Man Utd legend suddenly QUITS chief executive job and says ‘I am done’ as Old Trafford fans beg him to return


MANCHESTER UNITED legend Edwin van der Sar has left his position at Ajax.

The shock news has prompted calls from Man Utd fans to install him at Old Trafford.

The former goalkeeper, who won the Champions League in 2008 as well as four Premier League titles with United, quit as Ajax’s chief executive officer and will hand over his responsibilities from June 1.

However, he will formally remain in the position until August 1.

In a statement released by the club, the Dutchman said: “After almost eleven years on the board, I am done.

“We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.

“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together.

“I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.

“It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”

His resignation comes after he was booed by fans following an awful season for Ajax which saw them finish third in the Eredivisie and without a trophy.

The 52-year-old has been in charge of Ajax since November 2016 having been promoted from marketing director – a position he took in 2012.

Since joining Ajax, the club have won five league titles, two Dutch Cups and two Dutch Super Cups.

Van der Sar also won three titles in a row working with Erik ten Hag.

Following the news, Man Utd fans have begged the club icon to make his return.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “See you at Old Trafford soon VDS ❤️.”

A second typed: “He’s coming to United.”

A third commented: “Always wanted him as CEO of United.”

“Bring him back to OT,” declared a fourth fan, while another pleaded: “Please get him!!!”

On his decision to leave, Ajax Supervisory Board Chair Pier Eringa said: “We wanted Edwin to stay, but he had made his decision. We have to respect that.

“The last season does not reflect the entire period that he has been in charge of Ajax. The club has seen a lot of success, has seen a lot of growth, and gained international exposure.

“His tasks will be transferred to the remaining members of the board. Edwin will be available for the transfer and advise until August.

“We expect to announce a new Board of Directors after August 1. It’s our ambition to add someone to the board with an Ajax background.”
