‘The coach’s system didn’t suit me’ – Timo Werner blames Thomas Tuchel for Chelsea struggles before RB Leipzig transfer

TIMO WERNER says Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s system, combined with his lack of regular football, are the reasons why he left Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old returned to RB Leipzig in a deal worth £23.5million earlier this month.

And Werner has claimed Tuchel’s tactics “didn’t suit” him particularly well.

The German international was signed by Frank Lampard in 2020, but largely found himself shunted out on to the wing under Tuchel.

Werner also found himself regularly dropped to the bench, and admitted “the fun got a bit lost”

He told the Einfach Luppen podcast: “For me, the fun of playing football is in the foreground.

“Of course, I had great success at Chelsea, but the fun got a bit lost in the end because I didn’t play regularly anymore.

“I think the coach’s system of play didn’t suit me perfectly.

“That’s why it was clear to me that I wanted to take a new step. I’m at an age where I want to play as much as I can.”

Werner enjoyed a goalscoring return to Leipzig, finding the back of the net on his second debut for the club.

For Chelsea he scored just 23 goals in 89 appearances – but Werner still considers his time at Stamford Bridge as a success.

He won the Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup during his time in a Chelsea shirt.

Werner continued: “I really associate very great successes with Chelsea – the greatest of my career.

“It will always be a special club for me. I will also stay in touch with many of the players from the team.”

And Werner meant it when he said the Blues will always be “special” to him.

The forward was spotted in the crowd during the 2-2 draw against Tottenham last weekend.
