Jack Rodwell signs new Sheffield United deal after making two appearances since joining in January

SHEFFIELD UNITED have handed Jack Rodwell a new one-year contract – despite the midfielder playing just twice for them since joining.

The 29-year-old signed a deal until the end of the season in January, with the England international failing to prove his worth at Bramall Lane.

Rodwell made his only Premier League appearance of the campaign in the 1-1 draw away at Burnley last month.

Fans were left stunned by his substitute outing, as supporters joked 2020 continues to throw up surprises.

But even though Rodwell has failed to be given chances in the first team, the Blades have rewarded him with a new contract.

The ex-Manchester City man showed off his versatility in January when he impressed as a centre-back in the FA Cup win against AFC Fylde.

And with Chris Wilder understood to want to sign a centre-back, the fact Rodwell can play in two positions has earned him a new deal.

As well as Rodwell, Phil Jagielka has also committed his future to the club for another year.

Jagielka – who played with Rodwell at Everton – appeared in ten games during the 2019/20 season.

The 38-year-old featured in 287 matches for the Blades before he joined the Toffees in 2007.

Commenting on the announcements, boss Wilder said: “Phil is a valuable and respected member of the squad and I’m delighted to keep him in the building for next season.

“The same applies with Jack, who offered us versatility and gave us options within the group during the second-half of last term.”
