‘Beyond crazy’ – Watch Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy’s horror blunder to gift Leeds goal at Elland Road

CHELSEA goalkeeper Edouard Mendy endured a moment to forget when he gifted Leeds a bizarre opener at Elland Road.

The 30-year-old has been a solid presence since joining the Blues from Rennes in 2020, but he won’t want to see this one again.

Mendy received a backpass with plenty of time in the 33rd minute, only to dawdle as he was closed down by Brenden Aaronson.

The stopper tried to beat the American but got it horribly wrong.

Aaronson, 21, easily tackled Mendy before firing the ball into the empty net from a yard out.

The commentators labelled the gaffe as “beyond crazy” as it gifted Leeds a 1-0 lead.

And fans were also unforgiving.

One wrote: “He does this way too much to the point he has become predictable. Glad he got humbled tbh.”

A second commented: “Mendy has been suspect for a while, hopefully he cleans up.”

While another joked: “The best goalkeeper in the league they said.”

Leeds then compounded Chelsea’s misery by scoring again moments later.

In-form forward Rodrigo headed home Jack Harrison’s free-kick to double his side’s lead in the 37th minute.

The brilliant effort was the Spaniard’s fourth goal in just three games this season and left the Chelsea stopper helpless.

Mendy’s gaffe wasn’t his first in 2022.

A horrible mix-up with Antonio Rudiger saw the Senegalese ace labelled “the new Karius” as his underhit pass allowed Karim Benzema to score a crucial Champions League goal for Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge in April.
