Cristiano Ronaldo scores first Man Utd hat-trick since January 2008 to break incredible Fifa goalscoring record

CRISTIANO RONALDO scored a brilliant hat-trick and set an incredible goalscoring record as Manchester United sunk Tottenham. The Portuguese superstar added his 805th, 806th and 807th goals in the 3-2 win to move past Josef Bican in Fifa’s official goals list.

The striker, left out of the derby defeat to Man City last week, was at his very best to earn United a much-needed three points.
It was only his second ever hat-trick for the Red Devils and his first since his treble in a 6-0 win over Newcastle United in January 2008.
Ronaldo, who came into the game with just one goal in his previous 10 games, opened the scoring with a brilliant rocket into the top corner – the ball flying past a helpless Hugo Lloris after just 12 minutes.
The goal was made possible by Fred whose clever flick deceived Rodrigo Bentancur and found Ronaldo in acres of space.

Spurs equalised through a Harry Kane penalty but Ronaldo levelled just three minutes later, latching onto a Jadon Sancho cross and sliding home from close range.
United looked to be cruising but Harry Maguire turned into his own net to draw Spurs level once again.
But with just ten minutes left on the clock, Ronaldo proved once again why he is one of the greatest players ever.
From a United corner, the 37-year-old icon leapt higher than anyone else to power in a brilliant header and earn United all three points.

His treble, the 59th of his career, also made him the second oldest hat-trick scorer in a Premier League game, at 37 years and 35 days, behind only Teddy Sheringham (37 years, 146 days) when he scored three against Bolton for Portsmouth in August 2003.
Incredibly, Ronaldo’s expected goals (xG) for the game came in at just 0.85.
It was a crucial win for United, who had to win to keep hold of any hopes of finishing in a top four spot.
The 3-2 victory moves them into fourth, two points ahead of Arsenal – but having played FOUR more games than the Gunners.
CR7 was at his incredible best against a hapless Tottenham backline, after a tumultuous week in which he has been linked with a move away from United.
Last weekend, Ralf Rangnick planned to leave Ronaldo on the bench for the Manchester derby.
Ronaldo, who had a minor hip injury, promptly refused to play and flew to Portugal instead – placing huge doubt on his United future.

His strike also likely brought a smile to the face of another ‘GOAT’ – NFL legend Tom Brady, who was in attendance at Old Trafford.
The legendary quarterback tweeted before the match that he hoped for a United win.
His second wish of a Kane goal also came to fruition and with United regaining their lead Brady was likely delighted at half-time.
Recently retired Brady, 43, is an idol of Kane’s and the pair have been friends for several years.
The American even wished the England captain good luck ahead of The Three Lions’ campaign in the 2018 World Cup. More

Man Utd 3 Tottenham 2: Cristiano Ronaldo steals show with stunning hat-trick on return to first-team after derby strop

CRISTIANO RONALDO showed an NFL legend who’s the MVP.Seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady came to Old Trafford billing the match as a showdown between his pal and gridiron fan, Harry Kane, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Brady’s fellow sporting icon won that individual duel convincingly and decided the match with a brilliant hat-trick.
A week after missing the miserable Manchester derby defeat with an alleged hip injury that befits an elder statesman, Ronaldo rolled back the years.
Just when hapless Harry Maguire’s own goal seemed to have condemned United to a morale-sapping draw, the 37-year-old produced a trademark header to complete his 59th career hat-trick and put his team in front for the third, decisive time.
He was substituted moments later, “Viva Ronaldo” swept around the stands in wave after wave and all was well with the world.

Unless you were Antonio Conte and Tottenham.
They had the chances to take at least a point from a game that had the potential to provide either side with momentum for a Champions League charge.
When the Chelsea crisis unwinds, both United and Tottenham may find their longer-term prospects of success – whatever that is – enhanced by default.
But for this season, tucking in behind the Blues in fourth place is surely the most either can dream of achieving.

And that now looks a much more remote prospect for Tottenham now.
Perhaps missing out on Conte was not such a big mistake by United after all.
The Italian has a system and he drills his teams until they probably hear his voice in their sleep.
But it only works if you concentrate and there were signs even before Ronaldo’s spectacular opener that Spurs lacked that edge.
The visitors looked comfortable enough in the very early stages, retreating into a 5-4-1 out of possession and challenging United to break them down.
Which they did when Cristian Romero misjudged a diagonal pass by Maguire.
Jadon Sancho collected and when Ronaldo’s shot hit Eric Dier’s hand, he and most of Old Trafford screamed for a penalty.
Nothing doing then, but some more iffy defending was soon punished.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a brilliant 25-yard rocket into the top cornerCredit: Getty
Fred took an over-committed Rodrigo Bentancur out of the game with a neat flick from Raphael Varane’s pass and Ronaldo was left with way too much time and room nearly 30 yards out.
For two decades, such a sight has produced not just excitement but expectation.
Not so much this season, though, on his second coming to United.
    This time it happened.
Dier backed off, the veteran striker let rip and Hugo Lloris was beaten, perhaps a bit too easily.
But it was still a brilliant strike, arrowing like a Brady pass into the endzone.
It did not prove to be the platform for United to take control.
Diogo Dalot had to nod an Eric Dier header off the line following a corner and Nemanja Matic produced a well-timed block on Bentancur’s shot.
Ronaldo put United back in front from close rangeCredit: Reuters
Spurs were enjoying plenty of joy down their right. Kulusevski broke through two weak challenges and his cross was stopped by Alex Telles’ arm.
The conviction of referee Jon Moss’ decision was matched by Kane’s conversion from 12 yards.
    But lads, it’s Spurs.
While Conte muttered something in Italian about keeping it tight until half-time, United scored from their next proper attack.
As VAR Andre Marriner went on to confirm, Sergio Reguilon played Jadon Sancho onside from Matic’s ball over the top and the England winger put it on a plate for that man again.
Kane fancied himself to draw level – too much.
If he had left Reguilon’s cross for the onrushing and onside Matt Doherty, Spurs might have gone into the break level.
And even if the England captain had headed it in, VAR would have ruled it out for offside.
Ronaldo’s hat-trick came with a sensational headerCredit: Reuters
Spurs and Kulusevski were back in behind the United defence straight after the break.
There were more goals in this, for sure, and Tottenham seemed the more likely to score them.
Son should have made it 2-2 just past the hour mark.
Again Kulusevski engineered space for a run and cross down the right, and the South Korean should have at least put his shot on target.
Ronaldo stung Lloris’ hands from an angle that not even he was ever likely to score from but that was it for United threat.
The second equaliser was coming, even if the source was unexpected.
Well, kind of unexpected, but Maguire is having that kind of season.
Spurs attacked down the left channel this time, but Reguilon’s cross was heading only for an offside team-mate until the United captain contrived to divert it past De Gea.
Maguire had otherwise been solid in front of the watching Gareth Southgate, but this was yet another moment to forget.
Ronaldo, his alleged rival for the United armband, saved his bacon.

Man Utd ratings: Anthony Elanga excites but Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo wasteful in frustrating Watford draw

MANCHESTER UNITED huffed and puffed but just could not breakdown a stubborn Watford. And it was not for a lack of trying with the Red Devils having 22 attempts, though only three shots were on target.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Elanga were guilty of missing the best chances as United somehow failed to get all three points.
Elanga was dangerous throughout and should have had an assist inside five minutes but Ronaldo hit the post.
CR7 was so wasteful for a man of his talents and was most to blame for the Red Devils not picking up a win.
Here is how Kealan Hughes rated a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford.
    David De Gea – 6
Did not have a lot to do with Watford producing just two shots on target all game.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5
Recalled to the side and looked solid without doing much going forward, which is likely the reason he was dropped in the first place.
Watford began to exploit United’s right flank late on with Ismaila Sarr causing problems.
    Victor Lindelof – 7
Another accomplished display from the Swede in his natural position after playing right-back against Atletico Madrid.
    Raphael Varane – 7
Was comfortable although Watford did not offer much in attack for 80 minutes.
Dealt with a lively Emmanuel Dennis who has 14 goal contributions this season.
    Alex Telles – 6
Got forward well playing one pinpoint cross Ronaldo tapped in only to be ruled offside.
    Fred – 5
Was not as effective as he was in Madrid in mid-week with United bossing possession.
Was rightly hooked on the hour with United in search of a goal.
Anthony Elanga impressed with his direct running and passing abilityCredit: Reuters
Paul Pogba missed chances but looked threatening in a more attacking roleCredit: AFP
    Nemanja Matic – 6
The midfielder does not start many games but he gave United control throughout and was effective with his passing and dribbling.
It was not a coincidence that Watford began to threaten more once he went off and Rangnick will likely regret taking him off.
    Anthony Elanga – 8
The Watford defence could not handle his speed and direct running on the ball – was unlucky to not be awarded a penalty when Craig Cathcart collided with him in the box.
He was dangerous across the attack as he was given the freedom to roam and he created chances too with intricate passes.
But he was guilty of arguably the worst miss of the match after being played in by Pogba, blasting wide when there was plenty of space to Ben Foster’s right.
    Paul Pogba – 7
Played in a more advanced role and it suited him well with one beautiful flick creating a great chance for Elanga.
He also could have scored but blasted wide when he found space in the box and also failed to connect with a header which could have been goalbound if he did.
    Bruno Fernandes – 6
Looked dangerous again for a second successive home game but once again missed easy chances.
He volleyed miles wide from close range before heading over after Foster had lost his bearings in the Watford goal.
    Cristiano Ronaldo – 4
Missed a big chance early on when he hit the post from close range after being played in by Elanga.
Later had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half but he strayed needlessly beyond the last defender and a man of his experience and ability should know better.
His poor finishing continued in the second half as he shot straight at a Watford defender with the goal gaping.
    Subs
    Jadon Sancho (for Fred, 62′) – 5
Failed to make the desire impact with United arguably looking more threatening with Fred in the team.
One long-range curling effort that went over the bar.
    Luke Shaw (for Telles, 74′) – 5
A fairly anonymous display though he was not given a lot of time to make a difference from left-back.
    Marcus Rashford (for Matic, 74′) – 4
Like Sancho, he did not impact the match with Watford finishing the last ten minutes stronger than United. More

Spanish and German champions Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are said to be interested in acquiring the 21-year-old’s services.
But the duo will reportedly face competition for his services from the Gunners, who are looking to bring in more defensive reinforcements.
The Sunday Mirror claims Mikel Arteta wants to sign Aarons as a replacement for Hector Bellerin, who is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks.
Aarons broke into Norwich’s first team in the 2018-19 season, making 43 appearances and scoring three goals in his maiden campaign for the then Championship side.
The youngster has made a further 87 appearances for the Canaries, scoring two goals and providing five assists for Daniel Farke’s side.
Farke is eager to hold on to Aarons but admits he could end up leaving East Anglia.
I am quite confident we can keep himDaniel Farke on Max Aarons
Speaking after Norwich’s pre-season win over Kings Lynn on Friday, he said: “We are happy with Max.
“But in this business, you can never say never.
“I am quite confident we can keep him. We have a great group, a great spirit. I am quite pleased with our business so far.
“All the lads we have signed will improve our squad. So compliments to Stuart (Webber).
“In each and every area we must strengthen if we can. Centre back is one area, another full-back option, in central midfield four have left with and we have brought in two with (Pierre) Lees-Melou and (Billy) Gilmour, so that is somewhere we can strengthen.
“Also up front. I think the only area we are not looking for players is goalkeeper.

Alongside a video of himself wearing a wig and listening to Wonderwall, he wrote: “Maybe you going to win it when I’m ninetyyyyy and after all you’re my noisy neighbourrrrr @themightyi @liamgallagher @oasis.
Scotland will kick off their Euro 2020 campaign at Hampden Park on Monday afternoon, taking on the Czech Republic.
And former Scots boss Craig Brown has tipped Steve Clarke’s side to win the tournament.
He told Sky Sports: “We don’t care how we qualified – we are there.

“I think we have got a team that is capable of getting us the full distance, honestly.
“I’m not being daft or patriotic – I’m genuinely optimistic we can go the distance here and we have every capability in that team.
“When I see other countries that have won it – Portugal won it without winning a group game, Greece won it.
“Way back in 1992, Denmark won it. They came from nowhere.
“It is possible for someone else, not a big, high-profile team, to win it, and I think Scotland have a chance this time.” More

Tuchel sweating on Mason Mount injury scare ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final second-leg vs Real Madrid

CHELSEA boss Thomas Tuchel is not sure whether Mason Mount will be fit enough to play in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.Mount, who put together another impressive display for the Blues, was hauled off in the closing stages of Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham at Stamford Bridge after picking up an apparent back injury.

The midfielder was in visible discomfort when he landed badly onto his back after a collision with Mario Lemina.
Chelsea manager Tuchel discussed the England international’s injury after full-time and admitted he doesn’t know whether he will be available for the crunch clash with Real at Stamford Bridge.
The German manager said: “I hope really that Mason is not a big thing and hopefully he can fully recover for Real Madrid.
“It was my decision, there was not any doctor or physio who told me to take him off.

“But I saw him landing hard and it was the moment anyway when we wanted to take him off anyway.
“I saw him holding his back slightly, so we didn’t want to take any risks but I have no other information on that. He has the full package, mentally, in terms of talent and physically.
“And the most important part is his character, he has his feet on the ground and he’s a nice guy. He comes to Cobham every day to learn something new and have new experiences.
“He is the guy who can recover very fast, he’s a very physical player and is fully adapted to Premier League football. He has big self-confidence in a very, very positive way.

“It’s a pleasure to have him, be at his side and guide him and support him. It’s impressive, he’s not affected by all the praise.
“This is maybe the most important part. He seems to be a guy who likes the sport, and feels an obligation to make the most out of it. And he wants it absolutely badly, so it’s a top mix.”
Chelsea have a good chance of advancing to the Champions League final after drawing 1-1 with Real in the first leg where Christian Pulisic scored an away goal before Karim Benzema’s equaliser.
