But Howe, 44, wanted a wide forward and is keen to re-enter the market in January.

According to The Athletic, the Toon’s recruitment team have a number of targets in mind.

Newcastle would love to sign one-cap England international James Maddison from Leicester, but are likely to be met by resistance from Brendan Rodgers’ strugglers.

Come January Maddison will have just 18 months left on his Foxes deal – but Leicester possess the option to extend it by a further year.

Howe is a big fan of Leeds ace Jack Harrison, but the Whites are desperate not to lose their star winger.

The Magpies chose to prioritise their swoop for Isak over Watford’s Joao Pedro in the summer.

But that does not mean their interest in the Brazilian forward is necessarily over and they could return for his services mid-season.

Mykhaylo Mudryk has drawn admiring glances with his form for Shakhtar Donetsk – scoring against RB Leipzig and Celtic in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old is on Newcastle’s list of targets – as well as “dream signing” Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.

Newcastle have endured a mixed start to the season.

Howe’s men beat Nottingham Forest on the opening day, but haven’t won since.

The Toon have drawn five matches and lost only one since – a late defeat at Liverpool.
