Liverpool suffer fresh Trent Alexander-Arnold blow as Jurgen Klopp reveals half-time sub was due to injury in same knee

However, Klopp calmed fears as he insists it is “nothing really bad” and Alexander-Arnold’s fitness will be assessed.

The full-back initially hurt his knee during last month’s FA Cup victory at Arsenal.

And the England international was taken off at half-time during the Reds’ 3-1 victory over Burnley at Anfield.

The German tactician insists that was just a precaution as the 25-year-old still felt “fine”.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “Same area in the knee. Nothing really bad but he felt it again and we have to see. We will assess it.

“We were made aware of it in the game so thought. ‘What can we do’ then Trent said, ‘No it’s fine’. But it’s not as he feels it so we had to be careful and take him off.”

Klopp praised Curtis Jones for the way he filled in for Alexander-Arnold at right-back, a position he never played at.

The departing Liverpool boss also sang Harvey Elliott’s praises after he replaced TAA in the second half.

Klopp told Match of the Day: “It was super difficult today.

“We lost so many players two weeks ago and now, then Trent Alexander-Arnold has to go off at half-time.

“We have to see what’s going on there. Curtis Jones had to go right-back and had never played there his entire life! He did so well.

Fans say Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘payback game is STRONG’ as he responds to James Maddison’s cheeky ‘replay’ post

“We scored these wonderful goals. Harvey Elliott came on and had a real impact. Top performances.

“We did really well it was just a difficult one.”

This comes amid an injury crisis at Liverpool that was exacerbated following a flu outbreak that cost Alisson and Joe Gomez a place in Klopp’s squad against Burnley.

Liverpool are almost down to bare bones with Mohamed Salah still missing after picking up a hamstring injury at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Dominik Szoboszlai was also absent along with Thiago Alcantara, who only returned from a lengthy injury lay-off against Arsenal on Sunday.
