Inside bloody world of Italian ultras as they threaten chilling ‘battle plan’ to attack England fans for Euros match

THE bloody world of Italian ultras has been exposed after their chilling “battle plans” to attack England fans were foiled. The terrifying claims follow an “online threat” from an ultra group ahead of this week’s European Championship qualifier between England and Italy.

More than 3,000 Three Lions’ fans are expected to travel for the grudge match – and their welfare is now the chief concern of football officials.
Despite Italian authorities reassuring touring Brits that it would be safe to attend the match, football hardmen say otherwise.
Anthony Phythian, a boxer and former staunch member of Manchester City’s feared Young Guvnors, told The Sun Online the Italian ultra groups were ruthless.
Phythian said: “I first came across the Naples ultras around 2011 when they came to Manchester.

“They were very intent on what they wanted to do.
“Like other Italian clubs I’ve come across, they have a serious dislike for the English.
“Their weapon of choice is their belt.
“They usually wear them with big buckles and then take them off and use them as a weapon.”

The FA on Tuesday told England fans travelling to the match not to wear belts as they could be confiscated by officials over fears they could be used as weapons.
The bloodthirsty hooligans who targeted the English supporters ahead of the Euro match were reportedly from the Napoli ultras.
The group has one of the worst reputations in Europe for extreme violence and have been known to use knives, bats and even Molotov cocktails to quell their rival supporters.
At 39, ex-hooligan Phythian admitted he had seen a lot of football violence in his time but said the Italian thugs were a shameless mob.
Phythian said: “I have not been to Naples myself but a lot of the old boys have.
“When speaking to people who went to Naples for the away fixture, they told me guys on mopeds were scouting bars and looking for City fans.
“Later on they would see guys wearing motorcycle helmets in large groups coming to attack them.
“I’d say football hooliganism on the continent is definitely on the rise.”
Another football mad Brit, Dave Morrison, said he has been to Naples twice and was in no hurry to return.
He said: “It is one of the most dangerous places to go as an away supporter.”

Meanwhile a chilling message sent to a top English fan has raised serious concerns.
Earlier this week, a threatening email purporting to be from a Naples ultra group was sent to a member of the “EnglandfansFC”.
Garford Beck, organiser and lifelong England fan, was the man on the receiving end of it and immediately raised concerns with football officials.
His team of fans were set to play a friendly match against their Italian counterparts in celebration of the international showdown.
The 60-year-old told the Times he feared for his team’s safety.
He said: “I received a very sinister and threatening email purporting to be from the Napoli ultras this morning.
“It read, ‘You advertise this game for us to see where you’ll be. We will be there. 60 ultra to get you. Be warned.’
“I’ve been in contact with my oppo at the FIGC [Italian FA].
“I showed it to him and said ‘can you show it to the local authorities and police and see if they think it is a viable threat.’
“Our contact at the FIGC spoke with their security officer.
“They came back and said, ‘We are very concerned.’
“They are treating it very seriously and have judged it to be a viable threat.”
Despite the Italian FA efforts to monitor the situation, the friendly match was later called off on Monday afternoon.
Nevertheless, the Euro fixture will still go ahead and is set to take place at Napoli’s Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Thursday – an area fraught with the threat of danger for visiting supporters.
Just last week, the streets of Naples were overwhelmed with thuggish violence before Napoli’s Champions League match with Eintracht Frankfurt.
The German supporters defied a police ban and clashed with Napoli ultras, which left more than eight hooligans arrested.
Pictures showed the total carnage with shop fronts smashed up, cars lit on fire and masked thugs storming alleyways with weapons as they hunted their rival supporters.

    Who are Italy’s football hooligans?
Italy’s notorious ultras are essentially violent gangs attached to footie teams, who fight in the streets on match day.
The thugs have been known to attack their victims with pick-axe handles, iron bars, chains, grenades, flare-guns, axes, knives and pistols.
A lot of ultras claim they care nothing about football and it’s all about territorial defence, the fights and the “mentality”.
There are an estimated 4,000 ultras in Italy – with the numbers of fans joining these hardcore groups on the rise.
All the major terraces of Italian stadiums are run by the ultras who receive free tickets and political support because the force of their numbers is so great.
Tobias Jones, author of Ultra: The Underworld of Italian Football, explored the expansion of the violent football underworld.
Jones said: “Everyone says that being an ultra is a way of life.
“But it’s a way of life that has evolved, mutated, regenerated and reinvented itself.
“It truly hurts me to see what happens on the terraces now.
“There’s been an escalation and we’ve gone from fist-fights to knives, from knives to flares, from flares to ambushes, to Molotov cocktails, to bombs and to pistols.
    “It keeps getting worse.”

    Criminal underworld
Most ultra groups have strong links to organised crime syndicates, including the Mafia.
Some of the biggest groups are the Droogs of Juventus, named after the violent thugs in A Clockwork Orange, and Lazio’s Irriducibili.
In 2019, the head of Irriducibili was convicted of dealing hundreds of kilos of cocaine in the capital.
Cops claim 30 per cent of ultras are either petty or major-league criminals.
The vast majority of groups also have neo-fascist names, symbols, slogans and salutes, invoking the words and ideals of Hitler and Mussolini, and despise foreigners.
Many ultra groups have links to the far right and each has a “president” or capo, who gives orders at military style meetings ahead of matches.
It is at these meetings that members decide on match slogans, songs, attacks and ambushes.
Ultra members usually dress identically and have been known to spend tens of thousands of euros on what they call “choreographies” – stadium mosaics, taunts, flags and flares.
An ultra group’s own banner is like a military herald and they will fight to the death for it.

    Generations of bloodshed
Violence has been associated with Italian football since the dawn of time.
The term “ultra” was first used in the 1820s but it garnered more sinister connotations in 1970.
Following a match that year, fans followed a referee to the airport and destroyed everything in their path, which a journalist witnessed and subsequently labelled them with the term.
Ultras inhabit a world where nicknames emerge from surnames or faces or habits – Zorro earned the nickname when he cut a Z into the cheek of an enemy.
There was a tradition in many grounds that the turnstiles would be opened for the last 15 minutes of the match to allow those who couldn’t afford a ticket to come in.
For the ultras it was an excuse to leave the ground and go hunting for their rivals.

The former Chelsea and Leeds striker is joining Gareth Southgate’s coaching staff.
The 50-year-old, who won 23 caps for the Netherlands between 21998 and 2002, was pictured in the training session joking with the other coaches and talking to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.
Last week, Hasselbaink was thought to be “in advanced talks” with FA after leaving his post as manager of Burton Albion in September.
Hasselbaink would be the replacement for Chris Powell, who left the set-up as his contract expired.

Powell informed Southgate and the FA of his intentions to focus on his current role as head of coaching at Tottenham’s academy.
A move for Hasselbaink will also continue the FA’s commitment to improving diversity in football, giving opportunities to more black coaches within England’s teams.
The Three Lions’ match against Italy will be the first of their qualification campaign for the Euros in Germany next year.
The team will be hoping to go one further than in 2021 when they lost in the final at Wembley Stadium to the Italians on penalties.

F1 ace Lando Norris ‘robbed of his incredibly rare £144,000 designer watch while leaving Wembley after Euro 2020 final’

F1 ACE Lando Norris was robbed of his “unique” £144,000 designer watch in Wembley Stadium’s VIP car park, a court heard yesterday. The McLaren driver, 23, was targeted for his Richard Mille timepiece – one of only five in the world – as he walked to his £165,000 McLaren GT after the Euro 2020 final.

The Richard Mille “prototype limited edition McLaren watch”, also known as the RM6702, was the only one in the world with a blue strap made to measure for the driver’s wrist.
Despite never being made available for sale, the designer estimates the value to be around £144,000 – excluding VAT.
Liam Williams, 25, from Merseyside has denied robbing the Belgian-British F1 star on July 11, 2021.
He appeared at court today wearing a navy-blue t-shirt and grey ripped jeans.

The robbery came after England’s defeat to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Tyrone Silcott, prosecuting, said the attack happened in the VIP yellow car park at Wembley Stadium following the final.
Mr Norris told Harrow Crown Court it was midnight and raining as he spoke to members of the public next to his McLaren.
He then realised two suspects were circling the car.

He added: “I noticed the suspect looking around my car and myself while keeping his head down. I believe his right hand was near, or on, his pocket.”
The first suspect “slowly approached”, he added.
“When I turned towards him, he asked me ‘is this your car?’ I do not recall exactly what happened.
“Suspect 1 then went behind me and put his right arm around my neck and his left arm was under my back.
“Suspect 1 pushed me into him and pulled me back by my neck.”
Lando was left looking up at the sky as the first man told the second to “grab the watch”.
He added: “Suspect 2 struggled to get the watch for a while however they used force to pull the watch off leaving scratches on my arm.
“When suspect 1 had his arm around my neck the suspect manages to get the watch off my left wrist.”
After just 30 seconds the attackers ran away via a nearby pedestrian walkway.
Cops took two swabs from the F1 driver, two from his neck and two from his left wrist, where the watch was stolen.
The prosecutor said the tests suggested a match with Williams’ DNA.
And Williams’ phone records show he travelled to Wembley from Liverpool on the day of the theft.
His phone was logged near Wembley Stadium in the early hours of July 12, 2021 before travelling back to Liverpool on July 13, 2021.
Williams was arrested in Liverpool on July 18, 2021 on suspicion of robbery and attended a voluntary interview that day, where he answered no comment to all questions.
He was interviewed again on July 19 and answered no comment again to all questions.
On that same day a “video identification” took place, however Mr Norris was unable to identify him as one of the robbers, jurors heard.

He then attended a third interview on December 12, 2021 where he again answered no comment to all questions.

But the Three Lions have confirmed Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Nick Pope did not link up with the team today.
Goalkeeper Pope managed to get through 90 minutes for Newcastle at Nottingham Forest on Friday but has been nursing a minor injury.

So he has been replaced by Tottenham stopper Fraser Forster to join Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale.
Forster has six England caps to his name, making his debut in 2013 and last featuring in 2016.

He was last part of the camp in March 2022 – his first call-up for five years – but did not feature.
Forster is currently filling in for Hugo Lloris at Tottenham.

The Manchester United striker withdrew from the squad after picking up a knock in Sunday’s FA Cup win over Fulham on Sunday.

And the news is a blow for Southgate because Rashford, 25, has been in terrific form since the World Cup, scoring 19 goals in 25 games.
Another injury is also a frustration because over the last three seasons, he has pulled out from a number of internationals with injuries.
Mount, 24, was initially called up by Southgate with England not realising he was still not fully fit.
The Chelsea midfielder last played on February 26 and although he has returned to training with his club side, he is not ready to feature on international duty.
It means Mount will stay at Cobham to continue his rehab with Raheem Sterling but Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Conor Gallagher all travelled to St George’s Park.

Italy turn to Argentinian-born Mateo Retegui, who plays like Harry Kane and whose sister won an Olympic silver medal

THIS Thursday Gareth Southgate’s England may come up against a legitimate representative of football’s world champion. That might seem strange. Opponents Italy failed even to make it to the last two World Cups.

But coach Roberto Mancini has sprung a surprise, including in his squad striker Mateo Retegui from Argentina.
There is nothing new in Italy calling up South American players.
Millions of immigrants flooded across the Atlantic in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and their descendants are able to play for Italy.
Back in the 1930s, when Italy won its first World Cups there were players in the squad who had been born in Uruguay, Brazil – and especially in Argentina.
    read more football news
Buenos Aires is probably the most Italian city in the world outside Italy, where the local version of Spanish comes with a strong Italian intonation.
If Retegui makes his debut against England he will be the 24th Argentine to pull on the blue shirt.
But there is a difference. The typical route is for the South Americans to come across and play their club football in Italy – such as Arsenal’s Brazilian born midfielder Jorginho, also included in the squad, who made his name in Serie A before moving to the Premier League.
But this is not the case with Mateo Retegui. His only connection with Italy is his maternal grandmother.

His entire career – so far – has been in Argentina, and he is 100% the product of Argentine football – and hockey.
Hockey is big in Argentina, and Retegui comes from a family steeped in the sport.
His mother was an important youth player in the 1990s.  His sister won an Olympic silver medal in Tokyo, coached by her father.
Carlos Retegui won plenty of titles as a player, and has won lots more in charge of the Argentina women’s team.
Young Mateo inevitably spent time in the sport before dedicating himself to football.
He was once on the books of River Plate before coming through the ranks and turning professional with Boca Juniors.
He is still owned by Boca, although his first team experience with them is limited to a few minutes off the bench back in November 2018.
Since then he has been loaned out, first to Estudiantes of La Plata, then to Talleres of Cordoba.
But it was last year that things really started to take off.
He joined Tigre from the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, close to where he grew up, and the goals have been flowing ever since.
Retegui has gained the tag of the Argentine Harry Kane, and it is not hard to see why.
Two-footed and strong on the ball, he is able to drop deep and combine while also carrying a goal threat on the ground and in the air.
The start of his career can also be compared with that of the Tottenham striker, with wandering loan spells before establishing himself as something of a late developer.
