Man Utd are in centre of another domestic violence storm with Antony’s police probe the latest headache for club

MANCHESTER UNITED could have been forgiven for breathing a sigh of relief just before 11pm on Friday. That was the time when Mason Greenwood’s loan move to Spanish club Getafe was confirmed.

And while he remains on the Old Trafford payroll, the young forward is somebody else’s problem — for the next few months at least.
Yet there was little time for anyone at United to get too comfortable.
Because another major headache was lurking just around the corner — as often seems to be the case with this club.
Some United supporters might have thought the 3-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Arsenal on Sunday was bad enough.

Then it was compounded by a public ding dong between boss Erik ten Hag and £73million England man Jadon Sancho over his omission from the squad.
Yet as it turned out, that was nothing.
Just hours later, it got worse still as United found themselves at the centre of another domestic violence storm.
On Monday, it emerged that Brazil winger Antony was being investigated by police in both Manchester and Sao Paulo.

His former partner, Gabriela Cavallin, first made accusations against him in June — but has now published new ones in her homeland.
She claims the 23-year-old had threatened her while she was pregnant, damaged her breast implant, cut her finger with a glass and threatened to throw her out of a speeding car.
Meanwhile, the former Ajax star released a statement on his social media later that day strongly refuting the latest accusations.
Antony acknowledged that the relationship had been “tumultuous” with many verbal rows — but said suggestions of physical aggression were not true.
Despite his confidence the police investigations would reveal he was innocent, he found himself dropped by his national team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.
In the following 24 hours there were growing calls from domestic violence charities for United to take action themselves.
One of those came from Countdown presenter and long-standing Red Devils fan Rachel Riley — who had also spoken out strongly about her club’s handling of Greenwood.
She described the alleged incidents as ‘heinous’ and called for domestic abuse experts to be involved in any decision-making at the club.
Meanwhile, Andrea Simon, director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition told United ‘the world is watching’ how they handled the situation.
The club finally released a statement yesterday morning and insisted they are taking the matter seriously.
But they are waiting for the police investigations on both sides of the Atlantic to be concluded before they decide on a course of action.
At the moment, the only evidence out there comes from Cavallin — and her version of events has been strongly rebuffed by Antony.
Currently there is no internal probe being carried out and the feeling at United is that he is innocent until proven guilty.
But United sources say they have learnt lessons from the criticism they got over their handling of the Greenwood case.
They have also taken external advice from the PFA and Women’s Aid — and have pledged to co- operate fully with police enquiries.
Greenwood was only suspended by the club following his arrest in January last year — and, as yet, Antony has not been charged with anything.
So as things stand, the club have resisted calls to suspend the Brazil winger and — in theory at least — he will be available for selection when Ten Hag’s men return to action in nine days.

The hope will be that he is cleared of any wrongdoing in the meantime and be ready to face Brighton at Old Trafford.
Yet it remains to be seen how being at the centre of such damaging allegations will affect a player who has struggled to justify his huge price-tag since he arrived in Manchester last summer. More

She shared a string of shocking text messages which she claims Antony sent, showing a vile spew of hatred she regularly received.
He allegedly told Gabriela that he “hopes she dies” and branded her “disgusting” and “deceitful” after she ignored his calls and texts.
The DJ and influencer also went public with pictures of her injuries while revealing horror details of the alleged attacks she suffered.
She claimed Antony punched and headbutted her, as well as threatening to crash their car after she tried to end their relationship.

Gabriela alleged that her finger was also cut to the bone and that the footballer attacked her while she was pregnant.
A total of four alleged attacks are described in a police report seen by respected sports news site ESPN.
Antony has denied assaulting Gabriela Cavallin and vowed to clear his name after being quizzed by cops in Brazil.
He added that his relationship with Gabriela was “tumultuous” but claims it never resulted in violence.

The star has been axed from the national squad and replaced by Gabriel Jesus ahead of this month’s two World Cup qualifiers.
Gabriela has now shared further harrowing details of the alleged abuse in an interview with Brazilian media outlet UOL, one of the South American country’s largest news providers.
    BREAST IMPLANT
Gabriela claims that she was forced to undergo surgery to fix her silicone breast implants after Antony attacked her in January.
She alleged that the “jealous” star erupted in anger during an argument about one of her former flames from “years ago”.
The DJ explained: “He was very jealous of famous people I had already been with. It doesn’t matter if it was ten years ago or yesterday.
“He didn’t have this notion of time and space, it seems.”
Antony is alleged to have punched her in the chest, causing her breast implant to “turn over” and dangerously displacing it.
Gabriela claims the Brazil World Cup ace also cut her head after his watch collided with it as he wrestled with her.
She said she was forced to fly back to Brazil for an operation to change her implants and remedy the issue in wake of the incident.
The 23-year-old claimed Antony insisted he “didn’t mean to hurt her” and that her injury was caused “by accident.”
    NEYMAR ROW
The same month, the former couple are alleged to have had an explosive row over fellow Brazilian footballer Neymar.
Gabriela claims that Antony accused her of liking the Paris Saint-Germain star’s photos on social media, which she denied.
She explained that she had actually liked a number of posts that Neymar’s pal and her “mutual friend” Gil Cebola had shared online.
The Brazilian beauty said: “I didn’t like photos of Neymar. Gil posted a photo with Neymar and a few other people, and I liked it.
“That was four years ago. I didn’t even know Antony existed at that time. But Antony kept looking, you know?
“He would go on people’s Instagram and look for old photos to see if I had liked them. If I had commented.
“After I met Antony, I never liked anyone’s photo again. I didn’t even speak to anyone, neither Gil nor Neymar. Anything.”
    SMASHED UP HOUSE
The DJ, who has been separated from Antony since May, says she decided to put an end to the relationship after one of the most violent episodes she says she has faced.
After a fight at home, Antony allegedly threw a glass at her, seriously injuring the fingers of her hand, while hurling threats and insults.
Gabriela claims she was scared for her life after her ex began smashing up items, locked the door to their home and refused to let her leave.
She said: “He broke all my things. He took my passport. His mother and stepfather even trapped him inside the football court in the living room, surrounded by a fence, as if it were a fence.
“He was upset, trying to get out of the court in any way, throwing a football at me. Playing cell phones on me.
“He said he was going to kill me, that I had destroyed his life. After that day, I said ‘enough’.”
Gabriela said that Antony’s “wonderful” physiotherapist managed to convince the footie star to let her leave and go to the hospital.
The influencer, who has nearly 500,000 Instagram followers, says she has been unable to get surgery to fix her fingers due to the ongoing legal proceedings in Brazil and the UK.
    VIOLENT THREATS
Gabriela explained she discovered she was carrying Antony’s child in May last year, two months before the alleged abuse began.
She claims the Man U winger first attacked her at a nightclub in São Paulo last July, when she was around 17 weeks pregnant with his baby.
Antony allegedly dragged her out by the arm and hair then pushed her into a car after she ended their romance.
After being shunted into the vehicle, she claims he “tried to crash the car” and threatened to kill himself if she left him.
“He said things like that, if I weren’t going to be with him, I wouldn’t be with anyone, that I was pregnant with his child,” Gabriela said.
She claimed he was speeding down a motorway in the rain at a whopping 124mph, while she pleaded with him to slow down.
Antony is said to have eventually stopped the vehicle before running off into the night, with Gabriela and a pal chasing after him.
“We found him lying on the sidewalk, crying. Too crazy. One minute he was crying, one minute he was hitting me,” she alleged.
Gabriella said she woke the next day to find she was excessively bleeding and spent three days in hospital as a result.
Antony allegedly told her that “it wasn’t him, that it was a moment of anger, that he himself got it into his head that he hadn’t done it.”
She continued: “I said: ‘But did you try to crash the car?’.
“Then he said: ‘It’s not like I was going to crash the car, I just moved the steering wheel a little’.
“I said, ‘You slapped me. Him: I didn’t slap you, I went to hold you, what did you do?'”
Gabriela says she felt “obligated” to forgive him as she feared he would hurt himself and because she “didn’t want to be alone” during her pregnancy.
In July, Gabriela shared on social media that she had suffered a miscarriage. The baby boy would have been named Luca Mateo.
    ABUSE WORSENED
Following his transfer from Ajax to the Red Devils, Antony’s alleged violent outbursts are alleged to have worsened.
Gabriela claims despite moving from Amsterdam to Manchester for a fresh start, the 23-year-old became “more aggressive and impatient”.
She believes Antony was crumbling under the pressure of the club’s high expectations, prompting him to start “really stupid fights, sometimes for no reason”.
The DJ said: “I believe it was due to problems he had at his new club [Manchester United].
“He wasn’t delivering as much as people were expecting from him. He didn’t talk much, he didn’t express what he was feeling, you know?
“The attacks were external. Objects, things from home, room, and after a while, in February, it started to be me.”
    Read More on The Sun
Gabriela claimed he was triggered by her moving to another room to take a phone call, if “someone liked her photo”, or if she simply went to the bathroom alone.
“If I went to a party with him, greeted someone, he wanted to hit me. I couldn’t go out without him anymore,” she alleged.

Antony denies all allegations and has vowed to clear his name.
Cavallin alleges she was verbally and physically abused by the footballer, claiming he left her with a sliced finger and attacked her while she was pregnant.
“Is anyone doing any due diligence on these players?” Riley wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Heinous stuff described in these accusations.”

“This time domestic abuse experts need to be involved in the club’s processes.”
A spokesman for Manchester United said the club does not have any comment.
GMP said in a statement on Monday on Antony: “Greater Manchester Police is aware of the allegations made and enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this report.
“We will not be commenting any further at this time.”
On Monday, Gabriela hit back with a formal letter on Instagram as cops carry on an investigation in her native São Paulo, Brazil.
The influencer and DJ’s statement comes after Antony released his own lengthy statement on Instagram, admitting he had a “tumultuous” relationship with Gabriela.
She says she dated the World Cup ace on and off for two years and lived with him in Amsterdam while he played for Ajax.
The 23-year-old claims the first assault came at a nightclub in São Paulo last July when she was around 17 weeks pregnant with his baby.
Gabriela, who has nearly 500,000 Instagram followers, published a letter issued by her legal team.
It read: “Gabriela Cavallin’s defence, in view of the facts and evidence that became public knowledge on this date, regarding the repeated episodes of aggression suffered by her, informs that she trusts the serious and competent investigation by the Civil Police of São Paulo.
“[And] hopes that, as such, once completed, the aggressor will be prosecuted and punished for the crimes he committed.”
A statement from Antony was published just hours later, where he said he felt “obliged” to break his silence “out of respect for my fans, friends and family”.
The 23-year-old footballer once again denied the accusations of domestic violence – echoing his first statement published in June.
“Out of respect for my fans, friends and family, I feel obliged to speak out publicly about the false accusations that I have been a victim of,” he wrote.
“From the beginning, I have treated this matter with seriousness and respect, providing the necessary clarifications to the police.
“The investigation is under judicial secrecy, and therefore I cannot make its contents public.
“However, I can calmly say that the accusations are false, and that the current evidence and the ones yet to be produced demonstrate my innocence.
He added that his relationship with Gabriela was “tumultuous” but claims it never resulted in violence.
“My relationship with Mrs. Gabriela was tumultuous, with verbal insults from both sides, but I never committed any physical aggression,” he explained.
“Each time, whether in testimony or in an interview, she presents a different version of the accusations.
“Therefore, I come to vehemently deny the accusations made and inform you that I remain at the entire disposal of the Brazilian authorities to clarify anything.
“I trust that ongoing police investigations will demonstrate the truth about my innocence.”
The online statement war comes after Gabriela shared a new string of text messages and pictures of her injuries as cops in Brazil carry on with the domestic violence probe.
Cavallin’s fresh claims were first published by Brazilian media outlet UOL, one of the South American country’s largest news providers.
In the new string of undated WhatsApp messages, the DJ and influencer claims Antony wished she was dead and told her “go f*** yourself” after she allegedly refused to reply to his messages and calls.

A total of four alleged attacks are described in a police report seen by respected sports news site ESPN.

Gabriela told cops they got back together soon after and she moved with him to Manchester after his transfer to the Red Devils.
A second alleged attack came at Gabriela’s flat in January.
The “jealous” star is alleged to have left her needing surgery to fix displaced silicone boob implants.
Two more alleged assaults followed in England – one witnessed by her friend and Antony’s mother.
Gabriela also said Antony threatened her after she returned to Brazil last month.
She has requested “urgent protective measures” against Antony, according to Brazilian media.
A spokesman for Manchester United said the club does not have any comment.
The Sun Online has also contacted Greater Manchester Police for comment on the allegations.
The couple’s romance was first made public last year.
In July, Gabriela shared on social media that she had suffered a miscarriage.
The baby boy would have have been named Luca Mateo.
Antony issued a lengthy denial and vowed to clear his name when the allegations were first made in June.
He wrote: “To friends, fans, and followers,
“For your sake, after giving my statement at the police station where the investigation involving my name is being conducted, I would like to speak publicly for the first time since I was falsely accused of assault.
“I remained silent until this moment so that nothing could interfere with the investigative process, but during all these days my family and I suffered in silence.
“Even though I was born and raised in a very underprivileged community, I had never been through a situation similar to this one, in which a false accusation of assault generated a prior and unfair public judgement by some people.
“After the investigation is closed, my innocence will be proven, it being certain that justice will prevail and the damage initially caused to my image will remain in the past.

Man Utd’s decision to drop Mason Greenwood is a relief but more must be done, women’s charities say

WOMEN’S charities have welcomed Manchester United’s decision to deny Mason Greenwood a comeback but say more must be done.Campaigners say abuse survivors will feel “relief” on hearing the ex-England striker won’t return to the Premier League club.

But they warned football clubs need to be better at dealing with similar cases and allegations about players’ behaviour.
Women’s Aid have been in talks with United after responding to a statement last Wednesday which suggested Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford was still being considered.
United today announced they had come to a “collaborative decision” with the 21-year-old forward that he would be moving on.
But the club did not say whether his £75,000-a-week contract would be terminated or whether he would be put on loan or sold.

The player released a statement admitting he had “made mistakes”.
Greenwood hasn’t played for the first team since being arrested in January last year on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.
All charges against him were dropped in February but the footballer remained suspended by United.
Members of Manchester United Women’s team reportedly raised concerns about Greenwood returning to the training ground.

And protests were staged at Old Trafford before United’s opening match of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Monday.
Channel 4’s Countdown co-host and Strictly Come Dancing star Rachel Riley also said last week she would stop supporting United if they allowed Greenwood back.
Women’s Aid spokeswoman Teresa Parker said: “We know that today’s news from Manchester United that Greenwood will be moving on from club will be a relief.
“Football is loved by so many people worldwide and players are often idolised by fans, so the way that these alleged abuse cases are treated in clubs has a huge impact on public understanding about what is accepted and tolerated in society.
“This is an issue that reaches far wider than football, with misogynistic content widely available on social media, so it is important to recognise how widespread harmful attitudes are and address this.”
    ‘FOOTBALL WORLD SHOULD WAKE UP’
She told how the charity “reached out” to United after last Wednesday’s statement and “since had conversations with the club”.
She added: “Our approach at Women’s Aid remains the same.
“We want to work collaboratively with football clubs and organisations to increase understanding and awareness of abuse, as part of our ongoing football campaign.”
A separate group called Female Fans Against Greenwood’s Return posted on X, formerly called Twitter, their support for the decision – but also criticism of the club for leaving it so long.
They said: “We are relieved that those with lived experiences of abuse, both fans and employees of MUFC, will finally be able to support their team and attend work without being forced to relive their trauma.
“Survivors, we see you, we are with you.
“We hope MUFC and the whole football world will wake up to their responsibilities after this shameful incident.
“Female fans aren’t passive customers. We are real people with real experiences, and we will make hell in defence of the clubs we love, and in defence of each other.”
And a joint statement by campaign groups The Three Hijabis and the End Violence Against Women Coalition called on the Football Association and the Premier League to act.
They demanded “mandatory sexual consent training to be provided for all players, managers, coaches and club owners”.
They said: “Individuals should be held to account for violence against women and girls and this is the right outcome for Manchester United.”
But they added: “We are clear that this issue is not solely about individual players but the industry that supports them, the clubs they play for, the leagues they compete in and the academies that train them.
“Football players and the teams they play for have a unique position in shaping the attitudes of boys and men.
“The need for football institutions to step up and take urgent, transparent responsibility for tackling gender-based violence has never been clearer.”
    GREENWOOD ADMITS MAKING ‘MISTAKES’
Greenwood’s last game was on January 22, 2022, in a Premier League clash against West Ham United, which United won 1-0.
He was charged in October last year and was due to stand trial in November this year.
But prosecutors withdrew the case on February 2 after his alleged victim and a dozen more witnesses refused to co-operate.
United said today they had taken into account the “wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible”.
The club added: “Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material alleged did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged
“That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.”
Greenwood also released a statement where he insisted he had not done what he was accused of but was “learning to understand my responsibilities as a professional footballer”.
He added: “I want to start by saying I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and I know people will think the worst.
“I was brought up to know that violence or abuse is wrong.
“I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February I was cleared of all charges.
“However, I fully accept I made mistakes.”
He added: “I intend to be a better footballer, but most importantly a good father, a better person, and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch.”

Bradford-born Greenwood has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United, having joined the club as a six-year-old.
He was given his England debut by manager Gareth Southgate as a late substitute against Iceland in September 2020, though has not played for the country since.

Jurors previously failed to reach a verdict over the allegations last August.
Giggs is said to be plotting a remarkable football comeback over “unfinished business” with the game.
A source said: “The last three years his life has been put on hold, but he’s a huge football man.
