Lineker moans about Patrick Vieira ‘getting one over on Tottenham’ as Arsenal hero inflicts Spurs’ first loss of season

FORMER Tottenham striker Gary Lineker posted an exasperated tweet after Arsenal hero Patrick Vieira inflicted Spurs’ first defeat of the season.

The Gunners legend sealed his first win as Crystal Palace boss with a 3-0 victory at Selhurst Park and the Match of the Day host did not seem too pleased.

Spurs’ Japhet Tanganga was sent off for a second yellow card on the hour mark which was the turning point.

Wilfried Zaha made it 1-0 from the spot on 76 minutes after Ben Davies was judged to have handled the ball in the box.

And new signing Odsonne Edouard came off the bench for a perfect debut and scored twice inside the last ten minutes to seal the win.

Tottenham – who were top of the table before kick-off – were poor.

And Lineker was quick to point to Vieira’s Arsenal connection when commenting on the result after the game.

The 60-year-old wrote: “Patrick Vieira getting one over on Spurs. Been a while since that happened.”

Arsenal fans near the Emirates were heard singing Vieira songs after the result – ahead of the Gunners’ 3pm kick-off against Norwich.

And Palace fans taunted their Spurs counterparts with: “Patrick Vieira, he’s won more than you!”

The former midfielder has now beaten Spurs as a player and manager in the 1990s, the 2000s, the 2010s and the 2020s.

But Vieira was keen to focus on the achievements of his Palace players after the game rather than any rivalry with Tottenham.

He told BT Sport: “It was really important. We needed to win.

“The players have been working well and hard since I’ve been here and today everything was perfect.”
