Fans stunned by ‘easily the worst miss ever seen on a football field’ as even commentator mocks star after horror gaffe

FANS couldn’t believe their eyes after an Australian striker produced one of the worst misses of all time.

Sydney were already 3-0 up and cruising against the Central Coast Mariners when frontman Patrick Wood was presented with a golden chance to make it a rout.

It all came from a perfect bit of pressing from the attacker.

Mariners keeper Danny Vukovic took a poor first touch and Wood was in prime position to take advantage.

He ran onto the stopper’s loose pass before poking it past him to leave the himself an open net to shoot into.

He was just three yards out and supporters in the ground and at home were already celebrating.

But Wood somehow scuffed his shot wide of the post from point-blank range.

The 21-year looked embarrassed as he stood still with his head in his hands.

And his horror blunder was only made worse by the commentators, who rubbed salt into the wounds as they screamed: “Oh what a miss.

“Anything can and does happen because that – you will never see happen again.

“That is the most astonishing miss.

“Poor old Pat Wood, he must be wishing the ground would swallow him up.

Fans could also not believe the chance he squandered, with one saying: “Easily the worst miss I’ve ever seen on a football field.”

Another added: “I don’t often say I could do a better job than a professional player – but this time I could.”

A third commented: “This could be the most embarrassing miss ever.”

Wood’s day did not get much better as the goalless star was subbed off after 61 minutes for Robert Mak.

However, Sydney did seal all three points with a 3-1 win.
