Football team bus attacked by gunmen and ball boy shot in horror ordeal with players left injured


A BALLBOY has been taken to hospital after a football team were shot at on their way to a match.

Nigerian side Sunshine Stars were travelling to a Premier League clash with Insurance of Benin when their bus was attacked.

Several players and manager Seun Betiku have been left seriously injured and the ballboy was taken to hospital after being shot.

A statement from Sunshine Stars read: “It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that our team was attacked a few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an Elite League tie, against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.

“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack, Our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.

“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety corp that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital. We hope you join us in prayers.”

The bus windows were shattered by the bullets and fans responded to the shocking news by wishing the ballboy a speedy recovery.

One wrote: “Prayers for speedy recovery to all the injured ones.”

Another added: “Our heart is with you, speedy recovery to all in Jesus name even as we pray and hope for a better nation.”

A third said: “Wishing the guys a quick recovery.”
