Sergio Ramos in talks for sensational Spain return to face Scotland in crunch Euro 2024 qualifier next month

NEW Spain manager Luis de la Fuente will meet with veteran defender Sergio Ramos this week to see if their all-time most-capped player will make a sensational return against Scotland next month.

Scotland face the Spaniards in their second game in the Euro 2024 campaign at Hampden, after opening with a match against Cyprus.

PSG stopper Ramos is now 36 and hasn’t been included in a Spain squad for two years after he won his 180th cap.

But he has always insisted he remains available for selection and his international comeback looks set to be confirmed this week when he meets with the new Spain boss.

The former Real Madrid star has made 26 appearances for PSG this season and Ramos, who has won a World Cup, two European Championships and four Champions League titles – is set to resume his international career with a game in Glasgow, after Spain have played Norway.

The Hampden match will come two days before Ramos turns 37.

Ramos stated: “I will never leave Spain, it is Spain that left me.

“I have always said I aim to play until I am 40.”

Ramos holds multiple disciplinary records. He was sent off 20 times for Real Madrid – the most of any player in La Liga history.

He is also the Spanish league’s most-booked player of all time with 191 cards.

Including his time at PSG, he has been sent off 28 times, although only once this season in France.

Ramos has played at Hampden before though, in Spain’s 3-2 win in 2010.

Meanwhile, Scotland boss Steve Clarke wants to ditch the national team base at Edinburgh’s Oriam and make Glasgow’s Lesser Hampden the squad’s new long term training HQ.

SunSport understands the SFA have a vision of a ‘Hampden Hub’ comprising the £8-million developed Lesser stadium – currently being upgraded for Championship side Queen’s Park – and also the nearby Toryglen full-size indoor artificial pitch.
