Watch Thomas Muller liken Bayern’s victory at Stuttgart to win on ‘windy night in Stoke’ in bizarre post-match interview

IS this football’s ultimate insult or compliment?

Germany legend Thomas Muller pulled out English football’s most niche cliche as he likened Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win at Stuttgart to triumphing “on a windy night in Stoke”.

Champions Bayern came from behind through Kingsley Conan, Robert Lewandowski and Douglas Costa to move two points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga.

And although 100-cap midfielder Muller, 31, drew a blank on the field he was clinical off it with his scorching Pott shot.

The 2014 World Cup winner gave 110% in a post-match interview as he told BT Sport: “How do the British people say it? You have to show it on a windy night in Stoke – something like that.

“It was not windy and Stuttgart is not Stoke, but Stuttgart is a team that has played very well during the last few weeks.

“It was tough, it was not our best performance. It was tough. It was not our easiest style of football, but in the end, three points in the pocket and the show must go on!”

Muller’s wunderbar summary won him huge plaudits on social media, with admiration and amusement the main responses.

Typical posts included: “What a player. What a guy” and “How can you not like this man”.

So, while it’s the best of times for Champions League kings Bayern, it’s also not the wurst of times for Muller’s English!
