Juventus star Ronaldo has been linked with a move away from Italy and his Portugal team-mate Jose Fonte tried to persuade him to move to France by joining him at Lille.

Fonte told talkSPORT: “I feel great. I feel great because it’s incredible to hear a player like Lionel Messi is in French football in our league.

“It’s exciting. Obviously in terms of competitors it’s going to be even harder for us but we’re up for a challenge – I’m texting Cristiano to come to Lille every day! He’s only replied ‘ha ha ha.'”

Ronaldo and Messi enjoyed a huge rivalry during their time as opponents at Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The two superstars have vied for the status as the world’s greatest player throughout their careers.

Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Real Madrid this summer after Juve missed out on the title last season.

The 36-year-old forward is only contracted at Juve for one more season and there are no talks planned over a new deal.

But the chance of Ronaldo renewing his rivalry with Messi in France looks a non starter with none of the clubs having the financial muscle to afford him.

Ronaldo is likely to have a more central attacking role this season under returning boss Massimiliano Allegri.

Juve brought Allegri back to the club after the disappointment of failing to defend the Serie A title under Andrea Pirlo.
