Liverpool readying transfer swoop for Olympiakos’ Ruben Semedo, 26, to cover for injured Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez

LIVERPOOL are being linked with a surprise £8million bid for Olympiakos’ Ruben Semedo to tackle their defensive crisis.

Portugal centre-back Semedo has reportedly joined Schalke’s Ozan Kabak and Brighton’s Ben White on a list of potential replacements for long-term crocks Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

And  Portuguese TV network Sic Noticias even claim the Reds are prepared to offer Semedo a five-year deal.

Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp seems certain to splash out in January.

Versatile Brazilian Fabinho is again likely to slot into the middle of defence after the international break.

How Liverpool have fared with and without Van Dijk since his debut in 2018 up to his injury against Everton

But even he needs to shake off a hamstring injury.

That means the form and fitness of Joel Matip is under an intense microscope especially after having injury worries of his own.

Fringe defenders Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams could yet be pressed into far more regular action this term than surely they or Klopp expected.

Meanwhile, Gomez could be out for months after needing surgery on a tendon problem suffered in England training last week.

That followed main man Van Dijk being ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL knee injury.

Twice-capped Semedo, 26, was with Sporting Lisbon and Villarreal before joining Greek giants Olympiakos in June 2019.
