In response fans turned on the flashlight on their phones and began waving them in the air.

Referee Peter Bankes also fell victim to the electronic failure as his mic stopped working.

And the scoreboard failed during the few minutes of blackout.

Fortunately, the matter was resolved fairly quickly and play was able to resume.

Fans watching at home quickly made light of the situation and joked at Brighton’s expense.

One wrote: “Brighton need to put 50p in the meter.”

Another added: “Brighton had some IT issues so they switched it off and back on again.”

A third said tongue-in-cheek: “The scriptwriters needed a five-minute break to decide how to rob Brighton of top four.”

Another commented: “Brighton didn’t pay the electricity bill ❌”

Brighton did not alert fans to the incident on social media but Palace did, writing: “The players have been removed from the pitch by the referee due to a power cut.”

Brighton held on to their 1-0 advantage to maintain their push for a European place.
