ALESSIA RUSSO’s rise to superstardom was predicted by an England legend – a whopping 11 years ago.

The former Manchester United star played a pivotal role in England‘s Euro 2022 triumph, scoring four goals in the tournament.

Her recent success was a surprise to many unfamiliar with the women’s game.

But not to former Arsenal and England star Kelly Smith – who 11 years ago touted Russo to be the next big thing.

A tweet of Smith tipping the then 13-year-old for greatness started doing the rounds again following Russo’s move to Arsenal.

Along with a picture of her embracing the teenager, Smith wrote: “Watch out for @alessiarusso7she’s gonna be a top player for England one day.”

Scores of fans responded to the tweet after Russo helped guide The Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory.

One tweeted: “Top talent ID from Kelly Smith.”

Russo completed a free transfer to Arsenal earlier this week following the expiration of her contract with United.

She spent three years with The Red Devils but opted to move on to pastures new, snubbing multiple contract extension offers in the process.

Upon her Emirates arrival, she said: “I want to win trophies – as does everyone in this club.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in and grow as a player. It’s a new challenge and a new environment.

“I think the growth of the women’s game has been incredible, but particularly at a club like Arsenal.
