Tottenham vs Chelsea LIVE REACTION: Blues pile on Mourinho misery as Jorginho penalty secures win – latest updates

JORGINHO’s penalty was the difference as Chelsea beat Tottenham 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Jose Mourinho’s Spurs have now lost their last three Premier League matches as the pressure mounts on the former Blues boss.

  • GOODBYE

The last time Tottenham failed to score against Chelsea, they moved to the top of the table and all was well.

Just over two months on, Spurs have again drawn a blank against the Blues, but now their season is in danger of falling apart.

A 1-0 loss was a third successive defeat for the North London club, who now find themselves in eighth spot and looking at those below them in the Premier League rather than above.

Jose Mourinho is a man under fire, both for his defensive brand of football and the poor run of form that has seen his side muster just two league wins in ten.

In stark contrast, the era of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea has begun brightly.

The German boss has taken seven points from his three games in charge, has yet to see side concede a goal, and has the Stamford Bridge club dominating possession like never before.

Tonight’s derby was settled by a first half penalty from Jorginho, but, in truth, there was a whole chasm between the sides when it came to desire, direction and confidence.

Mourinho had never lost consecutive home games as a manager before this evening, but this is a season where such records are falling by the wayside.

He has the perfect opportunity to get his team back on track when hosting West Brom on Sunday. Fail to win that, however, and it could well spell the end for Jose. It really is all or nothing.

    Thanks for reading, and goodnight.

  • MOURINHO REACTION

Despite the disappointing performance, Jose Mourinho has put a positive spin on this evening’s encounter. Speaking to Des Kelly afterwards, the Tottenham boss suggested that despite Chelsea’s dominance with the ball, the penalty was all that separated the sides.

It was a bit of a struggle but how many chances did they have? The penalty? We didn’t have the ball, correct. We didn’t create in the first half, correct. The struggle was the penalty and it difficult to accept because it was not a dangerous situation.

In the second half, we were different, the spirit was different, the confidence too.

Lucas and Lamela helped to change the dynamic, and to finish the game with this positive spirit helps.

  • BALE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD

Despite the injury to Harry Kane and a lack of attacking options, there was still no place for Gareth Bale in the Tottenham team this evening.

Following a poor 70 minutes in which Spurs hardly mustered a shot, Jose Mourinho overlooked the Welshman as he looked for replacements, instead opting for Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela.

In his post-match press conference, the Tottenham manager gave this curious response to a question on Bale’s position.

I’m doing my best. He’s doing his best. Everybody is doing their best.

  • TIMO’S TWEET

A happy Timo Werner has taken to Twitter to express his derby delight. If only he was as prolific in front of goal as he is on social media.

  • THE TABLE

Chelsea are up to sixth after tonight’s victory while Spurs remain in eighth. Jose Mourinho’s men had moved to the top of the Premier league after the 0-0 draw with Chelsea in November.

Manchester City lead the way, and face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

  • TUCHEL REACTION

A delighted Thomas Tuchel has been speaking post-match, praising his players for the manner in which they dominated the first half, and then how they dug deep to thwart Tottenham in the second.

Every experience we make is a step forward if we are open to learning from it. The whole first half we totally controlled the game high up the pitch, and then in the second half we lost a bit of confidence.

Minute by minute, we lost a little bit of ball possession, but we never lost belief, we never lost our structure and intensity to defend.

In football, there are many ways to have a good performance. If it’s necessary to suffer, you have to be ready to suffer, and that’s what I’m very happy about.

    Thomas Tuchel

  • SHOT SHY SPURS

The stats will show that Tottenham managed seven shots this evening compared to Chelsea’s 18, but four of those came in a desperate final five minutes.

  • MOUNTING A CLAIM

Man of the Match Mason Mount has spoken at full time about Chelsea’s new style under Thomas Tuchel, and how the players have taken to their roles.

I think we had a lot of control in the first half and should have scored more in the game. We should be more clinical in front of goal and that’s something we need to work on. It’s the style the manager wants and it’s something we need to keep working at. It’s new. It’s different for some of us players. We’re all learning, but it’s going well so far.

  • JOSE FINALLY IN NEED OF HOME HELP

It’s a third defeat in succession for Jose Mourinho, and that now includes consecutive home losses for the first time.

  • FULL TIME STATS

Tottenham have been beaten, bettered and beleaguered.

    What now for Jose Mourinho?

  • SHOUT OUT FOR TOMMY’S SHUT OUTS

Chelsea have yet to concede a goal since Thomas Tuchel took charge at Stamford Bridge, following in the footsteps of an old great.

  • FT: TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

Chelsea win at the home of their London rivals. The scoreline suggests a narrow victory, but Thomas Tuchel’s Blues were vastly superior to a disappointing Spurs outfit. Jorginho’s first half penalty was the difference as Jose Mourinho suffered consecutive home defeats for the first time in his managerial career.

  • PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
IT’S ALL OVER IN NORTH LONDON!

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    90+3. Son! Over!

Spurs try to work one final chance, and when Moura fails to get the better of Christensen, the ball falls nicely to Son just inside the area.

The South Korean takes on the shot first time, but snatches at what is a rare chance and fires over.

That should ensure Chelsea leave with all three points.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    90. As the the board goes up to signal three minutes of stoppage time, Werner catches a shot sweetly.

Typical of the German’s luck of late, it crashes into an opponent rather than the back of the net.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    89. Another effort on goal from Spurs, this time from a set-piece.

Dier takes charge of a free-kick 25-yards from goal, but pulls his curler wide of the far post with Mendy caught flat-footed.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    88. Vinicius! That should have been the equaliser!

The striker has been starved of service all game, but finally gets his chance with a header from an excellent Aurier cross.

The Brazilian gets up to meet the delivery, only to send it agonisingly wide of the far post.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    86. The camera cuts to Gareth Bale on the bench.

It’s an image that sums up the frustration felt by all during this loan move.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    85. As the clock shows just five minutes of normal time remaining, the stats come out.

Jose Mourinho has not lost three successive games since his second spell as Chelsea manager. Tottenham have never lost consecutive home games in their new stadium. Jose Mourinho has never lost back-to-back home matches in his career as a manger.

    All are about to change.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    83. James and Mount stand over a free-kick inside the Tottenham half. Eventually, it’s the midfielder who swings it towards Rudiger in the box, only for Hojbjerg to clear to safety,

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    81. Kante is yellow carded for lunge on Lamela.

He becomes the second Chelsea substitute to be cautioned after Pulisic has been booked minutes earlier for an offence missed by the television cameras.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    79. A shot! A shot! Tottenham have had a shot!

Lamela works the ball on to his left foot, and lets fly 25 yards from goal with a curler.

Undeterred by the lack of action, Mendy gets down well to his right to parry away.

It’s Spurs’ first effort on goal since Aurier headed wide in the 43rd minute.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    76. Good save from Lloris!

The Tottenham captain keeps his side in the game with a low one-handed stop to deny Mount.

  • TOTTENHAM 0-1 CHELSEA

    75. A melee inside the Tottenham area ends with two players – James and Dier – receiving a ball in the face, and at least another two offside.
