Kieran Trippier’s 10-game ban for betting violation put on hold by Fifa, claim Atletico Madrid

KIERAN TRIPPIER’S 10-week suspension for a betting violation has been put on hold by Fifa, Atletico Mardid claimed on Saturday.

The FA last week found the England right-back guilty of four of seven alleged betting offences relating to his move from Tottenham to Spain in 2019.

Tripper, 30, was also fined £70,000 and Fifa confirmed that the ban was effective worldwide, coming into affect immediately.

Trippier appealed the decision claiming he did not place any bets or profit from bets placed by others.

And it now appears Fifa have put the ban on hold pending further information.

Atletico say they received notification on Saturday morning that Trippier was available for selection while the appeal is pending.

He has already missed the 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday and will not be available to face Alaves on Sunday after having already been left out of Diego Simeone’s squad.

Atletico – were left fuming with the prospect that Trippier was likely to miss the Champions League round of 16 ties with Chelsea – are also lodging their own appeal.

The club’s CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, said: “Personally, I think it’s a suspension that is disproportionate for the player and totally unjust for Atlético.

Atletico Madrid are preparing to launch an appeal of their own

“How can it be possible that the party that is most negatively effected by this is Atletico, which hasn’t played any part in the process?

“If the player has committed an infraction that does not have any effect on the competition, how can it be Atlético is the one punished by this?

“The fact that the FA has punished the player by preventing him from playing against Chelsea, and that the ban just happens to finish just as the England national team is scheduled to play a competitive game, makes you think all sorts of things about the integrity of the competition and the ethics of a football association with a long history.”
