But the squad looked in buoyant mood as they were put through their paces ahead of their World Cup qualifying triple-header against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.

Among the beaming faces was Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, who was called up to the England group for the first time in his career by Gareth Southgate.

Bamford was seen on a spin bike alongside club – and now international – team-mate Kalvin Phillips, one of the Three Lions’ standout performers of the summer.

Elsewhere, Liverpool whiz Trent Alexander-Arnold grinned during the session having missed out on a spot in the Euro 2020 squad through a devastating injury.

Jesse Lingard was another returning star having failed to make the final squad for the summer tournament.

And the Manchester United midfielder looked to be loving every moment of being back as he shared a joke with Kyle Walker during Tuesday’s session.

Elsewhere, stalwarts including Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson were seen taking part in drills.

But Mason Greenwood, Ben White, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford, Ollie Watkins and Ben Chilwell all missed out on a spot in the squad.

On his selections, Southgate explained: “This is a fresh cycle.

“We were always going to pick the bulk of the squad from the summer. We were never looking to make a lot of changes.

“Ben White has had a Covid situation, Ben Chilwell has not played a game since the Champions League final and others have not had much football.

“Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford are injured. We were pleased with what Ollie Watkins did and now an opportunity for Patrick as a No9.

“His progress with Leeds has been excellent. This is a good chance for him.”

Southgate continued: “[Greenwood] is in our thoughts. I have spoken with him and his club. He is a player we really like.

“We are all conscious we make the progression at the right time and he is just breaking into the United team which is a big thing to deal with and we want the progression right with our seniors.

“We are all aligned with that. We feel at the moment the best thing for him is that he stays with his club.”
