Trezeguet was clearly distraught as he went down, clutching his face in pain.

Villa medics rushed on to the field to provide treatment in the hope he could see out the game.

But Trezeguet who could be seen being consoled by fellow Egyptian Mo Salah – was unable to continue against the Reds and had to be helped off the field.

As he headed towards the tunnel, the attacker broke down in tears as Jurgen Klopp watched on sympathetically.

Trezeguet missed nine matches between December and January after suffering a head injury against West Ham.

In that time period, the ace also tweaked his hamstring in a further blow.

Trezeguet could now be set for another spell on the sidelines, having rescued Villa with two late goals in last week’s 3-1 comeback win against Fulham.

Trezeguet’s injury misery at Anfield was compounded moments later when Alexander-Arnold, whose tackle downed him, scored an incredible winner for Liverpool.

It means the Reds remain on course to challenge for a Champions League finish, while their dismal run of six successive home defeats has finally ended.

Meanwhile, Villa remain 10th in the table after being overtaken by Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa’s ten men held on to secure a famous 2-1 victory at the home of champions-elect Manchester City.
