Wayne Rooney tipped to fight Jamie Vardy by ex-world champ boxer who even offers to TRAIN HIM after Wagatha battle

AMIR KHAN has backed Wayne Rooney to fight Jamie Vardy and has even offered to TRAIN the Manchester United legend.

Rooney was linked with a switch to the ring after Misfits Boxing – home to celebrity-style crossover bouts – sent the ex-England captain a proposal.

And talk quickly turned to who the Three Lions icon would face in his boxing debut – with Vardy deemed a perfect opponent.

Their wives, Coleen and Rebekah, were centre of the infamous Wagatha battle that gripped the nation.

So even British boxing hero Khan would like to see the former international team-mates settle it in the ring.

He told Gambling Zone: “Jamie Vardy is the right fight for Wayne Rooney, that’s a very good even fight.

“They’ve got the spat their wives have had, what a fight that would make, it would sell well. They’re both around the same level as well.

“They’re both novices. I’d back Wayne though because Wayne’s more streetwise, he’s more solid.”

Rooney, 38, retired in 2021 and moved into management but he was sacked by Birmingham in January.

Meanwhile Vardy, 37, is still playing with Leicester in the Championship.

And if he was to ever fight Rooney, ex-world champion Khan would be in the opposite corner.

He said: “I’d love to train and help Wayne Rooney, sportsmen have a lot of respect for one another, because they’ve been there and done it, so they’d listen to you more than a normal trainer.

“When you train with another athlete it’s going to push you and you’re going to train hard.”

Rooney did finally break his silence amid the boxing rumours on an episode of The Overlap in February.

He said: “They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.

“There’s been a few [offers] and obviously Misfits have been in and that’s been all over the news.

“But listen I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.”
