Raphael Varane faces Erik Ten Hag probe over winter break photo as Man Utd defender may have breached major club rule

RAPHAEL VARANE is on a slippery slope with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag after photographing himself at a ski resort.

The French World Cup winner, 30, on Thursday posted an Instagram picture of himself enjoying his free time – given to all United players this week – at the unknown snow-covered destination.

It is understood United forbid players to go skiing during the season due to the risk of injury.

While the picture itself only shows the defender standing there, with slopes and skiers in the background, he is sure to be quizzed upon his return to Old Trafford.

Manager Ten Hag will be piste off if he learns the injury prone centre-back was reckless in taking part in any skiing.

The winter activity is banned by the majority of clubs across Europe, fearful of major injuries to stars.

Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer broke his leg in freak accident during the Bundesliga winter break in 2022, after returning from Germany’s disastrous World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Neuer was out for 10 months in total.

Last night a representative for Varane insisted he had not been skiing at the resort.

But it may only be downhill from here for four-time Champions League winner Varane, who moved to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in July, 2021 for £42million.

Rumours have already begun that Varane wants out of United, with interest from Saudi Pro League clubs and German champions Bayern Munich.

Varane has just this season left on his £340,000-a-week deal, although there is an option on the club’s side of a further year.

Varane has featured 18 times in all competitions for Man Utd this season.

The defender has been in and out of the team, with Varane falling behind Harry Maguire in the pecking order at one stage.

He has featured in five of the club’s last six games, only missing a game through illness.
