England record scorer Harry Kane once played as GOALKEEPER – and it ended just as badly as you’d expect

HARRY KANE is a goal machine and on Thursday became England’s record goalscorer.

But many years ago he fulfilled a completely different role for his beloved Tottenham.

In a 2014 Europa League match against Greek side Asteras Tripolis, Hugo Lloris was sent off and Spurs had used up all their subs.

In typical Kane fashion he stepped up to the plate, aged just 21, to take the Frenchman’s place in goal.

But having scored a hat-trick to help his side into a 5-0 lead, Kane could not repeat his heroics at the other end of the pitch.

He spilled a tame free-kick late on from Jeronimo Barrles minutes after donning the gloves.

The game ended 5-1 to Tottenham and Kane walked off the pitch wearing the keeper’s jersey but clutching the matchball.

He has continued to score goals ever since for both club and country.

This season alone he has become the record scorer for both England and Spurs, overtaking Jimmy Greaves’ previous record of 266 in February.

Kane now has 54 goals in just 81 games for the Three Lions and he spoke about how proud he was to achieve the milestone.

After Gareth Southgate and his team-mates paid tribute, Kane said: “I just want to say thanks to you guys, the staff, the players.

“It means a lot to me to play for England first and foremost, but to score this goal especially after what happened at the World Cup means a lot. So a big thanks to everyone and let’s keep it going.”

He later added: “Madness, madness. Not even a dream, I didn’t even dream of doing something like this so just hugely proud.

“Big thanks to the team, the staff, the fans, everyone involved. My family back home.

“It’s a special moment and one I’ll never forget, and to win the game, first win in Italy for God knows how long… Just a real special night for me and the team.”
