Ross Barkley returns to Chelsea training and looks to impress Thomas Tuchel ahead of new season after Aston Villa loan

ROSS BARKLEY was the latest loanee to return to Chelsea training today as he looks to impress Thomas Tuchel ahead of the new Premier League season.

Barkley, 27, spent the last campaign with Aston Villa where he scored three goals in 24 games.

But he was back in action at Cobham on Tuesday as the Blues look to challenge Manchester City for their title.

And Barkley will be hoping to add to his 86 Chelsea appearances by convincing Tuchel of his worth to the first-team squad.

Belgian midfielder Charly Musonda also trained on Tuesday, having spent around 18 months out injured.

The 24-year-old has suffered several cruciate ligament injuries since joining Chelsea in 2012.

And Musonda was told two years ago that he only had a 20 per cent chance of playing football again.

However, he has defied doctors by making a remarkable comeback and could be given a new lease of life by Tuchel.

Other ex-loan players involved at training included Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Danny Drinkwater, Davide Zappacosta and Conor Gallagher.

Tuchel also ran his eye over Malang Sarr, Marc Guehi, Trevor Chalobah and Armando Broja, who spent last season away from Chelsea too.

But it remains to be seen how many are kept at the club, with the Blues already boasting a packed squad.

Indeed, Chelsea hope to add to it with the signings of a new striker and midfielder.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is a £150million target, while West Ham’s Declan Rice is being lined up for an emotional return to his boyhood team.
