen to stay at United to help them win more silverwareCredit: –

“Manchester United has such a proud history of developing young players and everything is in place to enable Amad to reach his potential here.
The winger – who is yet to decide on his shirt number – told the United website: “After waiting since the summer, it is finally a dream come true to complete my move to Manchester United.
“I am hugely ambitious and there is so much that I want to achieve in the game; when I spoke to the manager I knew that I had joined the perfect club.
“This is a really exciting squad with so many great players, I can promise that I will work hard every day to learn from them and give everything to develop my game.
“The coaches have been fantastic since I signed, we have been in touch regularly and they have already given me a lot of great advice.
“I have had time to prepare for this move, both physically and mentally, and I have worked really hard to be ready to make the step up to this amazing club.”

Man Utd signing Amad Diallo boasts explosive pace, is called ‘kid’ by Pogba and scored on his debut within four minutes

DESCRIBED as a generational talent by the Italian media, Amad Diallo has Manchester United fans eagerly anticipating his arrival.
The 18-year-old was signed by the Red Devils in October for a reported £37million fee, and is expected to link up with his team mates in the next coming days once a work permit is issued.

Diallo shared a snap on Instagram on Monday jetting off on a private plane

On Monday, he shared a snap on Instagram flying out on a private plane – and given his career progression so far that’s a life he will surely become accustomed to.
Diallo only made his professional debut in 2019, when he came on as a sub for Atalanta in the 79th minute of their Serie A game against Udinese.
But within four minutes his name was on the scoresheet and a buzz was generated.
No wonder Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is purring at the thought of adding the exciting winger to a resurgent Red Devils squad that’s in title contention this year.

    OUT OF AFRICA
Diallo was born in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and moved to Italy at the age of 10.
The family settled in a town near Parma, and at the suggestion of Fabrizio Gilioli, the father of ex-Modena player Cris Gilioli (currently a coach at US Sassuolo) Diallo and his brother Hamed would join local boys’ side Boca Barco.
Both went on to trial at AS Lucchese after being spotted by former AC Milan goalkeeper Giovanni Galli.
But it was Amad who would be signed up professionally first in 2014.

After impressing Atalanta youth coordinator Maurizio Costanzi at a tournament in which he was the youngest player, as well as top scorer, Diallo was invited to train with I Nerazzurri.

Diallo’s official Instagram page contains a photo of the winger with Pogba who was at Juventus in 2015.
When the teenager’s transfer to United was confirmed, the French World Cup winner sent him the message “Welcome, kid” with a wink emoji.
    IMPRESSIVE FROM THE START
Without his older brother Hamed (who signed for Empoli in 2015 and now plays for AS Sassuolo) to protect him, Diallo could have found his new surroundings daunting.
Initially, he began life in the U14 championship in Italy, but was soon promoted to the U15 team.
There, he led Atalanta Primavera into the Final Eight – a playoff tournament that pits the best U15 teams in Italy against one another.
They faced off against Roma in the final, and it was no surprise who made the difference.
Diallo starred and scored in a 2-0 win as Atalanta were victorious.

Italian media have labelled Diallo a generational talent
    FIRST TEAM CALL-UP
More goals followed at youth level – 12 in 27 appearances in 2017-18 for the U17 team, then a season later six goals and six assists in the U19 championship – helping Atalanta win it.
A star-turn at the Supercoppa Primavera – where he provided two assists in a 2-1 win over Fiorentina – convinced first team coaches he was ready for the bigger stage.
Four days before Halloween in 2019, Diallo put the frighteners up Udinese.
Coming on as a sub in the 79th minute, the wideman received the ball just past the halfway line and drove towards Udinese’s defence, who backed off in fear.
He then unleashed a powerful low shot from the edge of the box that whistled into the back of the net. A star was born.

It’s no wonder Solskjaer is eager to link up with his new prodigy, and plans on throwing him in at the deep end.
The Norwegian has called Diallo an “exciting prospect” and reportedly feels it would be a waste of time keeping him out of the limelight in youth football.
Given his instant impact at senior level, could he be the final piece in the jigsaw needed to bring the Premier League crown back to Old Trafford? You wouldn’t bet against it. More

Man Utd outcast Sergio Romero is Brighton transfer target as they look to offload keeper Matt Ryan

BRIGHTON will make a move for Manchester United shotstopper Sergio Romero should Matt Ryan leave the club, according to a report.

Argentinian Romero, 33, has yet to make a match day squad for the Red Devils after losing the No2 position to Dean Henderson, who returned to the club after two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.
Reports claim that Brighton will face competition for Romero’s services, with an unnamed Spanish side registering their interest in the former international, while The Athletic have linked him to David Beckham’s Inter Miami.
Romero has been training in Argentina ahead of the January transfer window.

He was left disappointed in the summer when a loan move to Everton fell through.
Astonishingly, his wife Eliana Guercio launched a stunning attack on the club – claiming his move was blocked and demanded United showed her husband more respect.
She wrote in a post on Instagram: “Sergio Romero worked hard for his club.
“Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him. He helped the team reach 4 finals/semifinals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all.

“It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!!!”

Ryan has revealed Potter’s stance in regards to his future at Brighton.
He told The World Game”The day before the Fulham game, the manager told me he’d be giving the other goalkeeper a substantial to run to see how he goes, and would be keeping Jason Steele as his second choice as he likes the way he fulfils the role,” he told The World Game.
“He added that if I get a good offer in January I should take it, knowing that I want to be playing week-in week-out.”

Man Utd most valuable brand in Premier League at £1.07 BILLION as Tottenham overtake rivals Arsenal for first time

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on football clubs’ worth, no doubt.
But Manchester United are still the most valuable brand in the Premier League.

Despite the pandemic, the Red Devils are worth a whopping £1.07bn, according to research conducted by Safe Betting Sites.
Their nearest rivals on and off the pitch are Premier League champions Liverpool, who are valued at £1.02bn.
While Tottenham are a bigger commercial entity than their North London enemies Arsenal.
    CITY SLUMP
Losing out to Liverpool in an exciting title race has seen Manchester City’s stock fall off the pitch too.

The Reds aided their worth by landing the Champions League in 2019, as well.
Last year, Manchester City WERE worth more than Jurgen Klopp’s men with a value of £1.03bn.

However, this year they’ve fallen to third in the most valued brand race – dropping to £912m.

    MISFIRING GUNNERS
Gone are the years when Tottenham used to live in the shadow of their North London neighbours Arsenal.
The Gunners endured a miserable campaign last season, and have missed out on an all-important Champions League since 2017.
That has severely impacted the club’s worth – as they’ve dropped from being valued at £791m in 2018 to £583m in 2020.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

Spurs, on the other hand, have gone from strength to strength in a golden period in their history – reaching a Champions League final in 2019.
They also moved into, arguably, the best stadium in the country that same year.
Tottenham are now worth £635m – that’s an insane jump from the £264m they were worth just five years ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s top five ‘Fergie Time’ moments as Man Utd’s legendary boss celebrates 79th birthday

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sir Alex!
The legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson turns 79 today, and despite retiring seven years ago his legacy at Old Trafford will never be forgotten.

He won the Premier League 13 times with Manchester United, as well as delivered two Champions League titles.
And they did that in style, often winning games in the final moments or as it became to be coined ‘Fergie Time’.
But what were the best ‘Fergie Time’ moments that invoked ‘Squeaky bum time’ and had United fans jumping for joy? Let SunSport reveal our top five.

    5. UTD 4-3 MAN CITY 2009-10
Nothing is better than beating your cross town rivals than nabbing a last-minute winner.
And Fergie’s men pushed to the final kick of the game in their Premier League match against Manchester City during the 2009-10 season.
It seemed United would have to settle for a point at Old Trafford, when Craig Bellamy netted an equaliser in the 90th minute.
However, six minutes into added time Michael Owen popped up with a real poachers effort to secure the three points.

    4. UTD 3-2 ASTON VILLA 2008-09
There’s something about the Theatre of Dreams that evokes real drama.
And a new leading man was born during the 2008-09 season, with Aston Villa threatening to derail Manchester United’s title bid.
With 10 minutes to go, Cristiano Ronaldo equalised to ensure a frantic finish at Old Trafford.
Then, as the clock struck 90 minutes, an unknown 17-year-old by the name of Federico Macheda turned in the box and curled home a stunning winner.

    3. UTD 2-1 LIVERPOOL 1998-99
The 1998-99 season was Manchester United’s most successful as a football club.
They famously won the treble that year, although you might argue luck was on their side in the FA Cup.
Before THAT semi-final against Arsenal when Dennis Bergkamp missed a last-minute penalty, many will forget they scrapped through against Liverpool in the fourth round.
Dwight Yorke levelled in the 80th minute with United looking seemingly doomed.
Then, as a replay loomed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer popped up with a typical predator’s finish in injury time to send United through to the next round.

    2. UTD 2-1 SHEF WED 1992-93
It was a game that kicked off the ‘Fergie Time’ saying and sparked famous touchline celebrations from Sir Alex and his assistant Brian Kidd.
United were trailing Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 with four minutes to play when captain Steve Bruce, who hadn’t scored in six months, headed home from a Denis Irwin corner.
And Fergie’s team weren’t done yet. As United threw the kitchen sink at the Owls – they secured a winner with ANOTHER Bruce header.
That confidence booster inspired United to win their last five games and land their first league championship for 26 years. You could argue it also ignited the Sir Alex revolution.

    1. UTD 2-1 BAYERN 1998-99
It will always be Sir Alex’s most famous victory, and it couldn’t have been more epic.
The Scot dreamed of winning the Champions League after dominating domestically.
And for the majority of their game against German giants Bayern Munich they were completely outplayed.
However, they hung on in there until the final moments – winning a corner in the last minute and trailing to Mario Basler’s early goal.
91 minutes were on the clock when Teddy Sheringham swept home an equaliser.

With the Bayern’s morale depleted, United won another corner minutes later.
David Beckham whipped it in, for Sheringham to meet the ball with his head and Solskjaer to tap it into the roof.
United were european champions, and they couldn’t have done it more fittingly… in ‘Fergie Time.’

But it’s the new kid on the block, 17-year-old McNeill, who is earning major plaudits.
A £750,000 signing from crosstown rivals Manchester City, who will be kicking themselves for losing another top talent (think Jadon Sancho), McNeill has already turned heads at Old Trafford.
In 2018, he inked a six-year deal with Adidas that could net him over a £1million.
And in his first eight starts for the Under-18s, he’s netted six times – settling into his new surroundings much quicker than imagined.

But there shouldn’t really have been any doubts that his goalscoring prowess wouldn’t immediately translate with his new side.
After all, McNeill scored over a staggering 600 goals at youth level.
    ALWAYS A RED DEVIL
Astonishingly, McNeill has bounced between the Manchester clubs a few times.
He was originally part of United’s academy and played alongside Greenwood.

In 2014 he made the switch to Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the most impressive young strikers in European football.
His record in front of goal was nothing short of amazing.
For City’s U15s team he scored 110 goals in 72 games – while also registering 38 assists.
Knowing they had to lure McNeill back, United fought off competition from Juventus and RB Leipzig to bring him back to Old Trafford in October.
    ‘RIDICULOUSLY GOOD’
McNeill’s start to his second coming at United has been phenomenal.
According to the Manchester Evening News, they’ve been told by United sources that the hotshot teen has been “ridiculously good” in training sessions.

On his U18 debut his double earned United a 4-0 win over Derby County.
And in a stunning 4-3 win over Liverpool, he showed how lethal he is in front of goal – bringing a Noam Emeran cross down with one touch before driving a shot into the bottom left corner.
He’s a man who knows instinctively where the goal is.
With Greenwood and Rashford working alongside him in tandem, United should be good for goals in years to come.
