GARY NEVILLE claims David Beckham is with Adidas because of him – but he has not received the recognition he deserves.

Beckham wore Adidas boots throughout his career and penned a deal worth £50,000 with the company in 1996.

He has worked with the German manufacturer on a number of campaigns since then and signed a long-term agreement with Adidas in 2003.

Speaking at the premiere of Netflix docuseries ‘Beckham’, Neville said: “Do you know something? You know David Beckham is with Adidas because of me.

“I gave him his first pair of predators in the USA in 1994 and that is a true story.

“My friends at Adidas, I don’t get the actual recognition I deserve for that.”

Neville and Beckham played with each other for several years after both progressing through United’s academy.

They became close friends with Neville acting as Beckham’s best man as he married Spice Girl Victoria in 1999.

The Netflix doc showed a clip of Neville’s speech, with one line leaving fans in hysterics.

Using the Red Devils’ Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich as his material, Neville also had the wedding goers in stitches.

Neville said: “We have got some distinguished guests present ladies and gentlemen.

“David said the Spice Girls requested that the Bayern Munich team be present today and David said he was puzzled at this request and asked why.

“The Spice Girls replied they wanted to meet any man who can be on top for 90 minutes and still come second.”
