City chose to give the new champions a guard of honour as a show of respect – before inflicting a big defeat on the Reds in their first game after being crowned.

After the final whistle Guardiola told Sky Sports: “I think they drunk a lot of beer the last week, but they were here with no beer in their blood and to win this game, thats why I give a lot of credit to what we have done.

“I saw a team with incredible focus, with energy and a desire to win the game, and I saw from the first minute they were focused to play hard.

“The guard of honour. How they work and how focused they are, not evening saying thank you, just focused to the game. That’s why they’re champions of Europe and the Premier League.”

Guardiola said he chose to give his side’s bitter rivals a guard of honour “because they deserved it”.

The City boss hopes his side’s win over the Reds can ignite the fire their bellies to add to their trophy collection.

He continued: “Maybe that will help us. We still have a hard season with trophies to aim for, and we had to be brave to take risks, because they are the best team at high pressing I have every seen in my life.

“We had to be really connected to punish them, and that is what we did.”

Klopp wasn’t in such good spirits after his side’s trip to the Etihad and was in fiery form in his post-match interview.

A number of times the Reds coach insisted he did not understand the question, before launching into a rebuttal against the reporter when asked about his side missing early chances.

Having won the title over a week ago, the Liverpool chief insisted pre-game that his side only celebrated for the one night but were well beaten by the former champions.

The Anfield boss and his star-studded squad were together at a secret hotel when the Reds were confirmed as champions for the first time in 30 years, and it was party time once the final whistle blew when City lost 2-1 at Chelsea.

The new kings of the Premier League popped open the corks to crown their glory and were pictured dancing the night away.
