Man Utd and Liverpool were the ‘real founders’ of the controversial European Super League, insists Barcelona chief

BARCELONA chief Joan Laporta claims Manchester United and Liverpool were the ‘real founders’ of the controversial European Super League. The football world was stunned in April when 12 of the continent’s top clubs – including the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ – announced they were forming a breakaway division.
Barcelona chief Joan Laporta claims Man Utd were one of the chief European Super League orchestratorsCredit: PA
Laporta also says Liverpool was one of the ‘real founders’ of the controversial ESLCredit: PA
The closed-shop project would have replaced the Champions League and guaranteed annual participation for its ‘Dirty Dozen’ founders.
However, a furious fan backlash prompted nine members to swiftly withdraw, leaving just Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus in the ESL.
But despite looking like one of the main guilty parties, Barcelona president Laporta insists that English giants United and Liverpool were the original orchestrators of the ESL.
Laporta claimed: “Liverpool and United were the real founders of the Super League.
“Uefa threatened and was demagogic. The clubs have still not paid the compensation for leaving.
“The Super League project is alive. It will be the most attractive competition in the world, and it will be based on meritocracy and solidarity.”
Laporta also took time to lift the lid on Barcelona’s woeful financial situation.
But he is confident top earner Lionel Messi will sign a new contract, with the Argentine’s current deal expiring at the end of the month.

Laporta added: “The club is worse than I expected, and I expected it to be in a difficult situation.
“There are some contracts that greatly limit us. There are things that will have to be explained and I won’t rule out any measures.
“The same people always appear in the contracts. We have found ourselves with a squad with out-of-date salaries and we will have to juggle.
“Existing contracts can be changed or restructured, and then there are drastic measures that we would not like to have to take. Nothing is ruled out for the good of Barcelona.
“Between salaries and amortisations we have a figure of 650million euros, which is more than the club’s income. These salaries are out of date.
“I would like Messi to say yes as soon as possible, it would help us in every way.
“We are in communication, day in and day out. He’s excited and I’m grateful for the desire he’s showing to stay.”

All six Prem rebels who joined European Super League ‘yet to formally leave’ and hated competition ‘WILL relaunch’

NONE of the six Premier League clubs who joined the European Super League have officially left. And the despised renegade competition is reportedly still set to relaunch.

Both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all told furious fans they were pulling out of the ESL in April after its launch flopped in spectacular fashion.
But all six clubs remain co-owners and shareholders of a holding company in Spain with their fellow plotters from France, Italy and Spain, according to the Sunday Times.
Sources from ‘several’ of the clubs are cited as acknowledging they are still part of the European Super League Company but said they are ‘determined to leave’.
And two other ‘senior’ sources close to the venture are quoted as saying ‘there is no mechanism’ for them to withdraw and the league is ‘waiting to be relaunched in modified form’.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Inter and AC Milan complete the 12 original unscrupulous clubs.
All of them are said to have to agreed to ‘dissolve the entity’ with any individual departing party facing ‘unlimited fines’.
Organisers reportedly believe the current financial crisis the football world is facing means an amended version of the ESL is inevitable.
A Times source said: “The owners know this is not the end — it’s just the beginning. We will resume dialogue, whether this year or next year. It’s just financial gravity. Football can’t survive in its current form.”

Real president Florentino Perez said the clubs have a ‘binding contract’.
Although his team, along with Barcelona and Juventus, are yet to publicly abandon the prospect of joining.
Arsenal said: “We have been absolutely clear we are withdrawing from the ESL. This is subject to a legal process which is under way.”
Manchester United said: “The club has no intention to revisit the Super League concept. Any suggestion otherwise is simply an attempt to mislead our fans.”
The Premier League clubs face up to 30-point deductions if they sign up to any future Super League.
And Real, Barca and Juve WILL play the Champions League next season after Uefa were forced to suspend planned sanctions.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus WILL play Champions League next season as Uefa halt ESL disciplinary proceedings

UEFA have suspended their disciplinary investigation into Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus following a Swiss court warning. The trio looked set to be handed a severe punishment for their role in the European Super League breakaway plot.

That could have seen them banned from next season’s Champions League – but any sanctions have been put on hold.
Uefa confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that they will attempt to restart the proceedings in due course.
It read: “Following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid for a potential violation of Uefa’s legal framework in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project, the Uefa Appeals Body has decided to stay the proceedings until further notice.
“Uefa understands why the disciplinary proceedings needed to be suspended for the time being, but remains confident in and will continue to defend its position in all the relevant jurisdictions.
“Uefa will take all necessary steps in strict accordance with national and EU law in order for the Uefa Appeals Body to be in a position to resume the disciplinary proceedings as soon as possible.”
Earlier this week, reports in Spain detailed a warning from the Swiss Justice Ministry against Nyon-based Uefa taking action on the trio.

Those involved claim a court ruling in Madrid legitimised the ESL bid and the judge responsible is said to be looking for the European Court of Justice to back the judgement.
There is a fear that anti-monopoly laws would mean any punishment is revoked on appeal.
Nevertheless, Uefa have already obtained an apology and reduced the prize money of the other nine clubs involved in April’s debacle.

The six Premier League clubs, plus Inter Milan, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have all formally apologised and accepted a five per cent cut in prize money for next season – worth as much as £6million.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City settled the issue with the Prem on Wednesday.
Each club will pay a £3.6m fine for their role in the plot – with a further £25m and 30 points lost if they do it again.

Premier League Big Six face 30-POINT deductions if they sign up to any future rebel European Super League

THE Big Six have accepted Prem fines of just over £3.6m each for their part in the breakaway plot. But Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and the two Manchester giants have agreed they would face £25m fines AND 30-point deductions if they joined any future rebel scheme.
The six clubs involved in proposals to form a European Super League have today acknowledged once again that their actions were a mistake, and have reconfirmed their commitment to the Premier League and the future of the English game#PL and @FA statement: https://t.co/8b8ZdFIy49 pic.twitter.com/lLqbu6qHT1— Premier League Communications (@PLComms) June 9, 2021

The decision, likely to be fiercely contested by the 14 clubs left out of the coup attempt, is League chief Richard Masters’ attempt to draw a line under the debacle.
Masters, who enlisted the backing of PM Boris Johnson to help foil the breakaway in the space of 48 tumultuous hours, dismissed all calls for points deductions for the Six.
He also recognises that, for all their plotting, the Big Six remain the driving force of the Prem’s global success story.
And by getting them to sign up to future draconian penalties, Masters and fellow League bosses believe they have put the Super League genie back in the bottle for ever.
The punishment, due to be confirmed later today, comes as part of a package put together by the Prem and the FA.
It also follows the Big Six agreeing to accept Uefa’s punishment for their parts in the abortive plot.
All six accepted up-front Uefa fines of £1.44m, plus five per cent – potentially a further £6m – of their next season’s earning from the Champions League, Europa League or, in the case of Tottenham,  Europa Conference League.
In addition, they agreed to pay a staggering further fine of £87m if they joined any future breakaway, or £43.5m if they merely committed to any such new league.

It has been claimed that the three sides could face a two-year ban from the Champions League as a result.

Though Uefa issued a stern response vowing to defend their position ‘robustly’.

The governing body had threatened three clubs – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – who all refused to renounce it.
The trio all claimed Uefa had violated European Union competition law in seeking to block it.
However, Uefa have now released a statement vowing to defend their position ‘robustly’.
It read: “Uefa takes note of the announcement by the European Court of Justice of the referral from a Madrid court on the so-called European Super League, notwithstanding the withdrawal of nine of its founding member clubs.
“Uefa is confident in its position and will defend it robustly.”
Back on April 18, twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs announced they had formed a new competition.
Within hours they had informed Uefa and Fifa of measures the Super League had taken preemptively to block any challenges to its foundation.
But the league had effectively collapsed within 72 hours as the founder clubs withdrew one by one, starting with the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’.

Nine of the clubs entered a new peace deal on May 7 with Uefa following huge fan protests against the proposed breakaway,
But the three clubs who have not renounced the Super League face sanctions after disciplinary proceedings were opened on May 25.
The trio issued a joint statement the following day, describing the disciplinary action as ‘incomprehensible’ and that football faced an ‘inevitable downfall’ without major reform.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus slam Uefa and claim football is heading for ‘inevitable downfall’ after ESL flop

THE three remaining rebel clubs from the aborted European Super League project have hit back after Uefa launched disciplinary proceedings against them.Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus claim the European governing body’s actions – which could lead to their expulsion from the Champions League – are ‘incomprehensible’ and risk causing football’s ‘inevitable downfall’.

The three clubs insist they are still committed to the controversial breakaway Super League, which caused fury when launched last month and all-but collapsed within 48 hours.
The other nine teams involved, including six from the Premier League, withdrew following a huge backlash from across the sporting and political spectrum.
Those nine clubs have since accepted financial sanctions from Uefa and restated their commitment to the governing body and its competitions.
With the other three still to back down, Uefa announced on Tuesday they could face charges for violating Uefas legal framework. The maximum sanction available to them would be to exclude the clubs from European competition.
The rebel clubs say Uefa should not have taken such action while the matter is still subject to legal proceedings they initiated to try to prevent the Super League being stopped.
They took the matter to a commercial court in Madrid, which has referred it to the European Court of Justice.
A statement issued by the clubs read: “FC Barcelona, Juventus FC and Real Madrid CF wish to express their absolute rejection of the insistent coercion that Uefa has been maintaining towards three of the most relevant institutions in the history of football.
“This alarming attitude constitutes a flagrant breach of the decision of the courts of justice, which have already made a clear statement warning Uefa to refrain from taking any action that could penalise the founding clubs of the Super League while the legal proceedings are ongoing.

“Therefore, the opening of disciplinary proceedings by Uefa is incomprehensible and is a direct attack against the rule of law that we, the citizens of the European Union, have democratically built up, while constituting a lack of respect toward the authority of the courts of justice themselves.”
The clubs claim they were acting in the best interests of the game in pursuing the Super League and want further discussions.
The statement added: “From the beginning, the Super League has been promoted with the aim of improving the situation of European football, through permanent dialogue with Uefa and with the objective to increase the interest in the sport and to offer fans the best possible show.
“This objective has to be achieved in a framework of sustainability and solidarity, especially in a precarious economic situation such as the one many clubs in Europe are currently experiencing.
“Instead of exploring ways of modernising football through open dialogue, Uefa expects us to withdraw the ongoing court proceedings that question their monopoly over European football.
“Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, all of them more than a century old, will not accept any form of coercion or intolerable pressure, while they remain strong in their willingness to debate, respectfully and through dialogue, the urgent solutions that football currently needs.
“Either we reform football or we will have to watch its inevitable downfall.”

Unlike the Prem Big Six, the two Milan sides and Atletico Madrid, the three clubs have refused to pull the plug on their scheme.
That has infuriated Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin.
He is out for revenge and wants to impose two season bans.
And now that prospect had moved a step closer after Uefa announced its first move.
In a statement, Nyon officials said: “Following an investigation conducted by UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework.
“Further information will be made available in due course.”

Lineker has also put his name on the proposal for an independent regulatorCredit: PA:Press Association
They hope to persuade former Sports minister Tracey Crouch to recommend the appointment of an all-powerful regulator as part of her “fan-led review” of the game.
The letter, also signed by other media figures and supporter groups, states that “as football fans, we were appalled by the attempt to set up a European Super League”.
They add: “It was a direct threat to the integrity of the game; destroying the concept of sporting merit and open competition.
“Supporters came together with one voice to oppose the cynical power-grab by a group of wealthy owners.
“The furious protests were heard and the breakaway fell apart.
“Now we must make sure this never happens again.
“Without swift and direct intervention, the return of a European Super League will be a constant threat.
