      McLAREN’S decision to join Formula E could prove to be a masterstroke — both on the track and in the boardroom.The legendary Formula One team confirmed last week that they will join the series next season in time for the Gen3 era — the third generation of the all-electric racing car that promises to give the championship a boost.

      Gen3 is said to be the quickest electric racing car in the world, with a top speed of more than 200mph.
      Now, I’ve always been a supporter of FE since its debut in 2014. It is not F1, neither does it want to be F1. It is a world championship event in its own right.
      I can see the benefit of manufacturers competing in the environmentally-friendly series — and, subsequently, it has attracted big sponsors, too.
      Plus, I can also appreciate the excitement of pop-up events in city centres, where it is possible to watch qualifying, go for a pint in a pub and then return to watch the race.

      But McLaren’s entry to FE has caused a stir in F1 circles, with some suggesting the team are spreading themselves too thinly.
      As well as F1 and FE, McLaren are also involved in the IndyCar series in the US and Extreme E — the electric off-road championship.
      Granted, that is a lot of championships at a considerable cost, especially when they are not yet regular-enough winners in F1 to start taking a breather.
      But I would argue that over the past four years, they are the most improved team, having gone through a complete restructuring — and that would imply they know what they are doing.

      And therefore, it seems very sensible they would join FE, especially when you consider how they are doing it — by taking over current champions, Mercedes, who are leaving at the end of the season.
      Inheriting the team that heads the field would seem to be much smarter than starting from scratch, as others have.
      We do not know yet who will be driving but Ian James, current boss of the Mercedes-EQ FE team, will be staying — another wise move by McLaren.
      In taking a step into FE as a front-running outfit, McLaren will be hoping that translates to success on the track.
      But more importantly, perhaps, is the benefit that being in FE will bring to their road cars.
      McLaren want to use that FE knowledge for their supercar production line — which makes perfect sense.
      Others may turn their noses up and make jokes about McLaren sticking to racing petrol engines rather than milk floats.
      But I think the move is a good one because, like it or not, we are all going to be driving electric cars rather soon.

      IT’S MIAMI STRIFE, DIP
      THE messy fallout from the Miami Grand Prix goes on with more reports of disgruntled guests — this time Grammy-winning DJ Diplo has had his say.
      After being invited as a guest of Red Bull hospitality, he said: “I still don’t know anything about F1. It was this bad box, like a jail.

      “Also they had no food, and all I wanted was a sandwich, so I left.
      “When you watch it on TV, it’s so sick to watch the shot, but being there live, I couldn’t get any vibe.
      “It was sort of stressful. It was just a lot of walking around for no reason.”
      That said, armchair fans tuned in, with an average viewership of 2.6million making the Miami race the LARGEST audience for a live F1 broadcast on American television.

      THE BRIT AWARDS
      THERE was a victory for Team BRIT at Snetterton — with Chris Overend and James Whitley winning the second race on Sunday in the Britcar Trophy.
      If you are unfamiliar with the team, they are an all-disabled race team who have the goal of competing in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race.
      Team BRIT drivers take on able-bodied racers on a level playing field.
      This is thanks to the world’s most advanced hand controls on the steering wheel — which enable disabled drivers to race competitively.

      HE’LL BE H-UG-E
      UGO UGOCHUKWU. Remember the name.
      The 15-year-old from New York was at Brands Hatch and won the British Formula 4 race on Sunday in tricky conditions.
      The American is part of the McLaren young driver programme and boss Zak Brown cheered him on.
      It was his maiden win after joining Carlin this season.

      Formula 1 giants McLaren to join Formula E next season after buying out Mercedes

      MCLAREN have announced they will join Formula E next season after agreeing to buy out Mercedes. The British team have been considering joining the the all-electric championship following their decision to expand into the Extreme E series this year.

      And after German manufacturer Mercedes announced last year they would be joining Audi and BMW in leaving Formula E , the Surrey-based team have decided to step in.
      McLaren CEO Zak Brown said: “McLaren Racing always seeks to compete against the best and on the leading edge of technology, providing our fans, partners and people with new ways to be excited, entertained and inspired. 
      “Formula E, like all our racing series, fulfils all those criteria.
      “It is also satisfying to provide a home for the class-leading Formula E team that Mercedes has built, which will become a fully-fledged part of the McLaren Racing family.
      “While run separately to our F1 and IndyCar teams, Formula E complements and builds out our EV racing programme alongside Extreme E.”
      Ian James, Team Principal of the Mercedes-EQ team, will continue to lead the team in orange next season with the buy out expected to be completed later this year.

      Formula E driver Oliver Rowland looking to kickstart his season at this weekend’s Berlin EPrix

      OLIVER ROWLAND is aiming to climb to the top of Formula E’s strong driver line-up by kick-starting his season at the Berlin EPrix. The Barnsley-born driver heads into this weekend’s double header with just four points after struggling since signing for Mahindra Racing this season. 
      Rowland crashed out in Monaco during the last race and has just four championship points from six races this season
      Mahindra had high hopes for Rowland but after crashing out in Monaco last month the British driver made it three consecutive DNFs and sits 16th in the Drivers’ Championship
      But with FIVE different winners from six races this season, Rowland believes the competitive nature of Formula E will allow him to bounce back sooner rather than later. 
      The 29-year-old said: “Formula E has always been extremely competitive.
      “The level of drivers is as good as anywhere in the world to be honest. You know that if you want to go and win a race, you have to be on absolute top form, especially with the new qualifying format.

      “The last three races we’ve had three DNFs, as well as the DNF in Round 1, so four DNF’s out of six races. It’s been pretty disappointing by any standards.
      “We’ve have had bad luck though. Monaco was clearly my fault, I was a bit over optimistic and misjudged it to be honest, I was easily at the inside and the move was kind of done. 
      “But in the first race in Riyadh, Robin Frijns hit the back of me when we were in sixth, and then the other two [in Rome] were also unfortunate.”
      Rowland has reason to feel confident heading to Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit after his sole Formula E victory came there in 2020.

      STOFFEL VANDOORNE is using last season’s Formula E heartbreak to fuel a championship charge. The Mercedes driver stormed to the top of the driver standings after picking up his first win of the season at the Monaco EPrix last week.

      FORMULA E believe they have opened the door to the “future’s future” after unveiling their new Gen3 car. The Gen3 will be introduced for Season 9 of the series and promises to be the fastest, lightest and most efficient electric racing car ever built. 
      The Gen3 car will be introduced from next season
      Power will be increased from this season’s 220Kw to 350kw (470BHP) with a top speed 200mph

      JEAN-ERIC VERGNE is lapping up the pressure of leading the Formula E Championship ahead of his home race in Monaco. The Frenchman is currently leading the Drivers Championship on 60 points despite failing to win a race this season. 
      Vergne currently leads the Formula E championship by two points ahead of the Monaco EPrix
      But with Formula E returning to the iconic street circuit in Monaco for a fifth time this weekend, the two-time Formula E champ is looking to extend his lead at the top.
      And with teammate Antonio Felix da Costa following up Vernge’s 2019 victory with another win last year, Monaco has been a happy hunting ground for DS Techeetah.

      Dennis is a versatile driver and spends HOURS in Red Bull’s simulator to help fine-tune Verstappen’s race car.
      Meanwhile, he is also out to win the Formula E title himself this season, after finishing third in the championship last year during his rookie campaign.
      Dennis, who will race in the Rome ePrix on 9 and 10 April, says he enjoys balancing his own racing commitments with working for Red Bull.

      “I didn’t really have too much racing going on myself and they needed a driver who had a bit of F1 experience.

      While Verstappen and Sergio Perez are at the GP circuit and limited to three hour-long practice sessions, Dennis is driving in a virtual version and makes set-up changes trying to hone the car and making it quicker.
      He added: “When they’re running in FP1 of FP2, I’ll be there at the factory just running alongside their programme or trying any test items which they want testing.
      “They’ll send it on the simulator first to get all the calculations and the driver’s feedback, and then they’ll make their decision on whether they should make it onto the real life car or not.
      “The simulator is seriously impressive and allows the team to really get an advantage over some of the other teams.

      “There are some days where I will be in the simulator from 9am until 6pm and other days where I am offering race support.”
      Although he was overlooked for drives in F1, Dennis has had plenty of success in his junior career and is now enjoying his time racing for Andretti in Formula E.
      He added: “Formula E is a completely different ballgame. Formula One is obviously massively advanced in terms of speed and just pure grit but what the drivers can actually do in the actual racecar is very limited.
      “Obviously, they’ll drive as fast as they can but in Formula E, the software is so far more advanced and it is more technically involved for a driver.

      “There is never ending development in trying to improve the battery and the technology itself.
      “I had a great season last year as a rookie, so it only makes sense to try and beat that.
      “In Formula E, generally the best man on the day wins and that means you need to push even harder, make the car even faster and drive even better.
      “So hopefully we have made some progress from the last race in Mexico and have a good result in Rome this weekend.”
      The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s most extensive calendar to date continues in Rome this weekend for a double-header on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April, with the Sunday race live on terrestrial television on Channel 4 from 13:30 BST.

      NEXT season will see Formula E introduce its ground-breaking Gen3 car – which promises to be the fastest, most powerful electric racing car.But that doesn’t mean this season’s car will not get an upgrade.

      Power will be boosted from 200 kW to 220kW for racing while the power during Attack Mode will also increase to 250kW from 235kW.
      The biggest shake up is the change to qualifying as the field is split into groups based on championship position.
      That will create a knock-out format pitching drivers against each other in a series of duels for pole position.
      Other tweaks will see races increased by up to 10 minutes if they have been impacted by safety cars or yellow flags.
      The calendar has also been swollen to 16 races with new ePrix races in Seoul and Jakarta.
      MERCEDES-EQ5: Stoffel Vandoorne (BEL), 17: Nyck de Vries (NLD)
      The reigning champions retain their successful pairing for season eight. De Vries clinched the title last year to become the first Dutch world champion before countryman Max Verstappen’s success in F1.
      Vandoorne will be in with a shout of snatching that title from his teammate this season.

      JAGUAR TCS RACING9: Mitch Evans (NZL), 10: Sam Bird (GBR)
      Jaguar enjoyed their most successful season in Formula E last season, finishing the team’s championship in second place.
      Mitch Evans and Sam Bird offer the team plenty of experience in development and race craft. Evans is now looking to beat Mercedes to the title.
      He said: “We’re looking for marginal gains but we’ve got a really strong package, a great team and we’re working well together. Hopefully we can go one better.”
      DS TECHEETAH13: Antonio Felix da Costa (POR), 25: Jean-Eric Vergne (FRA)
      One of the sport’s most successful teams had to settle for third in the championship in 2021 after a poor end to the season.
      They return this season with the same line up of double champion Jean-Eric Vergne and Antonio Felix da Costa, both have a lot of experience.
      ENVISION RACING 4: Robin Frijns (NDL), 37: Nick Cassidy (NZL)
      Despite not having the backing of a manufacturer, Envision Racing have always proved to be competitive.
      Back this year with an all-new green livery, they have an exciting line-up of  Robin Frijns and Nick Cassidy behind the wheel.

      AVALANCHE ANDRETTI FORMULA E 27: Jake Dennis (GBR), 28: Oliver Askew (USA)
      Jake Dennis produced one of the best performances from a rookie last season as he finished third in the championship.
      The 26-year-old Brit has a comprehensive CV having raced in lots of categories. He shares his time racing in Formula E with his duties as Red Bull Racing’s development driver.
      ROKiT VENTURI RACING 11: Lucas di Grassi (BRA), 48: Edoardo Mortara (CHE)
      Venturi have recruited former Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi this season to partner Edoardo Mortara.
      The Brazilian ended his seven year stint with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler after the manufacturer moved on at the end of Season 7. Di Grassi is one of the most knowledgeable drivers in FE.
      TAG HEUER PORSCHE FORMULA E TEAM 36: Andre Lotterer (DEU), 94: Pascal Wehrlein (DEU)
      Porsche are looking to make more improvements in season eight as they stick with Andre Lotterer and Pascal Wehrlein in an all-German line-up.
      Porsche made a few mistakes in their debut season and should be much stronger this time around.

      MAHINDRA RACING29: Alexander Sims (GBR), 30: Oliver Rowland (GBR)
      An all-British line up for Mahindra, who were much-improved in 2021. Alex Lynn’s win in London was the highlight, but he departs and another Brit in Oliver Rowland now partners Alexander Sims.
      Sims has a race win and podiums to his name in Formula E, and Rowland joins the team having made the move from Nissan e.dams.
      NISSAN E.DAMS22: Maximilian Guenther (DEU), 23: Sebastien Buemi (CHE)
      Nissan e.dams have replaced Oliver Rowland with the highly-rated Maximilian Guenther.
      The rapid German brokered a deal to join the Franco-Japanese team when a seat became available and with wins to his name, he’s proven himself in battle. He joins one of the most experienced drivers on the grid in Sebastian Buemi.

      DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT99: Antonio Giovinazzi (ITA), 7: Sergio Sette Camara (BRA)
      Dragon pulled off a real surprise to land Antonio Giovinazzi, the Italian F1 driver from Alfa Romeo.
      He has some work to do to get up to speed with the complexities of FE, but has bags of tallent. Sergio Sette Camara goes into his second FE season looking to build on his performances last year.
      NIO 333 Racing3: Oliver Turvey (GBR), 33: Dan Ticktum (GBR)
      Another British pairing and one that has potential to cause an upset – in more ways than one. Oliver Turvey is the stalwart while Dan Ticktum is the third and final rookie on the grid.
      The Brit is a Formula 2 race winner and has worked in F1 with Red Bull and Williams – but he is also not short of controversy or opinions – which is brilliant for FE. More
