Man Utd warned they are not only club in for Cody Gakpo as Ruud van Nistelrooy says ‘top teams’ want transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED’S hopes of signing Cody Gakpo have been dented as PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy insists there is a lot of interest in him.

The 23-year-old Dutch international was the subject of interest from the Red Devils in the summer transfer window.

The Old Trafford club considered a move for Gakpo as a deal for Ajax’s Antony was proving difficult to sort, although they did get it over the line in the end.

Despite staying at PSV, Gakpo has continued to excel and has netted 14 goals in 20 games this season for club and country.

Should United want to go back in for the attacker, it will prove to be harder as confirmed by his boss and former Red Devils striker Van Nistelrooy.

He said: “I think there is not only Premier League clubs after him.

“Of course, with the quality he is showing and the form he is having over the last three-four months is exceptional.

“His stats, his assists and goals that he is involved in, of course, draws the attention of the best clubs in European football.

“The good thing about him is that he is aged 23-years-old and is purely focused on his development and becoming a better player, doing well and captaining PSV the best he can.

“He is also focusing on a great World Cup as he is playing in the national team with [Louis] Van Gaal.

“For him he is in a fantastic moment and he wants to continue that and when the time comes he will make decisions when necessary.”

The player admitted that he was “close” to joining United in the summer after confirming talks with manager Erik ten Hag.

He told The Times that it was a “shame” that the deal did not go through because United are “one of the biggest clubs in the world”.

United will likely be back in the market for a forward in January and next summer with continued question marks over the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.
