Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes ‘tells Man Utd board to hire Julen Lopetegui as Solskjaer replacement’

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S agent Jorge Mendes has touted Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui as the man to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager.

Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday morning following the Red Devils’ humiliating 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.

The result leaves Man Utd seventh in the Premier League table with just one win from their last seven matches in the top flight.

Michael Carrick will take charge of their upcoming games against the likes of Villarreal and Chelsea while the board search for a coach who can take them through until the end of the season.

A number of managers have been linked as the possible successor to Solskjaer.

And, according to The Athletic, Mendes, the super-agent renowned for representing United superstar Ronaldo, believes Lopetegui can be the man to fill the vacancy.

Lopetegui has coached a number of high-profile clubs including Porto, Real Madrid and now Sevilla.

He was also in charge of the Spain national team for two years but was dismissed on the eve of the 2018 World Cup after agreeing to join Real Madrid.

Lopetegui knocked Solskjaer’s Man Utd side out of the 2019-20 Europa League as Sevilla went on to lift the trophy.

But the Spaniard is not the only manager in the hat to take over the reigns at Old Trafford.

SunSport revealed on Sunday night that Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has been contacted by Man Utd.

The Red Devils are prepared to pay £8million in compensation to his current club, Leicester.

Ex-Liverpool boss Rodgers has a clause in his contract letting him speak to certain clubs if they come knocking — and United are one.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino is another candidate for the job.

The former Tottenham manager Pochettino is reportedly prepared to answer the call if United come ringing.

That is because they claim he is currently living in a hotel in the French capital, while his family still live in England following his six years here.

Other names in the hat include Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, and ex-France coach Laurent Blanc.
