The Milton Keynes-born USA international, 22, had his hospital date delayed twice and may have a lengthy wait for clearance.

Both he and Wigan had hoped for a rehab period of around six to eight weeks and were optimistic he could play again if this season is extended.

But now all plans are in limbo and Robinson, who has not played since late January, will not feature again until the op is carried out and he has made a full recovery.

Milan are still keen but need him back to full fitness first.

Robinson has a three-year contract worth around £2.5million on the table with the Serie A side.

Their legendary football chief Paolo Maldini has stayed in touch since the medical snag appeared.

The fee and terms may have to be adjusted but Robinson hopes to come back as good as new to complete the transfer.

Up until his last game on January 28, Robinson had featured in 30 games in all competitions for the Latics – chipping in with one goal and five assists.
