RB Leipzig drop Timo Werner to Liverpool transfer hint as they tell Reds fans ‘let’s support him together’

JURGEN KLOPP’S hopes of landing Timo Werner received a surprise boost as RB Leipzig tweeted: “Liverpool fans, You love Timo Werner. So do we. Let’s support him together!”

But Manchester United and Chelsea target Werner failed to score in Leipzig’s 1-1 draw with Freiburg as the Bundesliga returned after the coronavirus pandemic.

But RB excited Anfield supporters on social media with their post asking them to back the Germany striker, 24.

They even rammed home the message by adding the hashtag YoullNeverWalkHimHome, albeit an offbeat offshoot of Liverpool’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” chant.

All this strengthens the Reds’ position as favourites to sign the 29-cap star, who is thought to have a £52million release clause.

IRKED BAYERN

Already this weekend it has been suggested Werner was prepared to stay at Leipzig another season as they would then allow him to join the Reds for a smaller fee.

And earlier this month he has irked Bundesliga leaders Munich by saying: “A challenge in a foreign league would appeal to me rather than a move to Bayern.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wants elite-level competition for his outstanding front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

But he is also aware Salah and especially Mane have been linked with big-money switches to Spain – so a new forward is a priority.

And ex-Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick believes Anfield would be a much better fit for Werner than Bayern.

He told Bild: “The league is less important, but the club, from a purely hypothetical point of view, I would better see him in good hands with a club that is not necessarily defined by ball possession football.

“Since Timo has made progress under Julian Nagelsmann, his most important weapons, however, are the quick switching movement and his powerful finish.

“Therefore, he would rather fit a club like Liverpool, which is similar to our style of play, but I would prefer him to stay here.”

Reaction from Reds’ fans on Twitter to Leipzig’s post was a mixture of intrigue  – “So is he joining us?”, defiance – “I’m not supporting Leipzig”, and humour  – “Agent Mane on the case”.

But the German club’s tweet not only heightens interest in the first European league to resume after the virus, it also keeps Werner at the top of the list for summer transfer speculation.
